To encourage DH to keep his season ticket?

Every year we have the same conversation. He's not sure he wants to renew his season ticket (Premier League team he supports) due to feeling bad about the cost essentially.

We aren't super flush but can afford it even if he spreads the payments across the year. Yes we'd always find something else to spend it on but we aren't going without!

He doesn't go out a lot, doesn't have other hobbies etc. We spend most weekends together and if he gets the chance he takes DD along with him.

I think it's nice to have something he enjoys doing, i don't see why he wouldn't want to keep it? If he gives it up then he will never get the chance back again.

i would not nor would my DH give up season tickets! We support different premier league teams and DS1 goes with him and DS2 comes with me! We let them choose who they were going to follow!!

it takes up a lot of time, it’s expensive but we love it. And especially as he can take DD!! I went to my first match in 1994 with my dad, I can remember the score; the goal scores, the walk the game etc. I love having this with my dad

I think this is the route I will push. I think it's great that he spends time with her and something they do together, hopefully for a long time.

He's a Tottenham fan then! 😂

Haha nope

Hmmm.

Exit near a train station is not much to work with.

West Ham a good guess.
I'm guessing Leeds...

We're Burnley fans so ruled Burnley out, and Leeds' stadium isn't that close to a train station IMO-we live over this way.

Obviously which team OP's DH supports doesn't at all matter, but the guessing game is fun!

We're having fun trying to guess which team here-West Ham?

Not West Ham!

Weirdly they don't play often at Saturday 3pm because they are on TV a fair bit. So there's also the inconvenient kick off times!

its his hobby he enjoys it and your dd gets to go sometimes too. Maybe he’s a bit disheartened if they may go down but deep down if he loves going and loves the club he should keep it. People wait ages for the chance. My partner made the mistake and regretted it immediately. People will suddenly get uppity because it’s football but essentially if it’s his only hobby he does and you’re happy then sounds great he keeps it going. And I’m sure even if they go down he’ll still supporting. (Partners team are almost certainly going down from PL this season 🤦‍♀️)

He's a Tottenham fan then! 😂

I think its £1200/1300. Upper tier and good view, most importantly, exit near the train station! Just for PL games and first refusal for other games (paying extra which he doesn't do unless it was a semi/ final type game)

Sounds like you like him being out the house on a saturday.

Nothing wrong in that

itsthetea · 23/02/2026 11:50

It’s good that he asks rather than takes for granted

Not cheap no but I am telling the truth! Some teams are more expensive than others.

I believe you! Our season tickets are £1200 each and pretty good seats but you’d have to prise them out of my DH’s cold dead hand to stop him going. Just curious what team it is.

Craftysue · 23/02/2026 10:45

I sometimes cringe at the cost of mine but I've enjoyed it for many years ( ups and downs) and I don't spend a lot on other things. If he does give it up he might find it difficult to get another one as most premier league teams have long waiting lists

Although raising kids with a football obsessive can be hard work

He's clearly a not a football obsessive if he's considered giving up his season ticket. What a weird thing to say.

@Nickyknackered very interested in what team-

those aren't cheap tickets.

do you mind saying??

I’ve had my season ticket for years, supported my team briefly in the prem , mostly in the championship and through a relegation. Hope your Dh renews his and continues to enjoy his football .

YippyKiYay · 23/02/2026 00:01

Could you frame it as it's a family gift to him (Xmas, birthday, anniversary) so that he doesn't feel bad about it. Seems like he gets a lot of enjoyment and your DD involved, worth holding on to
Hobbies and friends are important at all stages of life

Nickyknackered · 21/02/2026 14:03

Only asking as we had the annual conversation this morning.

He loves his team but wouldn't say obsessed. If we have an event that clashes he won't go. I also support a different team and he will take me along to that match (though I have to stay quiet!).

I suppose the question is, is it weird to encourage him to spend quite a lot of money on a hobby that is purely spectator! As I said we arent super rich and I've had a few friends surprised that I 'let' him spend so much money on himself when I don't have the equivalent.

I meet friends for coffee or dinner more than he does though so I'm not bothered.

If he's a Spurs supporter I understand his hesitation.

But keep the season ticket, he may never be able to get one again

That’s a pretty standard price tbh.
I’m on the wait list for Everton (hardly a top tier, European football team), but those prices correlate.

Yes, he does. He has his own hobby that she supports.

I hope he keeps it. I have a friend who has a PL season ticket. Her husband buys it for her and looks after their daughters when she goes to matches.

Brefugee · 22/02/2026 18:17

then i wasn't addressing you? other PP have literally said they are swithering about keeping a season ticket because their club may go down (or that their DH was swithering)

Ok! Have a good evening
