personally I’m not bothered that meat is killed in certain ways, I think if you eat meat you need to make peace with the entire process being pretty horrible for the animals.

But if you’re going to have issues with halal slaughter, you also need to have an issue with kosher slaughter. It’s the exact same process, just with different prayers said. The slaughter process is the same in both methods - the animal has its throat slit and they are left to have the blood drain out.

I welcome this. I eat mostly vegetarian and moving towards a plant based diet due to the horror of this industry. I actively avoid halal and also do not believe we should be saying Muslim prayers in slaughterhouses in the Uk.

What's the issue with Muslim prayers being played in the UK?

AFAIK butchers have to display info about the origin of the meat, including the slaughter house. If one was concerned, you could look at the abattoir code to see if they do halal/kosher slaughter or not.
I didn't know that about the Jews not eating the rear of the animal. Can anyone tell me why?
I don't know why any of the halal animals are given elsewhere, go into any halal butcher and you find not only the meat, but innards, chicken feet, eyeballs, testicles....not much goes to waste to be going to other butchers.

Edited

Yes, the slaughterhouse code is displayed on the label. A recent example of poor labelling was a friend who purchased chicken drumsticks from Costco. Slaughterhouse was halal. Not mentioned anywhere on the label that the bird was halal, because by halal standards it probably wasn’t (not processed by a halal butcher), but it was still religiously slaughtered. Google ‘slaughterhouse 2653’ and it will tell you. Anyone can do this by searching the code whilst at the supermarket. It’s certainly eye opening.

At the end of the day, slaughterhouses are a business, and they’re not just going to stop working when they have supplied all the halal butcher’s.

This.

I am vegetarian and think it is cruel to eat meat full stop. However, if an animal is to be slaughtered, it should be pre stunned properly. There should definitely be proper labelling and, in fact, I would like to see non-stun slaughter banned completely in the UK. If this doesn't meet some people's requirements, then they can go veggie.

I’m vegetarian too, not here to preach before anyone jumps on me to say I am.
Rest of my family eat meat and I don’t have an issue with that. I cook meat for my family just don’t eat it myself.
I do have an issue with the method of slaughter and that we should have a choice about buying stunned or halal/kosher rather than just a blanket of non stunned.
I know that slaughter houses have got their job to do but I’ve seen footage of animals being able to see those in front being killed, animals being beaten and abused too. This doesn’t happen at ALL slaughter houses but does at some. That cruelty is what I object to.
People who say “oh but they don’t know what’s going to happen to them” are wrong.
Animals do know, they can smell it and hear it. I realise I’ve gone off on a tangent here!
Humane slaughter is what is important and in my opinion non stunned slaughter is not humane.

pocketpairs · 25/02/2026 11:31

Have the upmost respect for anyone who avoids meat. Think those that are eat meat, yet have issues with how the animal is slaughtered are hypocrites (& probably need to go back to finish their GCSEs!!).

Just think for a second..the animal is being KILLED for their pleasure..so they can EAT it..yet they apparently care about the animals welfare...sadly people without a brain won't understand this.

crumpetswithcheeze · 25/02/2026 10:50

Agree with this. Although one thing I have learned recently, is that the hindquarters of an animal are rarely eaten by Jews. This obviously means that half of the carcass of each kosher slaughtered animal goes into the usual human food chain - ie, it’s been religiously slaughtered, not stunned, but isn’t labelled as kosher because Jews don’t want to eat it. This is why the Facebook groups have come about, because people are unknowingly buying religiously slaughtered meat.

Similar with halal slaughter. Once the halal butchers have all the meat they need to process from the halal slaughterhouses, any ‘excess’ just gets sent to normal butchers. It isn’t labelled as halal, because technically it isn’t as it hasn’t been processed by a halal butcher, but the animal has still been religiously slaughtered.

In my opinion, if it’s not acceptable to inadvertently give a muslim / Jew non halal / kosher meat, then it’s not acceptable to give a non-muslim / Jew with concerns about animal welfare, religiously slaughtered meat.

Treacling · 25/02/2026 11:18

If you are writing your supermarkets ‘full non recoverable stun’ is the phrase to use apparently.

Treacling · 25/02/2026 11:17

My understanding is that animals are lightly stunned, they recover, then are slaughtered whilst conscious. This is to get around legislation. And supermarkets can therefore say ‘yes it was stunned’ .

All meat should be labelled ‘full stun’ ‘partial stun’ ‘halal’ and ‘kosher’ . I also believe all non stun meat should be outlawed in Britain.

I do not eat meat (ethical reasons) but buy it for my children to eat and I will no longer buy supermarket meat due to their poor labelling.

crumpetswithcheeze · 25/02/2026 11:16

grammargran · 25/02/2026 11:07

Because it's the Islamophobes that want the label as a dog whistle. They don't care if it's stunned or not, hence they don't care if it's kosher.

I think it’s more likely to be the case that, in certain areas of the country it’s difficult to find a restaurant that sells non halal meat. I’ve never walked into any eatery and seen a sign saying ‘kosher’.

Yes, I’m sure all racists are against halal meat, but not everyone who opposes halal meat is racist.

crumpetswithcheeze · 25/02/2026 11:13

grammargran · 25/02/2026 11:06

It is the case. The vast majority is stunned. It is very difficult to find halal butchers that only sells unstunned meat.

The unstunned halal number falls in the region of 12-28.8% which according to a quick online search is 27-30 million animals per year. That’s a huge number.

Not sure about kosher, but to be halal, the animal must have access to food/drink right up until the time of slaughter, must not see another animal being slaughtered or see the knife either.

Shouldn’t that be the same in most slsughterhouses?

JHound · 25/02/2026 11:12

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 25/02/2026 08:49

@JHound, we have a law in this country that animals must be stunned before slaughter. Animals slaughtered for Halal and Kosher meat are currently exempted from this law and as a result experience greater suffering. You don’t care how much suffering those animals experience? Dear God!

I find the care about weirdly hypocritical when you have no issue with the animal being slaughtered for your personal benefit.

”Yes please slit it’s throat so I can have a filet mignon….but do it nicely!”

🤣

grammargran · 25/02/2026 11:10

Obeseandashamed · 25/02/2026 08:02

Stunned doesn’t necessarily mean an animal can’t feel the slaughter. The slit throat means that the death is almost instant with the halal/kosher method of slaughter so whilst it sounds more painful, the loss of consciousness within seconds means it’s over quickly then the draining of blood takes place for hygiene reasons. Stunned processes often take longer and as the stun lasts momentarily it can be more traumatic for the animals. Stunning by can be like paralysis, seeing, hearing and knowing you’re being killed with no way of stopping it. Also halal and kosher is not just about the way an animal is slaughtered and a prayer. An animal cannot be sick, old, diseased etc and also must be looked after before slaughter.

Halal labelling is utterly meaningless and is a dogwhistle.

Labelling that makes clear the method of slaughter would be meaningful to assist consumers in making decisions based on (relative) welfare grounds.

The vast majority of halal meat comes from animals stunned before slaughter, so undifferentiated 'halal' labelling doesn't provide useful information.

I wrote to Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s (Lidl and Aldi as well but they didn’t reply) and all 3 replied saying that the slaughter law in this country is that animals are stunned but prayers are said before slaughter for Halal. If you go to a specialty Halal butcher I don’t suppose this is the case

WiseMoose · 25/02/2026 10:58

Makes no difference to me - we don't need to eat animals.

The whole lifespan of an animal bred for their flesh, or eggs/milk is cruel and it blows my mind how any one can still partake in farming animals for food.

To be fair, by the time the slaughter comes around the animals would probably be glad their short life of torture is at an end.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/02/2026 10:56

Why don’t Jews want to stun the animal first? Surely they have welfare concerns.

EasternStandard · 25/02/2026 10:55

Longtalljosie · 25/02/2026 07:46

That’s a shame. Perhaps it’ll happen at some point. Most get clear labelling around food is a good idea and this is part of that.

crumpetswithcheeze · 25/02/2026 10:50

Nosejobnelly · 25/02/2026 08:25

Kosher meat has always been labelled as such. Only a kosher restaurant/butcher would stock kosher meat as it’s so expensive - this is due to the stringent laws of kashrut and having a qualified person on the premises to ensure the laws are observed..
Certain supermarkets may stock it in areas where Jews reside, but it will be in the kosher section so no-one would inadvertently buy it.
Halal is different as many restaurants use halal to cater for Muslims. It’s usually indicated on the menu.

Agree with this. Although one thing I have learned recently, is that the hindquarters of an animal are rarely eaten by Jews. ThatThisThatYou · 24/02/2026 19:16

Lots of animals are slaughtered religiously but they are not labelled as such. There’s loads of Facebook groups researching which slaughter codes are religiously slaughtered. Most supermarket meat is and is not labelled as halal or kosher.

Hold on, if there is no label how do these facebook groups know that most supermarket meat is halal, and also what would be the point? Because if its halal but not labelled as such muslims won't buy it?

Sounds like we need a few facts from reputable sources....

Personally I’d like to avoid kosher meat. Not stunning the animal in any circumstances is incredibly cruel.

But as a former vegetarian, you're ok with the incredible cruelty in the dairy and egg industry? The focus on some imaginary special privileges for kosher meat and the people who eat it seems oddly selective, I wonder why. If you want to avoid it, just don't buy meat labelled as kosher.

Nincompoo · 25/02/2026 08:59

I’d like to be able to avoid meat that hadn’t been stunned or had been recoverable-ly stunned prior to being killed and to be honestly I find it pretty disgraceful the it’s allowed to happen in this country anyway.

I’d be all for a ban of religiously slaughtered meat. We’re supposed to be a country of animal lovers if sticking by that means a minority have to eat more vegetables then 🤷🏽‍♀️

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 25/02/2026 08:56

ExtraOnions · 24/02/2026 19:24

People who protest about Halal are very quiet when it comes to Kosher … you could almost think that they didn’t give a monkeys about the animal, and were using it as a stick to beat Muslims with.

@ExtraOnions , I don’t believe that’s true at all. I do not believe that we should accept in our nation a method of slaughter which subjects the animals to unnecessary suffering whichever sky fairy’s name that slaughter is carried out in.
