Area gone to shit, feel forced to move 😪

I've lived in the same London suburb all my life. Until just a few short years ago it was a very nice area, and we thought we'd likely stay for ever, perhaps downsizing when the DC left home. We've spent a lot of time and money improving and extending our home over the years and it's perfect for us, just the way we want it, so would not wish to leave it for a few years yet.

However, the area has been going downhill at an alarming rate over the last 3 or 4 years to the point that we find we now absolutely hate it and want to get out - overcrowded, horrendous traffic, driving & road rage, unpleasant, rude people, lots of crime and antisocial behaviour. HMOs springing up all over, including one at the end of the street, most of which contain single, foreign men, not families. We're overrun with food delivery bike riders (many of whom live in the HMOS) who congregate in the high street, leering at women & young girls and spit disgusting red tobacco on the pavement. The area looks increasingly run down, fly tipping and a general lack of care. It has long been fairly multi cultural (no problem with that at all) but we're now finding that as white british people we are fast becoming a minority, and frequently encounter people who cannot speak any English. I'm sure some will accuse me of being racist but I absolutely am not, I'm just sad at what has happened to our once lovely area and, no, I'm not blaming immigration for all of it, although it's clearly a factor.

I know many areas are the same but there are plenty that are not - I only have to compare our Community Facebook page which is full of posts complaining of the above issues to that of the area we're thinking of going to which is completely different.

We've accepted we now need to move several years before we are ready but I feel so sad and angry about it. Several friends have already moved and others are considering it for the same reasons. The DC are happy for us to move as they hate it too - one at uni, the other working & considering buying their own place, not round here!

Poverty doesn't cause men to spit red tobacco in the street while leering at women. And we've never been richer - people lived in far more poverty in ie the 1920s without there being the problems described by the OP

Agree. The problem is that there is an enormous imbalance in the number of people that don't have any respect for others or where they live anymore.

There have always been dispectful scumbags but now they're starting to outnumber decent people and the effects of their actions is getting more and more visible.

So many threads like this, a few variations on the theme, and all in the week leading up to a by-election which Reform are hoping to win. I wonder what the link might be? 🤔

To state the blindingly obvious, you don’t have a race issue OP, it’s a poverty issue.

The number of people (yes including white people) living in poverty has grown and is growing. Housing costs are a major cause of this. They’re also a major cause of Councils not having funds to address fly tipping, maintain services etc because they’re having to fund temp accommodation for families made homeless by landlords racking up rents ‘to reflect market value’.

As another poster said - where did we think treating housing as an investment vehicle would end?

Over 5% unemployment (and that figure is higher for younger people).

It will get worse when the next generation are still renting/paying crippling mortgages aged 70.

Poverty doesn't cause men to spit red tobacco in the street while leering at women. And we've never been richer - people lived in far more poverty in ie the 1920s without there being the problems described by the OP

Oh yes, it's going to be so great when Reform get into power and introduce their own version of ICE to keep our streets pearly white. 🙄

You don’t support the removal of illegal immigrants?

Nobody has taken my name or knocked on my door to discuss the topic of Jewishness.

I only found out one of my best friends was Jewish after I'd flown to L.A. for her wedding and she told me some of her family wouldn't attend because it was Rosh Hashanna (sp?)

It wouldn't occur to me to be anti-Semitic. Nobody has ever suggested it to me as an ideology.

Because you've not experienced anti-Semitism, even though you're not Jewish, you don't think it exists?

The only reason it feels coordinated is because the same problem is cropping up all over.

I’m not convinced they will ever govern, but at least a healthy Reform party will keep Labour under pressure to do what the vast majority of British people want, which is to reduce poor quality immigration to zero.

Doesn't anyone else think this environmental change is to do with growing inequalities? The rich are getting richer - have you not noticed the cheaply built new blocks of flats are for rent tather than sale? The super-rich (these blocks are often owned by bans and financial services companies) exploiting those unable to afford to buy. The rise in take-aways - the low paid are working two jobs and have no time to shop or cook. Immigrants are a scape-goat. The wealthy Reform members and sponsors are making you poorer and more desperate by fleecing you.

Just looked this up and banks own almost no blocks of flats in the UK. Only Lloyds has gone into property ownership on any meaningful scale, and even then it only owns about 7,500 flats altogether in the UK

If there is loads of dog poo everywhere too then it sounds exactly like where I live ! (Harrow)

Oh yes, dog poo, and human poo - I kid you not! Yep, I know Harrow, & yes very similar. Harrow is slightly worse than where I am I think, but catching up fast!

YANBU OP.

It's very boring people jumping on here squawking about racism when you're just pointing out facts and you have to be blind not to have seen the general decline of the UK.

Littering, respect for others, anti social behaviour. Yes it all existed before but it seems to have sky rocketed in the last few years. It really is a scary decline.

My mum's road for eg, approx 75% privately owned has rapidly gone downhill in the last few years. I remember it from 35/40 years ago when I grew up there and you'd hardly believe it was the same road. It used to be leafy, quiet and safe for us all to play out. I'd say the ratio of council tenants Vs private owners is about the same as it was then but the behaviour and respect from the council tenants has nose dived (they're all different families there now).

The police were NEVER up that road before and now they're there weekly. Rubbish everywhere, screaming, drinking and drug use and total disprect for anyone or where they live.

I will add that the scum that have destroyed that particular area are all white British.

I honestly despair for this country. I can't think of one thing that is better than it was 20 years ago. Work/life ratio, state of the roads, simply trying to drive around the country or park your car, public transport, shit appliances that don't last more than a couple of years, the state of the NHS, schools. And on and on. Everything is worse 😢

And yet to even voice this is asking for trouble. Sad times when people can't have thoughts or feelings

Way back in the 1970s, when I was a child, we were " allowed" to refer to Pakistani people as such- until "Pakistani" was shortened and used as a term of abuse. Thereafter, Pakistanis became known as Asians, usually.

Until the 1970s, or 1980s, "Asians" were Chinese and Japanese.

I'm assuming you're either very young,or an immigrant yourself.
Otherwise, you're being ridiculous.

I am not very young but you are clearly not keeping up with the times if you think that what went in the '70s or 80s' is appropriate today.

Hum, let's see what google says:

Asians are individuals with heritage tracing to any of the diverse ethnic, national, or racial groups within the continent of Asia, which is broadly divided into East, Southeast, South, Central, and Western regions. This diverse population includes over 60% of the world's population, with distinct cultural, linguistic, and regional identities often simplified into regional groupings.

But they are all good people in the neighborhood under discussion.

Or is this what is meant?

In the UK, "Asian" often refers to people from South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), while in the US, it commonly refers to East and Southeast Asian descent (China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, etc.).

Then I am happy to hear that the Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi community in that neighborhood is living together happily (well, apart from the white drug dealers)

Disclaimer: I have way more foreign (born) friends/family than white British.

HMOs are the housing answer we deserve as a nation to kicking the problems of housing down the road for decades.

We all want to sell our property for the highest possible price , but we don’t care to whom or what they do with it.

We don’t want anyone to build near us in case it devalues our “nest egg”

We can’t bring ourselves to actually challenge politicians on the issue, so we just hope we get the most each time we sell, and try and move away from reality.

Britain deserves what it’s currently going through. We are the children of Thatcher’s poisonous attempt to buy an entire generation of votes.

Mass migration didn't start until the late 1990s

I think you are massively misinterpreting my intentions here.

I am not Jewish. I am saying that I have lived 60 years without being affected by anyone's Jewishness and that being antisemitic is a waste of energy, brainpower and time. I'm saying I just don't get it.

You can protest as much as you like - I simply have nothing against Jews 🤷🏻

Have been having exactly the same conversation with family today. We live in a London suburb (less than 20 miles from the city centre) and the changes are identical. It's not pleasant living here anymore

London has always been made up of transient communities .. from French Huguenots, through the Irish, East Asian, West Indian moments if the 20th Century, to Eastern Europeans of the 21st Century .. people immigrating into a country will move to a city, because that’s where they will find work / housing / other people from the same community.

The ones you are talking about are working (good for them) - when I lived in a HMO as a student, we were all about partying & late nights, we must have been awful neighbours.

London isn’t the rest of the country .. at the last census the bit if the country I am in is 99% white - we have issues with very much home grown crime. A Sex Gang was recently prosecuted abd jailed, all white men.

That’s because the decent ones moved out already (whoever could), the rest is avoiding the town centre.
I’ve seen this happen, too.

Are you Jewish @Isittimeformynapyet?
You can't be if you believe that 'you can live an entire lifetime without Judaism affecting you whatsoever'.
Can you not have empathy towards those who ARE affected by Jew hatred on a day basis?

Does that include people feeling intimidated by loitering groups of men?

Yes. I literally meant everyone.
I was including the OP.
Also, I really would like to know if anyone has alternative suggestions for housing people who can't afford to buy or rent a flat or house?
Im autistic, not being disingenuous.

Plinketyplonks · 21/02/2026 13:02

I think people must be able to talk about their areas changing. On Mumsnet in the past I’ve noticed people immediately get called racist for bringing it up. But I feel if people can’t discuss it they’ll get pushed into the arms of Reform or worse. We used to have some issues in our area of east London with Algerian men at street cafes leering and cat calling to women walking past at night. Some used to take a longer route home to avoid it. Of course no one was saying ‘all Algerian men do this’ etc. in the end the police cracked down on it. I also remember a problem in our area where people resident in HMO seemed to be locked out during the day. No idea what that was about. But of course they had no option but to roam around during the day, drinking in the parks and as no toilet facilities (budget cuts) unfortunately having to go to the toilet behind a bush etc.
