I get SAD the wrong way round. No one else I'm my life has it , but I find spring really depressing and unsettling . Anyone else?

I totally understand this...I love autumn and don't mind winter (although we have horses so very more enjoyment out of then in the drier months obviously).

I'm interested though.... people who aren't a fan of spring/ summer.... would you describe yourself as introverts? Because my autumn happy feeling i have realised is somewhat connected to drawing curtains... feeling safe in my own private space etc. I don't mean I feel unsafe at other times, but i find autumn gives me more restorative alone time indoors. Curious to know if this is a common theme.

deepseaargyllfish · 25/02/2026 07:27

having said all of the above, I always feel a bit grief stricken, and mourn the passing of the summer solstice. Right now it comforts me to think this is only three and a half months away.

deepseaargyllfish · 25/02/2026 07:24

I know exactly what you mean and relate 100%.

it’s as though during winter, you have permission to retreat inside and become a bit of a homebody / hermit. The longer evenings, milder air, reawakening of the natural world - for me - is profoundly unsettling.

I think it’s like having a comforting duvet whipped off you. It’s a more sociable season. More pressure / expectation to be outside, ‘doing things’, seeing people, etc.

Some years it doesn’t trouble me quite as much, but if I’m even slightly depressed I find it very difficult. This year it’s going to get to me, I can already tell.

interestingly, suicide rates peak in April, while they are usually quite low in the depths of winter, so there’s something to it. And as TS Elliott said,

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.

I remember seeing you post on a thread last year and we both felt the same regarding the cold dark months. We hate them 😂.

And yes Halloween and Christmas can piss off far far away 😊.

Edited

Yes, same feeling here.

Pricelessadvice · 25/02/2026 07:07

I’m the opposite. As soon as the temperature goes up a few degrees and the days get longer and lighter, my whole body seems so much lighter and happier.
We have horses, so winter is just one long depressing, exhausting slog 😂

fantom · 25/02/2026 07:05

Yes I do. Spranxiety I call it. I think it’s pressure to be more productive, be out and about and on the go. Everything revving up and fertile.

Yeah it definitely is. It's the change. I like the change to autumn as it gets smaller and cosier and there's all the best bits of the year , halloween, loads of birthdays and Christmas

I feel the same and always have.
I love September to Christmas the best.
Spring freaks me out too and I dislike the heat & long days of Summer.

I rarely express it though because I find people think it's an odd way to feel so I usually go along with the norm & pretend to rejoice that spring is on the way.

Glad to hear from this thread that I am not alone!

ainsleysanob · 25/02/2026 06:53

Yes! Me. My lethargy and mood drops when the clocks change.

ArcticBells · 25/02/2026 06:51

Yes, me and I thought I was the only one. I love the dark evenings and the feeling of hibernation. I dread the clocks changing. My favourite months are January and February when Christmas is over and it’s cold and bleak outside.

Ihatethistimeline · 25/02/2026 06:31

I love Spring. Seeing plants emerging, birds singing, longer and lighter days, (could do without the mating foxes). It’s such a positive season.

User0311 · 25/02/2026 06:30

My husband is like this! Loves autumn and winter and soon as spring comes around he is miserable. I’m the complete opposite

EleanorReally · 25/02/2026 06:23

it is such a relief to drive in the light
i just love the birds singing

EleanorReally · 25/02/2026 06:21

quite the opposite

pilates · 25/02/2026 06:18

I’m the opposite. I love Spring; lighter warmer weather, daffodils, tulips and Easter.

Sux2buthen · 25/02/2026 06:12

Absolutely agree, roll on spooky cold, dark and festive season

ThePoshUns · 25/02/2026 06:00

No my mood improves vastly in Spring

CakeMeHomeIveSeenEnough · 25/02/2026 02:36

Spring is okay or even nice, but when it starts to get 'too warm' as summer approaches, I do feel a little down about that. I dread hot weather and everything that comes with it.

DirtyBird · 25/02/2026 02:07

I do. I’ve been this way since I graduated from college. Not sure what it is. Well part of it is that it means summer is near and I where I live it’s extremely hot and I hate the heat. But I’ve also felt like this when I lived in a cooler country

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 24/02/2026 23:59

Yes autumn is my favourite season by far.

Apologynotaccepted · 24/02/2026 23:58

No I'm not an introvert, very extrovert in fact. I don't stay in all winter or I'm the summer. It really is just the light stretching . Such a weird feeling !

NotMeAtAll · 24/02/2026 23:56

I love January and February. It's still wintery, but Christmas is over.

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 24/02/2026 23:56

No,but it's a Thing, you're not the only one

TheWibble · 24/02/2026 23:53

I'm another autumn/winter lover. I like the cold and dark. Can't stand heat and bright sunshine, so spring signals that summer will be on it's way soon.
Are you an introvert? I most definitely am, and people always want to socialise in the warmer months. At least in the winter I can be undisturbed and go into hibernation mode.

Contrarymary30 · 24/02/2026 23:48

I love spring and feel really down in October because the dull cold months are approaching!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 24/02/2026 23:45

I panic in March and April when I can no longer wear my winter clothes, especially coat. I am overweight and feel so exposed with lighter clothes. I also have to try on everything each season as I fluctuate weight so much and then whittle down what fits for the season. I usually have to buy a few bits which I find really stressful. Once the summer hits I've found some peace with myself. It sounds daft but that's how it is.
