To be annoyed at partner booking a trip…

I have wanted to go away for ages but due partners work we have to wait till June for our main holiday.
Today he texts me saying he has booked 2 nights in Gran Canaria next weekend.
We don’t get there till 5pm Saturday and come home 5pm monday.
What is the point
The flights were only £40 return but still ridiculous
Aibu to be annoyed ?

I think you’ll get a lot of stick here, it sounds to me more tiring than a break.

surely a sensible thing would have been to just book somewhere in the UK where you don’t have to travel for hours and hours to get to?

seems like a kind thought, but badly planned out.

Tiring? What part of this sounds tiring?

To be fair that’s not really normal. Unless there’s a huge time difference flying isn’t that tiring.

I would find it tiring.

I don’t think it’s “normal” to find it tiring or to find it fine. Either is possible. Which is why the DP in question could have checked and said “hey, I can get Monday the 10th off and I’ve spotted these flights, what do you think?”

Beautifulsunflowers · 25/02/2026 06:52

Sounds to me like he’s tried to do something nice and not got it quite right!

I get it’s barely worth it, and it will be a tiring trip for not very long but look at it another way, he’s treating you, he wants to be with you for a weekend, it’s an adventure!!
Go and have fun!

I'm confused about some of these responses. When I'm flying anything over two hours I'll be really tired the next day so if my husband booked me a two night stay in the Canaries I'd be annoyed at the lack of consideration too. I'd basically be spending an entire weekend tired and having to pretend to be grateful - no thanks!

SoManyFidgetToys · 25/02/2026 06:47

I’m assuming he’s also booked a place to stay reasonably close to the hotel? Have you been to Gran Canaria before? Honestly it’s a really easy place to visit, it basically exists for tourists so everything is set up for you.

Once you get through the airport head to your hotel to check in, go out for the evening - lots of decent restaurants and warm enough to just stroll around. Sunday is a full day at the beach, soak up the vitamin D and relax. Monday morning you can be at the beach or
whatever then head to the airport.

Personally I’d be happy with that trip. If it’s not worth the money or travel time to you then I guess you can tell him that. But it seems like a nice thoughtful thing to do.

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2026 06:46

It’s too far for such a short stay and - whatever the destination - it shouldn’t have been booked without checking.

Lots of people are keen on these short of mini breaks / extreme day trips with cheap flights. Personally I think a city would've been a better choice than a day in Gran Canaria.

It's not clear from your op but presumably this trip won't replace your June main holiday? If it does then of course you are right to be a bit annoyed. If not then I guess you could view it as a quite sweet but slightly misguided gesture from your other half. Make the most of it. Find out where you are staying, book a nice restaurant and plan a daytime activity that you enjoy.

This would annoy me for several reasons. Firstly because I would want to go for longer and its a lot of travelling for one full day. Yes the flights are cheap but it just screams a lack of thought or consideration had gone into it and that would annoy me.

Talk about it. See if he can extend the holiday or cancel and book somewhere else.

Why does it scream lack of thought and consideration?

Maybe he thought about the short time and travel and thought it worth it anyway for a short adventure.

Just because you, or op, wouldn't think it worth it, doesn't mean he's wrong and thoughtless.

AgnesMcDoo · 25/02/2026 06:31

I’d be delighted.

PersephoneParlormaid · 25/02/2026 06:29

Enjoy the airport before (have a meal), enjoy the flight (have a drink or two), that makes it a full weekend away. Be positive!

YANBU - taking unnecessary short haul flights for 1.5 days of 'holiday' is pretty grim when respected scientists are literally begging us to change our habits and take the climate crisis seriously. I'd like my daughter to have a future please.

Pretty sure this isn't a private plane and will still fly if op and her partner are not on it.

Op, if you don't want to go, don't go. Let dh go on his own or see if a friend fancies joining him.

But don't be annoyed he has tried to arrange something spontaneous and fun.

He got it wrong for you...that doesn't mean he got it wrong full stop.

neversaynevereverforever · 25/02/2026 06:21

It’s a long journey for 2 nights and that’s not allowing for flight delay. I would still go though.

User0311 · 25/02/2026 06:17

I would be packing my bag! Lovely gesture

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 25/02/2026 06:14

I would love my husband to do this for me but I know he never will

MyGammyEye · 25/02/2026 06:06

I holiday in the Canaries and I find the flight, airport time too long and draining.

For 2 nights I'd fly for 2 hours but that would be it for me.

Banannanana · 25/02/2026 05:38

This is so ungrateful and spoilt. I’d be thrilled if my partner booked a weekend away.

newornotnew · 25/02/2026 05:04

I don't think trips away should be booked unilaterally, so I understand the frustration OP.

It also depends how much spare cash you have jointly, because if this eats your main holiday budget it isn't ok to make that choice for you.

user1492757084 · 25/02/2026 04:44

What a dear man your spouse is.
Go; have a great weekend.

Then you snap up a surprise cheap weekend another time, that is not your main holiday, that gives you more lovely weather and a relaxing time together.

It's so lucky to be able to take advantage of that type of trip.

Cyclebabble · 25/02/2026 04:34

He has cocked up the timings a bit but the thought was there. IS it too late to extend a day or two? If the flights are cheap ish, this might be possible. If not just enjoy.

ginasevern · 24/02/2026 18:30

That sounds great. My DH never did anything like that for me in our whole 26 year relationship. He didn't even book a meal in a restaurant. You'll have all of Saturday evening to enjoy a nice meal and some wine/cocktails, then a lovely relaxing Sunday in the sun and another nice meal in the evening , and then Monday you can still do some stuff. Fucking hell OP, unless there's a massive drip feed, what's not to like!

my husband never booked anything either ever

ApeachAndaGoodBook · 25/02/2026 02:44

Isn't a full day in Spain worth your time?

Evaka · 25/02/2026 02:26

Can't believe the shit you're catching here. He's booked a ridiculous itinerary without consulting you? I wouldn't go.
