To be annoyed at partner booking a trip…

inkyspells · 24/02/2026 18:10

I have wanted to go away for ages but due partners work we have to wait till June for our main holiday.
Today he texts me saying he has booked 2 nights in Gran Canaria next weekend.
We don’t get there till 5pm Saturday and come home 5pm monday.
What is the point
The flights were only £40 return but still ridiculous
Aibu to be annoyed ?

I’d love it if my husband did that. Change of scenery for a couple of days, some sun.

The plane is going regardless of OP being in row 22 or not.

🤦‍♀️ the point is that the plane wouldn't be going if idiots like the OP's DP didn't book trips like this.

But you don’t know how they arrange their finances. DH and I have a joint account and have done for years.

No personal money? Sounds horrific.

Highstool · 25/02/2026 10:46

It sounds like she's been complaining for "ages" that they can't go away because of his job and he's tried to do something to fix that.

Op you could always enjoy the weekend with DP and stay on for a few days by yourself. In fact, why haven't you just organised a trip for yourself previously if it's been so badly wanted?

UpDownAllAround1 · 25/02/2026 10:41

Not time to buy new clothes? Really would piss me off. Dont be silly

He’s not “wasting” her money, is he?

She has agreed to go and said thank you.

However, for her, this trip is not a treat. Surely you can picture a surprise for you that would not be welcome. A steak restaurant when
you aren’t fond of red meat, a Eurostar trip when you don’t like tunnels or whatever.

Bur she likes holidays and has said she likes holidays. She is currently meh because of the travel element vs time away. Instead of embracing a weekend away and recognising he tried to do something nice she is putting a downer on it and determined to not enjoy it. As another person said treat the moment you leave as the start of a trip. She should look at it as Saturday am to Monday pm doing something different to every other weekend and bonus sunshine is a treat thought out by a loving partner.

If she would prefer him to be sat in front of football (or her) and her in Tescos (or him) then perhaps don't keep moaning to him that they aren't going away until June. It seems to me he can't win whatever he does.

Or he is a nice bloke organising a treat for his partner and his partner is being a killjoy.

He's either a control freak who decides what you do without consulting you, or he's shit at surprises and has chosen something that doesn't meet your wishes.

To TeamDP posters - what would have been so bad about DP texting OP to say “I’ve seen these flights to GC, only £40 and looks like we can get a hotel for £100 a night and boss says I can take next Monday off. I know you wanted to go away - do you fancy it or would you prefer something closer?”

Spirallingdownwards · 25/02/2026 10:20

Sounds like fun and you will only need hand luggage so no lengthy airport "stay". Enjoy the sunshine!

Some partners can't win can they!

You're so right. OP can't get a main holiday to June to their other half's work, then they get landed with a short break that doesn't work the way they like to do things. No, OP can't win.

SpringingUpAgain · 25/02/2026 10:17

BIossomtoes · 25/02/2026 09:52

No, I’m not sure any more than you are. I’m assuming because if I did something similar I’d pay for it all. Most elements would be paid in advance.

All OP has said is her dp has booked the flights. That doesn't even confirm he's paid for them let alone anything else! Talk about jumping to conclusions based on your own circumstances. Not everyone gets everything paid for by partners you know.

IsItSnowing · 25/02/2026 10:16

I'd be very happy if my DH did this. A quick weekend away. Some sun. What's not to like.
A 4 hour flight is hardly an ordeal. People do places like Dubai and New York for a weekend.
Personally, I'd rather make it a long weekend but still.

Bloozie · 25/02/2026 10:15

I'd find it a slog. It's quite a long flight to Gran Canaria, you have to be at the airport for 2 hours before the flight... It's a lot of travel for very little return.

But SUPER sweet and thoughtful of your partner to book it.

Also, waiting until June for your main holiday is kinda typical. I can't afford a non-main holiday this year, let alone a main one. You sound brattish.

I went Amsterdam with my son for a gig on Thursday 12 Feb got there at 10am flew back 7pm 13th we had a feb few hours and even went Amsterdam to do shopping was a pain pushing a suitcase but love it but was awake from 3.30 am Thursday till 12.30 am Friday morning as was at a gig lol so was tired haha 😂 I'm.to old for this crap now haha

MayaPinion · 25/02/2026 10:12

It would probably feel less weird to you if he’d said Friday to Sunday rather than Saturday to Monday. You could also easily spend 5-hours driving to a weekend break - London to Edinburgh wouldn’t be unreasonable for a mini break. The travel is half the fun. A book, an audio book or a couple of podcasts, and some music, and you’re good to go.

Mumwithbaggage · 25/02/2026 10:11

We went to Majorca overnight once. Drinks, late dinner, board games, market, barbecue lunch, swim and chill then home. Also done overnighters to Bergen and to Stockholm. It's all in the attitude. It's a longer flight for you though - just decide your holiday starts the second you leave your home and doesn't finish till you're back. Download a good film for the plane or take a book you've always been meaning to read.

BrickBiscuit · 25/02/2026 10:10

MayaPinion · 25/02/2026 10:06

Ooh I go in a heartbeat. A glass of champagne and a mooch around the shops at the airport, the warm air getting off the airplane, dinner out, sunbathing, lunch with a glass of rose, down to the beach for a swim in the sea, getting ready for dinner, cocktails, bit of shopping and sunbathing on the Monday, nice lunch, and then back home. Sounds wonderful.

Shinyhappyapple · 25/02/2026 10:02

justwantthispaintostop · 25/02/2026 06:49

To be fair that’s not really normal. Unless there’s a huge time difference flying isn’t that tiring.

I dont think its the flying itself that’s tiring - I tend to be tired the first day as we often have really early flights, so I sleep quite badly as I’m afraid I’ll miss my 3.30 am alarm!

And I’ve seen a lot of people on MN saying that they find airports themselves tiring and stressful - so much so that they no longer wish to travel abroad.

ReyRey12 · 25/02/2026 10:01

I wouldn't want to go to canary islands for 2 night either. Would rather have some type of staycation. A lot of travel for the duration. It is better than the one day lapland trips that one travel agency offer.

However, this seems like one of those situations where I would go along and tell my partner that it is nice of them to organise a trip but in the future maybe something closer if it is only 2 nights.

Even if they are paid in advance, they may be paid from a joint account.

ETA by the way, if you are not sure, posting "She’s not paying for it, he’s already paid for it." doesn't indicate a lack of certainty

I assume the opposite, I doubt he’s planning to pay for it all. But only OP can say.
