Embarrassed myself at friends wedding.

I went to a friends wedding a month ago. Had too much to drink, and fell asleep in the toilets. I was found by one of the bridesmaids who helped me to my room. The next day, everyone was joking about it.

I am mortified. I have 3 children and im 40 years old. I feel so much shame for getting myself in this state. It keeps popping into my head and I feel that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach! What an embarrassment I am.

I don’t really know what I’m hoping to get out of this post, but I am alone with my thoughts and feeling awful about this whole thing. I socialise with this extended group every 6 months or so, and I’ll be seeing them again soon, and I just don’t want to go. My friends parents all know etc. Will I ever not feel so awful about this???

You’re being way too hard on yourself. So you fell asleep. You weren’t in charge of young kids, I assume?

You didn’t strip during the speeches, you don’t shag anyone, you didn’t start a fight… There are many, many worse things you could have done.

What makes you feel embarrassed so long after? Sounds like you have high standards for yourself. What would you say to a friend if they told you this story?

Followthesunshine · 22/02/2026 12:36

I understand why you are feeling embarrassed but honestly everyone else will just think it's funny. There are much worse things you could have done. Life is for living - you had a good time and sometimes we all drink too much but you didn't have a fight, cheat, throw up, take over the dance floor or do any number of things that are much worse, falling asleep is quite tame really

JustCabbaggeLooking · 22/02/2026 12:36

Have you posted about this before, OP?

Whats behind it is feeling like a failure and an embarrassment to my children. What sort of a mother does that???

Dear me. What ridiculous standards you have for yourself. Do you find that you have those standards for others too?

pouletvous · 22/02/2026 12:36

I think the bridesmaid was unfair to tell everyone and make it a joke . How mean!

Whydidyougothere · 22/02/2026 12:35

I would really not judge you for this at all! Whether you were 20/40/60, a mother of 1 or 10.
Honestly I'd never make anyone feel embarrassed of this, I'd joke with a close friend but only if it was something they also found funny. If they didn't I'd never mention it again.

pouletvous · 22/02/2026 12:35

Do you think you have a drinking problem? Is that what is bothering you here? Do you have form for this type of behaviour?

i really wouldn’t blame a mum of three kids getting a bit drunk at a wedding. I also tend to fall asleep when ive over indulged. I once fel asleep slumped at a bar

user6386297154 · 22/02/2026 12:35

Sounds a bit of a tame wedding if the only excitement was a 40 something having one too many and falling asleep! Just laugh along - they’ll soon get bored.

Many mothers have got drunk and embarrassed themselves. I'm one of them. I can laugh about it.
Do you naturally hold yourself to very high standards or does someone in your life have very high expectations of you?

BruisedNeckMeat · 22/02/2026 12:34

Yeah it’s not bad as far as wedding drunkenness goes.

You probably won’t feel better until
you've seen the group of friends though so do try and go along, style it out and be breezy!

MiniCoopers · 22/02/2026 12:33

You’re going to have to style this one out. ‘Yep horrendous, what a numpty I was, great day thought wasn’t it.’ Laugh and move it on. You might need to do that a few times but then it’s done and dusted

Pettifogg · 22/02/2026 12:04

This is not something to be ashamed of. Do go to the next meet up - make a joke about it yourself - when you pop to the loo, tell them you're just off for forty winks. Honestly, it's nothing.

That’s the sort of thing I’d do….laugh at myself and get it over with!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 22/02/2026 12:32

Goodness, when compared with some of the shenanigans reported on this site, that is NOTHING, OP! You very likely fell asleep because 1. you were tired and 2. you're not used to drinking.

Stop beating yourself up.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 22/02/2026 12:30

Most of us have had the odd 'blow out' as I like to call it where we simply have just drank too much, feel deeply embarrassed, have the hangover from hell, promise we will never do it again and then history repeats itself 😂. Don't be so hard on yourself OP. You've 3 kids, you're probably knackered and the drink went straight to your head.

A mother that is exhausted from running around after her kids all the time who went out, had some drinks, fun and couldn’t hack the pace simply falling asleep in the toilet; that’s who!
give yourself some grace, you weren’t horrible to anyone, you didn’t put your kids in danger, you weren’t explicit, you simply fell asleep drunk and tired after having enjoyed your day out at a wedding!

Mum23plusC · 22/02/2026 12:29

If they say something this time you meet I'd brazen it out with humour. Think of some comeback lines for what could possibly be said to you. At least you didn't fall asleep during the speeches!!! If it continues the next time, tell them its old news now, and cant believe they'd still be going on about it.

EmeraldGlade · 22/02/2026 12:29

I was expecting this to be much worse, all you did was fall asleep! Not dance topless on the bar. It's not that bad x

Londonlife999 · 22/02/2026 12:29

You're being way too hard on yourself OP, I get it, I'd probably do the same (because I can be too hard on myself too) but I'd be telling a friend in all sincerity to not worry!

I hope you get to the point soon that you can, if not laugh about it, at least not feel terrible. You did nothing wrong!!

BillieWiper · 22/02/2026 12:28

That's not that bad really. You were tired/tipsy. Someone found you and took you to your room and you were safe. You didn't have a fight or piss yourself or anything? It wasn't like loads of people saw you?

Just join in with the laughter about it. Nobody's going to hold it against you. If they do then they're twats.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/02/2026 12:27

You went to a Wedding and got rat arsed it’s not end of the flippin world. You’re most certainly not the first and you most certainly won’t be the last.

Uricon2 · 22/02/2026 12:27

Honestly, as PPs have rightly said, if bad behaviour at weddings was a continuum, yours would barely register. People were ragging you about it to your face because it wasn't terrible.

lastlonelygrape · 22/02/2026 12:27

I'm not a drinker and I do privately judge people who do stupid things while drunk, and even I think falling asleep at a wedding after drinking too much is mild and not worth worrying about. Especially if your children were in good hands when this happened and you only 'let loose' when you know they are safe and cared for, that's your own business and nothing to lose sleep over. If you're worried about accidentally drinking more than you intend, now you know to keep closer track of what you're drinking and stop after a certain point. It's only if you can't make yourself limit your drinking that I'd be worried and look for help, but it doesn't sound like that's the case here at all, so give yourself a break. It's not that bad!

My old boss (also a mother of three) got so drunk at our work Xmas do one year she gave everyone an individual lap dance then fell over, broke her leg and went off in an ambulance. Honestly, people will have seen far worse.

😆😆😆

Delphiniumandlupins · 22/02/2026 12:17

Ach, blame it on lack of sleep rather than alcohol. You might get some teasing but hopefully most people were focused on the happy couple. It's definitely not the worst thing I have heard of happening in the toilets at a wedding! Just remember that your tolerance for alcohol drops if you don't drink regularly.

Brightlittlecanary · 22/02/2026 12:17

Was that all that happened, you fell asleep in the loo? Was there more to it, like were you stumbling and incoherent before or after?
