AIBU to be concerned that a life on benefits seems to be a viable option, and glad Labour are bringing in compulsory work placements?

A young man looks at his phone while sitting at a computer in his home. He looks weary.

Young people out of work, training and education edges closer to one million

People at the start of their careers are particularly affected by the UK's weak job market.

I'm sure that's affecting the stats.

The UK's unemployment rate is higher than Italy's! That's a damning indictment of Rachel Reeves' management of the economy.

It’s probably more of a reflection on the extent to which AI is affecting the job market, both in the recruitment process and in taking over entry level jobs. Self checkouts have killed loads of retail jobs too.

It's interesting about how much the job market has changed. I've been a carer for a disabled DC for over a decade and before that was self employed (cleaner and independent home care service), I'm still self employed but home based now so I can be on call for my DC at all times. So it's a long time since I've had to engage with this sort of thing!

My older DC who is early 20s has always had a job since leaving home, but never with a big company. She's always worked for independent places or very small chains so had none of this AI or task related bollocks to contend with on application! Her first job at uni trained her up as a barista and she has never struggled to find work since - properly trained baristas seem to be in fairly high demand in cities. I guess AI can't do everything. But obviously it's not exactly a career with much progression, so who knows what her future holds.

Yes, this sounds familiar...last year DS applied for several warehouse jobs. Candidates were asked to purchase their own high vis jacket and attend an interview on X date. Interview time and location to be confirmed once they texted the number in the advert....texts then never went through! It was probably a scam. But when you're desperate for something, anything can seem reasonable.

I have moments of immense frustration with DS's situation as he generally only gets a couple of shifts a week but reading this thread has made me just so grateful he's got anything at all. God knows when and if he'll ever get a 'proper' job.

DD messaged yesterday to say she's got no shifts in the next fortnight. Now shes got 1 x 4 hr shift...i (and im sure she) would rather she had set hours and know she was getting paid £x per month, but it took a lot of applications before getting this job, and she gets on with her colleagues and seems to enjoy it when she does go.

It is madness.
You used to see an ad, apply for a form to fill in and send it back, or fill in a form on their website. Send it back, maybe with a covering letter. They get in touch with a date for an interview, and you do it and hopefully get the job.

Now it is see an ad, apply at 10pm and have it rejected at 10:05pm because of AI. No actual person sees it.
Or you apply, and get sent links to do silly tests that are nothing to do with the actual job. Not one interview, but 3, including a group one for a shopping picker job (saw that on here).

But that’s always been the case. There’s always been unadvertised jobs. I believe the recent huge increase in ghost job adverts and scams has far outweighed this.

I see this a lot on FB. In local groups, someone posts about a job vacancy... and you click on the link and it says the post is no longer available. This is within minutes of it being posted too. Then it says to send in your details anyway, but for what?

There’s also a lot of jobs that aren’t being advertised. A lot of companies in London are offering bonuses to existing staff if they recommend a friend who ends up being employed by them. It’s safer than employing a complete unknown, and no agency fees to pay too.

As for how many jobs are available at the moment, how is this being measured? If it’s going by job adverts then a lot of these adverts are ghost job adverts, self-employed “opportunities” that are bordering on scams, even MLMs sometimes advertise on jobs boards.

If we want to know how many real, actual jobs are available, and how many of those adverts will actually result in someone being recruited where the client won’t suddenly have a hiring freeze after five rounds of interviews, the number is going to be a lot lower. There are literally millions of people applying for jobs that don’t even exist.

That's a very interesting approach and makes a lot of sense. I like the idea a lot

Yeah so do I.

And yes I would employ our teens, and their friends.

I think parents need to ask themselves if they themselves would hire their children for 40 hour a week, NMW or over jobs where they have employment rights from day one and can't be easily fired. And if they wouldn't, why do they expect employers to do so?

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 03/03/2026 08:06

I honestly just dont think the jobs are out there. And what are are ridiculously difficult to apply for and over subscribed by tens of people.

a factory near me just laid of 1000 workers in a warehouse last week due to automation

anither had just accounted 180 jobs to go soon.

so that another 1180 people out of work

these are all entry jobs they someone could have gone into and worked up. So chances are being removed from our kids.

watched a documentary about robots and robot taxis etc seems the more tech advances the less humans are needed

I've no idea how they could legally do this without stopping the standard element for those living elsewhere too. It would be blatant discrimination. You can't expect parents ( many solely reliant on benefits themselves) to fund adult offspring.

Same.
Kids go on to age out of the child benefits that the parents get. For some parents, that money was vital. If their young adult kid struggles to get a job then they still need money coming in.

I know there were proposals to not allow young adults claim sickness benefits, which also makes no sense to me.

EatYourDamnPie · 01/03/2026 17:31

That’s what people don’t see or want to see. There are jobs out there, great! But there are also a lot of people applying for the same jobs.

DM has a cleaning company and I asked her how much interest she gets for job vacancies now.
She has an ad up right now for a 2 hour per week job, and has had nearly 80 people apply. They have been all ages, including graduates. People are desperate for anything right now.

Maybe because you asked not him @RhaenysRocks? Some use that as a simple way to see if someone may be suitable. If he goes in he may have more luck.

I literally just said oh you have a job going? I've got a teen..pretty much didn't get any further. Obviously I'd have sent him down. I didn't hand in his cv or anything. I know the point you're making and agree with it but the owner was so quick to jump in it was clear he wasn't interested at all in a young employee.

ThisSharpShaker · 01/03/2026 23:10

It's a pity the shop owner didn't want to give your son a trial. Sometimes something has happened in the past to put employers off.

I passed 2 places within a few hundred yards with help wanted signs up - get a shitty job anything because it’s far easier to get work when you are in work.

Our local greengrocer had one up. I asked about it for my 16 yo and was immediately told it was filled. He didn't take the sign down though.
