To encourage DH to keep his season ticket?

Every year we have the same conversation. He's not sure he wants to renew his season ticket (Premier League team he supports) due to feeling bad about the cost essentially.

We aren't super flush but can afford it even if he spreads the payments across the year. Yes we'd always find something else to spend it on but we aren't going without!

He doesn't go out a lot, doesn't have other hobbies etc. We spend most weekends together and if he gets the chance he takes DD along with him.

I think it's nice to have something he enjoys doing, i don't see why he wouldn't want to keep it? If he gives it up then he will never get the chance back again.

Of course he should keep it, OP.
And may I say how lovely to read on here about a woman who actually wants her partner to have a hobby? I'm female, and I think my husband's hobbies are really important, but far too many women seem to think that men should never have any time to themselves. We all need stuff just for us!

Exactly how I feel. He always puts me first and I try to do the same. Life is miserable if we don't have things we enjoy and get excited about.

We've had a pretty tough couple of years with one thing and another so I'm trying to persuade him to hold on to some fun/ down time.

If he gives it up I think he'll regret it as won't be able to just reinstate it. It's the Premier League and the waiting lists can be huge depending on team.

I have not said that though (Neither has he).

then i wasn't addressing you? other PP have literally said they are swithering about keeping a season ticket because their club may go down (or that their DH was swithering)

I'm afraid i am very much of the "if you don't want to go when they're not in the PL, let someone else have the season ticket".

I have not said that though (Neither has he).

Everyone should have something they do that gives them joy. It doesn't sound like he's taking the piss and you aren't bothered so other people need to keep their breaks out.

its his hobby he enjoys it and your dd gets to go sometimes too. Maybe he’s a bit disheartened if they may go down but deep down if he loves going and loves the club he should keep it. People wait ages for the chance. My partner made the mistake and regretted it immediately. People will suddenly get uppity because it’s football but essentially if it’s his only hobby he does and you’re happy then sounds great he keeps it going. And I’m sure even if they go down he’ll still supporting. (Partners team are almost certainly going down from PL this season 🤦‍♀️)

If you can afford it, it's not so bad when you take into account he doesn't go out boozing regularly - you could easily spend the monthly cost on a night or two out a month these days, or have any expensive hobbies. I would encourage him to keep it.

Nickyknackered · 22/02/2026 14:00

I think its £1200/1300. Upper tier and good view, most importantly, exit near the train station! Just for PL games and first refusal for other games (paying extra which he doesn't do unless it was a semi/ final type game)

OP posts:
MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 22/02/2026 13:27

That's for 19 league games and first 5 European and/or FA Cup games. Any Carabao Cup games or other cup games over the first 5 you pay extra for.

JingsMahBucket · 21/02/2026 17:08

How much do season tickets cost anyway? I guess it varies by the (success) level of the team, right?

Top premier league side, £1400 per season. 20% discount for those under 24. And that's the cheapest season ticket, lower tier by the corner flag.

Paramaribo2025 · 22/02/2026 13:12

Life is short.
I would let it flow.

My DH is also thinking about giving it up. We are in the premiership but likely to go down (again) although he says every year hes not renewing. I hope not because I like my peaceful Saturday afternoons 🤣🤣

it is a bit rubbish to only support them when in the PL. He should give it up for someone who cares.

I will follow my team down to the depths of amateur sunday league, if that's where football takes them.

caringcarer · 21/02/2026 17:30

I know 2 brothers who ticket share. They both work shifts but opposite ones so one of them can go most weeks and if none can go they sell ticket through club and money goes into pot to put towards next year's ticket. They occasionally buy an additional ticket and go together. It seems to work well for them.

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 21/02/2026 14:42

Keep it for as long as possible!

I had a season ticket at a top premier league side for nearly 50 years. It was originally bought for me by my Mum and Dad as a birthday and Christmas present each year. When I started working I paid for it myself. I have now transferred it into my sons name.

In the long run, clubs (well the top premier league ones anyway), would love to get rid of season ticket holders and sell tickets on a match by match basis. This would get the overseas football tourists coming over to watch a match, go into the club store and buy half a dozen bags of replica kits and souvenirs at vastly inflated prices. It's a matter of time before Mr/Mrs Average will be priced out.

Also this!

I definitely think he'll regret it. They aren't doing great at the moment and with train tickets and food and a pint or two, it all adds up to a pricy day to watch them lose. But that's a short term issue (I personally think).

Swiftie1878 · 21/02/2026 14:11

I’m on a wait list for a season ticket. He should definitely keep it. He’ll regret giving it up if he does!!

Coconutter24 · 21/02/2026 14:10

I wouldn’t ’encourage’ him to keep it but if he is asking for an opinion I’d say I don’t mind that he spends the money on the ticket and have no issues with him going out to games. He’s a grown man he can decide if he wants to renew the ticket or not

Pedallleur · 21/02/2026 14:08

If that's his only vice and doesn't go crazy with days out and you are happy then let him keep it

somanychristmaslights · 21/02/2026 14:08

Life is too short. If it’s something he enjoys, you can afford and you’re happy too, then win win all round! DH sounds lovely and considerate.

Brefugee · 21/02/2026 14:07

i think it's great that he sometimes takes DD. Deffo he needs to keep it (mind you... which team...)
