…to suggest that it’s time the Royal family stands on its own feet and stops taking money from the public purse?

The Royal family owns and has access to lots of money, land and property. So is it right that they should to take any more money away from us?

All taxes from anywhere in the world should be given directly to the RF.

Camilla should become the first female Pope.

Andrew's shoelaces could be cut up and sold as relics. Remember he suffered for your sins.

I believe their public service role being good to society. So no I don’t believe they should be abolished. I actually think Wills and Kate are very positive role models. I think we should keep our traditions alive and not toss them out for progression. You won’t see an ounce of that money they receive. That’s the reality.

I agree with the last bit of your post. We won't see an ounce of any money that they receive, if they were got rid off. Shame, though.

The R F contributes to public life through charity work, economic impact and international affairs

Members of the RF support hundreds of charities, helping raise awareness and funding. Charles founded The Prince's Trust, which has supported over a million young people into work and education.

Royal residences such as buckingham palace and windsor castle attract millions of visitors, contributing significantly to tourism and the wider economy. Internationally, the RF also plays a diplomatic role, representing the UK abroad. Let’s remember King Charles and his amazing intervention with the Trump and Starmer breakdown.

I imagine that they’ve bought so much love and support on their visits. They visit hospitals, dying children and the needy. Normal celebrities aren’t known for doing that, these are selfless acts and they need recognising using as such.

They could continue to do these things without our money. Hand the castles over to the National Trust, pay them a small payment from that if we have to.

I volunteer, why shouldn’t they?

Is this more satire?!

Clearly I struck a nerve!

😂😂😂😂😂😂

😆 Not at all!

It’s a sweet way of projecting and if that makes you feel better, have it boo.

Partridgs · 20/02/2026 19:26

We get the revenue from the crown estates, they get the sovereign grant. It's a financially beneficial system for the tax payer. Whether they are good people, moral, corrupt or an old relic is another question.

The same could be send about your points an the lack of substance you are brining to the arguement so yeah I think you should leave it

You missed my point. Doctors and nurses actually, physically, work. They don't just "attend "...they work..bloody hard and very long hours.

My job isn't physical. I turn up, do a job and get paid for it. Isn’t that what the RF do?

UnhappyHobbit · 20/02/2026 19:20

waterbobble · 20/02/2026 19:06

No the point is it’s a nonsensical analogy &
if you can’t understand that I’m not sure what else there is to be said.

Baital · 20/02/2026 19:19

There's no good argument for establishing a hereditary head of state.

But OTOH the example of elected heads of state isn't great either.

There seems to be more accountability in the UK (hereditary) than the USA (elected) right now for abuse of process and individual criminality

Oh yeah..fair play. That's quite an achievement to be fair

Exactly, and they do it so they get paid. They might also do it for altruistic reasons and because they care, but I doubt many would do it for free. People work to get money, that’s what jobs are for. Ludicrous that the other poster thinks the royals turn up at hospitals purely out of the goodness of their hearts. I wonder how selfless they’d be if the money was cut off.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 20/02/2026 19:12

Ihateboris · 20/02/2026 17:26

So what do they actually DO?

They made pegging mainstream

waterbobble · 20/02/2026 19:12

The Royal family do charity work because they need to remain relevant & visible & they need good press.

Many billionaires are philanthropists, it’s not driven by altruism.

By a mile

canuckup · 20/02/2026 19:07

Er, yes.

What do these people (and there are many?) actually do???

Ihateboris · 20/02/2026 19:07

UnhappyHobbit · 20/02/2026 19:02

You have missed my point. If my original opinion of the royal family working selflessly for charities is to be argued that they can’t be selfless because they’re being paid for it, then does the same argument apply for doctors and nurses? And perhaps all paid charity workers?

Well yes, they're not going to do it for free are they? Many doctors, in fact, have god complexes, a lot like some of the royals.

Can I please request that my £1.29 goes to the NHS, police. ...and to fix the fucking potholes? Ta very much in advance

A bit like the tax on private schools going to fund those extra teachers?

That money will just disappear into the bureaucracy never to be seen again….

LondonLass61 · 20/02/2026 19:02

I used to like the pomp and circumstance but I and many older people now see through them. I have a grandchild and I hate that they will pay for George, Charlotte and Louis just like I, my parents and grandparents have paid all our lives towards their ancestors. They perpetuate the rotten class system in this country.
Prince Philip’s and Charles’ shenanigans, sealed wills when they die, the exemption from environmental and equality laws (and others) but above all the 12 million paid out to protect AMW. Where was the honour, integrity and duty there?
In addition, they have had the best education that money can buy but have not cured cancer, solved homelessness or shown any strategic leadership but they do make sure that their names are attached to projects. W and K seem to pop up every now and again just before they go on another holiday. None of them has shown any leadership and they certainly do not run the country. They are rinsing the country.

waterbobble · 20/02/2026 19:01

If there’s no proof that they bring in more than they ‘cost’, they by logic the reverse must be true: there’s no proof they cost more than they bring in.

What we do know is that there is a complete lack of transparency around Royal finances. What is state wealth or family money? Why the exemption from the Freedom of information act? A lack of transparency normally means it benefits the person wanting the secrecy….

I want my 1.29 back please. Those who love the RF can pay my share and/or get a crowdfunder going. Suspect people will not be so keen on that

The royal family costs £1.29 per person per year. Is that really that bad?

That’s over £50 million a year then. The fact that’s “only” £1.29 per person is irrelevant, in total it’s a huge amount of money that could be put to better use elsewhere. I’d think the same if it was 1p or £1000 per person a year.
