To think if you can't understand English/Welsh or Gaelic you shouldn't be voting in a British election?

Is this unreasonable?

The Greens desperation is doing serious damage to their brand.

I'm very sorry if you missed my point and that is all I shall say. Of course I think people with poor English should have a right to vote. It was my whole point. It's OP and people with these kinds of views who might suggest thta intelligence can be measured and policed. I think you know I meant that, really.

As it goes, the prison population - who you mention- are one of the very few groups that do not get a vote.

It is also deeply deeply offensive to suggest that people whose first language isn't English shouldn't vote.

Not sure what your beef is. Perhaps address the OP's point?

I’ll address whatever I like. Your post was offensive by implying that people with low levels of literacy lack intelligence.

DoAWheelie · 25/02/2026 20:15

Nice to know you think deaf signers and other non-verbal disabled people shouldn't be able to vote OP.

Ermmm. Deliberate irony missed there.

So patronising and superior. Ok then.

What about English speakers who have low levels of literacy and can barely read or write English? Are they allowed to vote? Or would you like to suggest intelligence tests, too, while you're at it.

How patronising. Some people struggle to acquire good levels of literacy for genuine reasons and it has nothing to do with intelligence. It is, however, a precursor to ongoing challenges including a propensity to criminality. Up to 50% of prisoners are functionally illiterate.

FreshInks · 25/02/2026 19:08

I don’t agree with the OP. But immediately jumping to accusations of racism or hurling insults is exactly the kind of reaction that fuels Reform’s rise in popularity. If people want to challenge their appeal, the only effective way to do it is through calm, constructive engagement. Shutting conversations down with insults just pushes more people in their direction, you may as well be campaigning for them.

JohnBullshit · 25/02/2026 19:04

Why is this troubling you? It's not a new thing, nor is it exclusive to the Green Party.

Don't be daft. Of course you should learn the language of the country that you've chosen to live in.

There is nothing to say the lucky bilingual people accessing this material don't speak English. They may be more fluent in their mother tongues.

Election materials, NHS leaflets, council publications, national questionnaires, the census - have all been produced in community languages for decades now. This seems to have only become a talking point since about 2021. Funny that.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/02/2026 19:00

I don't think racists and bigots should vote, but we live in a democracy.

FaceEatingLeopard · 25/02/2026 18:58

You really don't have to look too far or too hard to find a large percentage of so-called native English speakers to understand that it is not just those pesky forriners who can't speak or understand the language.

I suppose the OP is yet another bloody Reform shill. So obvious.

Piggywaspushed · 25/02/2026 18:58

I'm confused. This seems extremely on brand for the Greens and not damaging at all . I can't see what damage it does in the eyes of anyone who is inclined to share their values.

UpAndDownAllTheTime · 25/02/2026 18:58

There are plenty of fuckwit english speakers around.

Most of the awful people you want to disenfranchise, who don't speak english, are women. It's not that the Greens should not be speaking to them, it's that every party should be speaking to them.

ScullyD · 25/02/2026 18:58

Reform voter alert, ding ding ding

StrawberriesandBrylcream · 25/02/2026 18:57

Why is this an issue for you? If someone lives here and is eligible to vote, what's the problem with producing campaign content in any language they might more readily engage with? I have a much bigger problem with inaccuracies and dishonesty in campaign content than what language its available in.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/02/2026 18:57

I woke up this morning and decided to join a parenting site just to make a first post to moan about multiculturalism?
Perfectly natural - it happens all the time nowadays.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

icouldholditwithacobweb · 25/02/2026 18:57

No, but I do think anyone who immigrates and lives here and does not already speak passable English should be provided with English lessons and required to pass a basic English language test after 6 months - Denmark requires this, and it's so sensible and helps with integration.

And yes, I have lived abroad and yes, I learned the language. It's absurdly alienating to be unable to communicate in the native language of the country you have moved to.

What exactly are you on about?
My problem is that far too many people vote without even a rudimentary understanding of how our political system works. That's far more prevalent than being unable to speak any of our national languages, and leaves people vulnerable to unscrupulous grifters.
