To not unroll DHs filthy socks before washing?

pontipinemum · 23/02/2026 11:34

This is meant to be light hearted!

DH said the other day that one of his socks was still wet after being in the tumble dryer. Not giving out just a comment.

He takes his socks off balled up and throws them into the washing basket. I've told him loads of times that how they are in the basket is how they go into the machine! A lot of the time they seem un 'un-ball'

He can and does use the washing machine but I do pretty much everyone's to keep on top of it. There are lots of jobs he does too.

DH is a cattle farmer and does a lot of welding/ mechanical work.

AIBU to leave them balled up?

Yep. Balled up socks come out the way they go in.

On another note, does anyone else have a little girl that takes off her leggings, socks and knickers all together and inside out, so the knickers are stuck on the inside and socks stuck in the legs?

Edited

I have a 3yr old son whos boxers, track suit pants and socks are sometimes all still 'stuck' together.

I've never had a problem doing everyone's laundry (back in the day I had DH and three boys at home so it was a bit of a chore) but I always insisted on unballed socks, unrolled sleeves and most importantly a pocket check before clothes went into the laundry basket. And needless to say, if it wasn't in the laundry basket it didn't get washed.

It's much easier now it's just me and DH. DS3 who's still at home does his own.

I don't mind doing it either. It is pretty easy for me since I work from home. Put a wash on before work. Then either hang it or tumble dry it at lunch. I do a wash most days! Between clothes, sheets, towels.

Also light-hearted:

My husband PAIRS HIS SOCKS (tucks them together!) before putting them in the laundry basket.

My DH does this too, I don’t know why, I’ve asked him why, he says he doesn’t know he’s doing it.

I hate socks, washing, drying and pairing up.

is he this petty with you

Nothing petty about it. I trained both my teen DSs that balled up socks go back in the wash basket. The lesson was learned very quickly.

I pair all socks and encourage my family to do the same otherwise I have to rummage round the baskets looking for pairs of socks!

To be clear, dirty socks are paired and put in the laundry basket? Then you separate them to wash?

Oh god, mine too. I refuse to touch them!

MeinKraft · 23/02/2026 12:35

I don’t even wash them let alone unball them, he does his own washing. I was not put on this earth to wash a man’s horrible socks.

Whyarepeople · 23/02/2026 12:25

The thought of unrolling someone else's socks makes me feel sick. I have an aversion to feet though, so I'm extra yuck on that one.

I have two teens and a DH. Everyone in my house does their own laundry so if they want to wash balled up socks that's their own business.

To add I don't want to explain endlessly how our laundry set up works. It just does.

mydudero · 23/02/2026 12:13

Could have written this myself 😬

If I put a wash on and he’s here I have been known to chuck his balled up socks at him to unpick, whilst telling him to stop taking his socks off like a toddler (which is actually a disservice to the toddler because even he knows how to take socks off properly 😂). He also has a hands on job & his work clothes are filthy so I’m not doing it!

Unzipped hoodies in the wash basket are another pet peeve of mine 🙄

How do people even make balls out of socks taking them off?!

I would imagine that they take the socks off and roll them together in a ball.

justpassmethemouse · 23/02/2026 12:11

I have a vegetable net that I put socks in, and then the whole net goes in the wash with the laundry - socks not balled/paired and also not eaten by the washing machine.

I'm having a good laugh at a lot of these.

@skyeisthelimit I have 2 sons they are 3 and 1. I cannot wait for the day I no longer need to turn their clothes the right way around!

DD is 17, so you could have a long wait Grin.

GiantTeddyIsTired · 23/02/2026 12:08

Everything goes into the washing machine straight from the basket - buggered if I'm going to sort anything more than maybe splitting PE Kit from the rest so I don't waste hygiene wash (and TBH, that's in bags, so already largely split apart).

In fact, if things are left in pockets, I'm going to come and have a go at you for blocking up the washing machine filter.

I have mentioned many times that if socks are balled up, they don't wash or dry properly. Sometimes eldest still balls them. That's his lookout.

On the other hand, I don't care that he leaves his shirts buttoned up - doesn't take me any more or less time to iron a buttoned up shirt. (I iron because he's dyspraxic and will burn hiimself/take forever and that's not a battle he needs to take on)

plasbks · 23/02/2026 12:03

yabu
if i'm putting washing in, I'll make sure it's done properly

I do all laundry preparation including unrolling, checking pockets etc. However it’s just how we do this here - laundry is my domain but e.g I don’t do any gardening jobs. So it depends how you feel about it - if you don’t like it I won’t unball.

How do people even make balls out of socks taking them off?!

If you put your finger under the cuff of the sock and pull down. It sort of rolls up as it comes off.

YANBU - DD takes off her leggings with her socks in and chucks them in the wash. I wash and dry them like that. I asked her repeatedly to not do it and then gave up. They don't even wash properly like it though.

I also fold the leggings inside out and put them in the laundry basket. She can turn them the right way round herself if she can't be bothered before they go in the wash.

I am not her servant.

Maybe once she is at Uni and doing her own washing all the time, she will change her ways.

We don't pair socks, we mostly buy black ones, but we just grab 2 socks from the drawer and wear them.

thenightsky · 23/02/2026 11:59

I had this with DH when we first got married. Balled socks and rolled up shirt sleeves. I asked him a few times to not do this and he managed it for a few days, then slipped back. So I washed them as they went into the basket. He doesn't do it any more.

Edited to add that tissues left in pockets pisses me off more than words can say. Angry

gannett · 23/02/2026 11:54

I chuck DP's socks into the washing machine balled up. Ditto shirts with rolled-up sleeves. They come out how they come out. He's free to unball them himself if he's not happy with the results.

I check all pockets though, because anything untoward going in the washing machine will just make my life harder (and also I'm as likely to have left tissues or a pen or a tenner in my pockets as DP).

KevinsSignatureShortdeads · 23/02/2026 11:50

I absolutely wouldn’t be unballing them. If he can’t be bothered to do it, why should you? It’s gross to have unnecessary contact with another person’s socks.

I don’t see this as petty at all; he is being lazy in the first instance.

But she said he can and does do laundry, she just chooses to do it more to speed it up, she could easily just not wash them and have even less contact with his socks. Choosing to do them but making a point he’s been lazy, is a tad petty
