…to suggest that it’s time the Royal family stands on its own feet and stops taking money from the public purse?

The Royal family owns and has access to lots of money, land and property. So is it right that they should to take any more money away from us?

I also don't buy this argument they are good role models, provide stability or this soft power argument.

A very recent example of the Monarchy's soft power, was the recent show of strength when Mark Carney needed to square up to Trump about his threat to make Canada the 51st US state. Wheeled in his Majesty the King who reminded the POTUS that as Head of the Commonwealth, over his dead body would that happen. Cue some furious back-pedalling and slumping off with his tail between his legs. I expect Trump didn't even think about the fact that Canada is in the Commonwealth, and ummm.... who's the Head of the Commonwealth- ahh yes.....the penny drops - his geopolitical knowledge is woefully inadequate.

The Monarchy is like an insurance policy, nobody wants to pay the premium but when the shit hits the fan they sure are glad they did.

re William and Kate's children, they've had the most benign, protected childhood possible, particularly with the relative normality of Kate's side of the family. The idea that they will have MH complexities from their childhood so far is risible.

The same Mark Carney that said attacked King Charles silence over the issue and said Britain issuing a second state visit to Trump was undermining his own government agenda of projecting a united front on the issue? I can't see I've see any reports where King Charles's told Trump "over my dead body"

The Monarchy are apolitical and not even allowed to vote. The idea that King Charles had a go at Trump personally over the issue is laughable.

Canada's Carney attacks King Charles for silence over Trump's annexation threats

Since taking office in January, Trump has repeatedly said he wants Canada to become the 51st U.S. state, a suggestion that has angered Canadians and buoyed Carney's popularity.

Im half inclined to believe some of those writing are non native English speakers if you look.at the responce time from the posts bits of this have been coordinated. Also theres 1 poster using 3 diffrent login from same ip. This has been fascinating to watch i cant imagine why this topic would be intresting to non nationals. But overall yes to heritage no to Andrew down with fergie bring back William sums up my view.

I would believe you're not a native English speaker from your spelling and grammar. What about posters response times makes you believe they're not native English speakers?

Also quite odd to be looking up people's IPs.

Is that in close proximity to the royal residences? Do people need to be security vetted? There must be some risk analysis needed. If so, who pays?

No idea on exact distance to Royal residences of each property ( there are ten ) although some Royal residences themselves can be rented aswell

People have access to the estate but no idea how close to the Royal residence
No you don’t need vetting you just book online

Other Royal estates offor the same
eg Sandringham, Duchy of Cornwall and others in Wales for example.

Oh God, it's like bloody Brexit all over again. Don't people ever learn. Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster for this country, now isn't the time to strip away the monarchy and commit suicide all over again. Utterly clueless!

Bellaunion · 21/02/2026 14:25

William and Kate love to make out their commitment to childhood development, mental health and screen free childhood. Yet their own children are brought up in an environment that's almost certainly going to give them some mental health complexities and furthermore they are wheeled out for every occasion and paraded on social media at every opportunity.

And just last week we had William in Saudi Arabia photographed with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who a US intelligence report found sanctioned the murder of the journalist of Jamal Khashoggi not to mention the other human rights atrocities that go on there.

If that's the kind of soft power that people want to celebrate, then some people frankly need their head examined.

Personally, I think we should give someone else a turn. Let's say every 5 years, we can all put our names in a hat for the job.

Would be no more random than the current lot.

Edited

Totally agree.

I've always said, every UK citizen over 25 without any criminal convictions should be pout in a ballot and then for 5 years they could be our Head of State.

At least there wouldn't be this replication of the very low-quality Windsor-Mountbatten genes. None of them is very bright.

Clipperchow · 21/02/2026 14:16

Don't necessarily disagree OP but can we make sure we have a total overhaul of our electoral system first? The thought of some utter tool like Starmer being head of state makes me want to jump off a bridge.

This is worth looking at. What truly beautiful properties some of them are. And before anyone says, yes I know some are Crown Estate and some privately owned.
What is something else, is the amount of land/acres and the number of rooms, the vastness and extravagance of these properties, castles and estates.

Is there a website? Duchy Lettings.com? Only naice people may/need apply

There are different websites depending on area
Here’s Balmorals with ten properties advertised

Yes but it’s a gilded cage. Would you do it in return for 24/7 scrutiny about your relationship, weight, family, health..? Would you trade it for never really just being able to go out for a spontaneous meal, or the cinema, or just to walk down the street anonymously? I wouldn’t.

I wouldn't and I think it is appalling we expect people born into it to live like that. Getting rid of the royals is doing them a favour as much as us.

Superhansrantowindsor · 21/02/2026 13:06

If they ‘work’ they should be paid a wage from the taxpayer. We should not pay for more than one palace to be maintained. Other palaces can be kept like Balmoral - their own personal property they are responsible for.

Pedallleur · 21/02/2026 13:05

madaboutpurple · 21/02/2026 11:54

They own lots of property, some are holiday homes that they rent out. Surely their own money could pay for themselves and they should not be publicly funded. The King owns a good number of properties in Yorkshire that are holiday rentals and they are not cheap to book.

gototogo · 21/02/2026 13:04

I don’t disagree but they also need to be able to not maintain buildings they don’t actually want to use eh the king doesn’t live at Buckingham palace, it’s simply an entertainment complex really - if he was to receive no money from us he can’t be expected to maintain a huge palace for entertaining foreign dignitaries that the government demands. Pretty sure he’d rather not be doing the garden parties, the opening of things etc - no money means no responsibility in my mind, so is that what the people want?

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 21/02/2026 13:03

If they are doing a job / event / visit / state visit on behalf of the country they should be paid
Just like we all should be

Apart from that we shouldn’t be financing them

As an actual, public servant, yesterday I was in calls from 9-1 regarding a major incident at one of the hospitals in my patch. That involved liaising between about 5 different teams in the hospital, ICB and region. I then ended up going to the hospital tin person yesterday afternoon (a two hour drive away) and lending a hand in the ground which involved mopping up water, moving patients and helping clean. In between that I was on the phone to our comms team and the comms teams in the hospital ans the ICB talking through how to handle the media (it’s not in any paper apart from a very local one due to other things being more of a headline thank god). I got home at 9pm after leaving at 7pm. I left the chief exec still mopping water. So far this morning I’ve been in three sit rep calls about that incident. Tomorrow is when I get to do the rest of the work I should have done yesterday.
now this isn’t a usual Friday for me, usually I’m in about 4-8 calls about problems in different services with a spot of report writing for our exec team in the gaps.
im not complaining as I get paid well for my mopping, but life would be considerably easier if all I had to do was get dressed up in nice clothes that were chosen for me by a dresser, get my hair styled and make up done, get a lift to a random place and make small talk, smile, wave and get given a bunch of flowers before going back to my tax payer funded house with numerous tax payer funded staff and have my house all nice and clean while my taxpayer funded chef cooks my food and my taxpayer funded butler serves me a G&T.

Yes, you have missed something. Google ‘Trump’ and ‘Royal invitation’ and ‘tariffs’.

As a PP said, Trumps just announced global tariffs, no exemptions for the UK.

Still waiting to see the benefits of "soft power" and the Royal family in regards to this...
