To encourage DH to keep his season ticket?

Every year we have the same conversation. He's not sure he wants to renew his season ticket (Premier League team he supports) due to feeling bad about the cost essentially.

We aren't super flush but can afford it even if he spreads the payments across the year. Yes we'd always find something else to spend it on but we aren't going without!

He doesn't go out a lot, doesn't have other hobbies etc. We spend most weekends together and if he gets the chance he takes DD along with him.

I think it's nice to have something he enjoys doing, i don't see why he wouldn't want to keep it? If he gives it up then he will never get the chance back again.

You're lovely OP!! so many on here would be moaning about it.

At my club if we can't go to a match (and we have to go to at least 6 per season, 3 in the first half and 3 in the second or we are blocked from renewing) you can put the seat up for sale in the ticket resale system.

Would that be an option for your DH if he is worried about the cost? or do a ticket share with someone (you have to be careful, friends of mine came to blows about who was going to the derby)

Thanks!

He has done a ticket share in the past but you're right it was more hassle than it was worth so he went back to buying it outright himself.

Can he easily sell the tickets? We sell
ours when we can’t go on the club website and sell 90% of the time so I mind the cost less.

Sometimes he does but more likely to swap between the 2 others that he goes with. Hence why he can sometimes take DD.

Only asking as we had the annual conversation this morning.

He loves his team but wouldn't say obsessed. If we have an event that clashes he won't go. I also support a different team and he will take me along to that match (though I have to stay quiet!).

I suppose the question is, is it weird to encourage him to spend quite a lot of money on a hobby that is purely spectator! As I said we arent super rich and I've had a few friends surprised that I 'let' him spend so much money on himself when I don't have the equivalent.

I meet friends for coffee or dinner more than he does though so I'm not bothered.

Although raising kids with a football obsessive can be hard work

I've re-read the OP and I can't see any mention of him being football obsessive?

Tell him to keep it. My partner has season tickets to a club and goes to every game possible and I tell him too. I love the fact he has a hobby and would hate if he was boring and just sat at home. I can’t wait for him to take our future kids with him so I get a break too.

Fidgety31 · 21/02/2026 13:46

Why is it something that is bothering you if it doesn’t cause any issues ?
what a strange post - are you just bored and have nothing else to think about ?!

QPZM · 21/02/2026 13:43

I don't know why you're asking is really OP?

He knows you're happy with it and he'll either choose to keep it or not.

As someone who’d consider donating actual body parts for a ST I am biased, so I’d say no, don’t give it up. Especially if DD goes as it’s a lovely way to spend time together. It’s also important he has a hobby outside the home. He does need to go to enough matches to keep it though as many teams have a limit on how many transfers you can make before they withdraw the ST. If you can afford it, and he uses it, keep it.
