To be annoyed at partner booking a trip…

I have wanted to go away for ages but due partners work we have to wait till June for our main holiday.
Today he texts me saying he has booked 2 nights in Gran Canaria next weekend.
We don’t get there till 5pm Saturday and come home 5pm monday.
What is the point
The flights were only £40 return but still ridiculous
Aibu to be annoyed ?

I did 2 nights in fuerteventura last winter. It was great, lovely sunshine and meals out for a couple of days, gave me a real boost! I think it’s really thoughtful of him.

Sounds great! I know it isn’t a long time there but as soon as you get off that plane you’ll relax & feel like you’ve been away for ages. A change is as good as a rest.

How do you know how OP is going to feel?!

Lots of people wouldnt feel relaxed as soon as they get off a plane. Many feel exhausted and need a nights sleep to get back on track.

OneShyQuail · 25/02/2026 07:46

Whats that saying? Count your blessings

I don't think she does! I would hate to do all that traveling for 2 days, costs so much to get to airport, transfers etc. plus it's a good 4.5 hours flight, which could get delayed! I've traveled to canaries a lot and would not consider going for less than 5 days for above reasons! Obvs this is just my view but if someone sprung a two day trip with that much traveling on me I wouldn't be impressed no matter how kind or thoughtful they were trying to be!

Depends how close you live to an airport.

it doesn’t have to cost a ton, my local airport has buses at the £3 cap. Honestly how do some of you survive, making everything into a great ordeal?

inkyspells · 25/02/2026 07:45

I’m deffo not spoilt at all
its the fact it’s only going to be 1 day in the sun
We will get there and he will say he is too tired to do anything the first night.
So the second day will come and go and if it’s a rubbish day …we have travelled all that way for mothing
I Honestly would of preferred a couple of nights in the lakes or something
obviously I’m going and I’ve said Thankyou

I personally dont see the point either. Some people like trips like that but I dont. Unless you two have a habit of going away for such short trips or discussed that you would like to do that he is very unreasonable to book it without checking it with you.
Not sure why people are calling you spoilt. I would hate if someone sprung that onto me.

Evergreen21 · 25/02/2026 07:43

@Whaleandsnail6 presumably he knows the op better than you or I do. If you know your partner loves surprises or spontaneity and would see a very short trip as an adventure then fair enough. However, from the op that doesn't sound like him or her. Instead it sounds like she has been wanting a holiday and he's booked a quick trip without properly considering flight times and how much actual time they will get to spend there. Again if it's an addition to their main holiday then fair enough but if it's not then I would be disappointed that he has given no thought to flight times. The op doesn't say if she has dependants.

Ophir · 25/02/2026 07:42

Relax and treat the whole trip as part of the break, the airport is much better with just a tiny bag, have drinks, buy nice snacks for the plane, and enjoy a couple of days of sunshine and meals out

Don’t go then? You sound so spoilt.

Perhaps your partner doesn't know you as well as you thought? Many people do this and enjoy it, many don't. I think if this isn't your thing you're entitled to feel annoyed - at the lack of thought for you?

It’s still not tiring. Maybe if it’s a really early flight, being tired that day is understandable. But if you’re healthy and exhausted for that long after travelling, you need to see a doctor.

Again: people are different. HTH.

Flight plus travel to the airport at each end plus hanging round the airport for a couple of hours before each flight.

And people are different. Hope that helps.

As a healthy adult, a short flight should not be tiring you to the point of being exhausted the next day.

AfternoonTeaAddict · 25/02/2026 07:19

For £40 return I think I'd just look on it as an adventure.

I'm Australian and my father used to get last minute weekend deals for Singapore and Hong Kong from Melbourne when i was growing up. We'd leave Friday after school/work and come back Sunday evening. I recall it being a fun, slightly dream-like experience. And it was fun on Mondays when i was asked 'what did you do at the weekend? ' 'Went to Singapore'.

ZenNudist · 25/02/2026 07:17

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2026 07:05

She won’t have “most of Monday” if the flight is at 5pm.

It’s a trip for two people, both of them should agree it’s something they would enjoy before it is booked.

Depending on how quick airport transfer is she could get up at 8, have a lovely leisurely breakfast, be by the pool for 930 and get lots of time chilling including lunch before heading off to airport. I'd be having a drink at the airport, wander round the shops and a couple of proseccos on the flight, Reading my book. Assuming no dc this sounds like a good day.

MsTanyaMcQuoid · 25/02/2026 07:15

Better than a kick up the arse. 🤷‍♀️

justwantthispaintostop · 25/02/2026 07:14

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2026 06:54

I would find it tiring.

I don’t think it’s “normal” to find it tiring or to find it fine. Either is possible. Which is why the DP in question could have checked and said “hey, I can get Monday the 10th off and I’ve spotted these flights, what do you think?”

As a healthy adult, a short flight should not be tiring you to the point of being exhausted the next day.

Yes she will!

For a trip of this length you need carry on only. Minimal toiletries etc.

Two hours at the airport = get there at 3, could probably even stretch it to 3:30 if needs be.

Get up at 7 and you’ve got 8 hours to explore!

ZenNudist · 25/02/2026 07:09

I went on a friend's birthday trip to a Spanish party city. We left Friday morning so got Friday lunch Friday night all day and night Saturday then left early Sunday.(1.5 days) I was really disappointed as the tickets were expensive and I'd agreed to go Thursday night to Sunday afternoon (2.5 days). Anyway- we had a great time and felt like a proper break.

Sometimes short breaks are as good as long.

We have booked 3 nights in a European holiday park by accident as dh got confused booking flights and I meant to book an extra night in a nearby city to extend the holiday as the holiday park only offered 3 nights. I feel OK about it as I reckon the extra day and moving location would have just made the holiday more annoying and tiring.

I have also had a good time flying long haul (ish- new york and Boston) for a relatively short time (8 days including 2.5 days of travel and less than 3 days in each city. It's amazing how you can see a lot in a short space of time. When you travel for longer, you need breaks and downtime that you don't need on a short hop.

It’s almost an ‘extreme day trip’. But, you’ll have all day Sunday and most of Monday. I’d love it, but if you feel that hard done by, let him take someone else.

The plane is going regardless of OP being in row 22 or not.

That’s a total non argument. If we all reduced our flying the plane would not go, or at least there would be less planes so I’m with the PP

op for me it’s too long on a plane for too short a time but if it’s booked and paid for I’d go along. But would prefer 48 hours in Paris or similar with that kind of timeframe.

my friend just did 48 h in GC and loved it.
