To think few lives have improved due to Labour’s policies

I knew they wouldn’t benefit me - but I thought they might help some people.

Train drivers have more money but other than that I’m struggling. I’ve lost my job as a direct result of their policies, it would be nice to find some positives.

YABU = my life had improved as a result of Labour’s policies.

YANBU = it hasn’t improved or has got worse

@EasternStandard how do we maintain employment with the AI changes?

The best thing to do is not hammer jobs via taxes and policy changes even before AI kicks in in a bigger way.

Hospitality and construction don’t use AI much and they’re seeing massive hits to hiring too.

Having a gov actively damaging youth employment and multiple sectors is madness. It sounds like business owners are realising they too fell for the spin pre GE from Labour and are now regretting it.

As @Lobstergodalso puts re job market

I think it’s too soon to say tbh. Where we are now took years of mistakes.

Which mistakes in particular? Remember that the Leader of the Tories at the time of the Brexit vote campaigned strongly for remain (although he did call the vote) but Corbyn was very weak in his support for remain. Labour are no less to blame for Brexit. Leading the country through covid would also have been dreadful for any government- can you imagine Starmer doing it?!

They seem to have killed the job market stone fckn dead. It was bad before but it nosedived. I thought shit was bad for my generation but I absolutely PITY youngsters now.

All my friends in the construction industry are on their ARSES.

Stamp duty increase slowed property market. I have to move to get work, likely to lose money on the house. Cool, why not?

Cost of living + refusal to move tax and student loan thresholds + liz truss mortgage rises = in the shitter.

5yrs ago life looked pretty good for me and it's been whipped away. It's worse for others but I can't say this govt is helping me.

I have directly benefited from NHS waiting lists going down and more funding. I have an autoimmune condition and the appointment was quicker than if I went privately.

Our employment rights will be strengthened in April with more legislation going through. I am currently in work and we have had issues with work changing our pay and conditions and they don’t want to recognise our union. From April that will change.

Inflation is down.

Will I ever recover the extra money we had to pay on our mortgage thanks to Liz Truss, no I won’t.

Do I want Labour to be more red Labour than blue yes I do. I would prefer if they made the wealthiest pay more tax (tax wealth not work) those who live off their investments.

We have the greediest men alive who want to hoard wealth and not pay their way. In the U.K. we have Jim Ratcliff billionaire with his hand out getting up to 125 million of UK tax payer money to help out his chemical plants & then he relocates to Monaco to avoid paying tax.

OP why aren’t you more angry about this? The richest in our society are there with their handouts and a Tory or Reform government will only pander more to the richest in our society, while the rest of us with no rights will be fighting each other for the scraps.

Inflation is down because the economy is going down the pan! Its the same with every single Labour Government. Tax the shit out of everything, crash the economy. This time is no different. Although the pace is pretty incredible.

Because I’m more focused on the lives of the majority than being jealous of the few. I believe in levelling up, not down.

It will take many years to even vaguely counter/undo all the shit policies inflicted by the Tories over several years plus the triple whammy of Brexit!!

If you’re expecting Labour to turn everything around in one term, that’s delusional and on a par with Reform voters. 🤣

Losing jobs though is that undoing anything? How?

People want to ignore reality though & want quick fixes hence the move to Reform.

Quite possibly due to high energy costs too. That's why manufacturers are leaving the UK in droves. We are losing entire industries. It is interesting to hear how the trade unions view this.

Yes, I find it odd that it would solely be down to one thing.

SomedayIllBeSaturdayNight · 18/02/2026 11:19

Namenamchange · 18/02/2026 10:57

if really hasn’t, it’s actually made it worse for a lot of families, and will push more chikdren into poverty, and over crowding. Not all, but some.

Interesting. Can you explain this a bit more? Do you mean because of the overall benefit cap?

Nothing.

And they only closed the entire UK operation because of the increased NI costs?

My life is unchanged but I don’t expect much after only 18 months.U

Especially to significantly impact what took 15 years before them to implement.

treeowl · 18/02/2026 11:16

Some of the youth unemployment is down to AI removing entry level jobs.

When I was doing my A-levels I worked in a shop, loads of my friends did. Many tills are automated now. Employers are less flexible now so it’s harder to fit the jobs around your study.

EasternStandard · 18/02/2026 11:15

mindutopia · 18/02/2026 10:57

I mean how long did it take the rich good ole boys to f it all up? I expect it’s going to take more than 18 months to fix it, especially with all the populist wanking currently going on to distract from the real work.

Like jobs decreasing And youth unemployment figures rocketing? Surely not even the most loyal Labour want that.

zurigo · 18/02/2026 11:12

DH and I are worse off, due to VAT on school fees. Our main worry though is for our teenage kids. Youth unemployment has massively risen due to the additional taxes on business and rise in min wage. It's now so hard for young people to get a job, either PT employment while they study, or a graduate job. There is a huge shortfall between the number of UK graduates (approx 1 million per year) and the number of graduate jobs available (approx. 200,000 per year). Add to that the shortage of housing and the CoL and things are so difficult for young people and this govt has made things much worse with their anti-business and anti-growth policies. I knew they were going to be bad and I knew they'd raise taxes to hand out more benefits, but they've been even worse than I was expecting.

treeowl · 18/02/2026 11:06

Tbh I’m not sure we are “fixable” now, just a doom spiral.

I've also lost my job due to their increased employer ni. My employer is closing their entire uk operation as its just too expensive to hire us now. Will never ever vote for Labour. . I hate them.

I bet you do. Many will be feeling the same. The attack on jobs is woeful, particularly for younger people.
