To not unroll DHs filthy socks before washing?

This is meant to be light hearted!

DH said the other day that one of his socks was still wet after being in the tumble dryer. Not giving out just a comment.

He takes his socks off balled up and throws them into the washing basket. I've told him loads of times that how they are in the basket is how they go into the machine! A lot of the time they seem un 'un-ball'

He can and does use the washing machine but I do pretty much everyone's to keep on top of it. There are lots of jobs he does too.

DH is a cattle farmer and does a lot of welding/ mechanical work.

AIBU to leave them balled up?

Ughhhh I have this same issue with my husband (a contractor, and we farm too so also fairly gross 😂). I don’t do it on purpose but equally I do not go sorting through ensuring every sock is un-rolled. He sometimes leaves his shirt inside his jumper too, that’s fucking annoying as well 😂 I cut him some slack when it’s busy, because fair enough, he’s coming home in the dark and creeping around trying not to wake anyone but it is one of those things that just makes me so irrationally angry 😂

If you are going to wash them I’d unroll them as you no they are dirty and won’t get cleaned properly. If you don’t want to (which is fair enough) then don’t wash them and let him do it. No need to be petty

Also light-hearted:

My husband PAIRS HIS SOCKS (tucks them together!) before putting them in the laundry basket.

You are not unreasonable. My DH used to unbutton just the minimum buttons in order to pull his formal shirts over his head and into the linen basket. After washing I had to unbutton the shirts to line dry and iron.

He managed to unbutton his own shirts after I washed them and hung them unironed on a hanger in his wardrobe ( buttoned right up to the collar).

How do people even make balls out of socks taking them off?!

TheChosenTwo · 23/02/2026 11:43

I don’t unroll anything or do anything extra. The people I wash clothes for know this and so they put things in the basket when they’re ready for washing. If socks are balled up when they go from the basket into the machine it’s down to the washing gods as to how they come out.

Yes, I have the same "rule" - I have warned others that I don't unravel dirty socks, and if they want them washed properly they need to do it themselves before putting them in the basket. As well as not wanting to touch other people's dirty socks, it can be quite a time consuming task if you have to sort through lots of socks at once, whereas it's a couple of seconds to do each one individually before it goes in the basket.

DS seems to be capable of doing this. DD and DH do not.

Northernparent68 · 23/02/2026 11:41

is he this petty with you

Storynanny1 · 23/02/2026 11:41

haha! leave them balled up to wash and dry! My friend was fed up of unrolling work shirt sleeves so she washed dried and ironed them like it one day - he never put them in the laundry basket rolled up again!

FriedFalafels · 23/02/2026 11:39

My partner does his own washing nowadays. But back when I was PT and did all the household washing, I wouldn’t wash anything that wasn’t washing machine ready - that meant pockets empty, items separated, turned the correct way and un-balled. It remained in his wash basket.

You’re within your rights not to unroll

toomuchfaff · 23/02/2026 11:38

His job is irrelevant; if he wants his socks washing and drying then they are in the basket, unrolled. If thats where you set the bar; the bar is set. You're not responsible for rummaging through dirty washing to unball his socks.
