Silly clothes-washing argument

If your partner/spouse bringing the laundry basket downstairs to wash, would you expect her to be upset if you picked out only your clothes and put them on to wash while she was out walking the dog before work?

Or is my DP just a dickhead?

Complete non event

We do.our own, I prefer it that way
Zero drama

How do you split non clothes items - bedding towels, tea towels etc?

I sort my washing by colour and if we each did our own washing we would be using the washing machine twice as much as it is currently being used. It would be such a waste of resources and not great for the environment

Dontlletmedownbruce · 17/02/2026 20:10

I'd be annoyed too. This is what my teenager might do, and I'd still be furious. No excuse for a grown man

Guess who's on laundry duty for the family for the rest of the month, @panpanpanpanpan ?

Because it sure as shit isn't you.

Sorry, rambled too much and confused my sentence subjects.

I'm the wife. My husband saw me bring the mixed load down, then while I was out, picked out only his things and put them on to wash.

We normally just take turns doing washing, never separate by person.

It's a very inefficient way to wash. I only ever wash full loads.

Why does he do it?

TeamToeBeans · 17/02/2026 18:32

I think it’s his way of saying he’d prefer to do all his own laundry from now on.

f1mercedesfan · 17/02/2026 18:29

panpanpanpanpan · 17/02/2026 18:12

That was my argument, basically asking him why on earth he would do that. I'd already sorted darks from lights so he could have just bundled one load in.

He said 'it'll all get washed anyway...'

No trip or anything that means he needs all his clothes done first.

Remember to bring it up if he moans the electricity bill is higher than normal this month that he decided to make it so there was extra washing loads as part of the cause for the higher bill

Maryamlouise · 17/02/2026 18:29

Did he then leave and expect you to hang it out?

@Buscake the washing fairy (aka me), clearly. He went to work, I was WFH today.

This is probably why. He won’t be home later to wash his clothes so he started them off before leaving knowing you’d be home to wash yours later.

Perhaps he was in a hurry and was afraid he’d mix in something that you only hand wash, or has to be on delicate?

gottakeeponmoving · 17/02/2026 18:28

DH tends to pick out his own washing. I wouldn't say it upsets me. Generally, I have an inner moan about it and then I remember how much I like my nice knickers and bras and how much I pay for my clothes and I realise that it's probably for the best.

FeralWoman · 17/02/2026 18:28

He was a dickhead.

panpanpanpanpan · 17/02/2026 18:26

It was a little less than a full load by my reckoning (but he never puts as much as I would in anyway).

I did a load of my own during the day, and have told him he's responsible for all the rest because of his selfishness this morning.

Anybody doing that is a dickhead.

But I don’t like people doing my laundry so for me specifically I would rather they leave it all to me or wash their clothes separately.

This 100%!

Sod that, I’d never wash anything of his again. He can become his own washing fairy if he’s so eager to get his stuff done.

VintedReturns · 17/02/2026 18:19

How full washing the machine out of interest? Did he have a whole load of his own stuff? Or did he have less than a full load and chose not to include your clothes?

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 17/02/2026 18:19

Your husband is a twat…I’d be seriously upset over this 🤬

He said 'it'll all get washed anyway...'

is he going to be doing it?? Or does he mean you’ll do it anyway?

ThePoshUns · 17/02/2026 18:13

He is a dickhead. I’d be fuming if my DH did this.

FunMustard · 17/02/2026 18:13

I don't think I'd be upset, but I'd certainly be confused as to why he did that. I'd expect him to do the rest of the washing when his finished.

user2848502016 · 17/02/2026 18:12

So you brought down a basket of washing down to do and he picked out his stuff only and put them on a wash instead of putting the whole lot on?! Completely unreasonable unless he specifically wanted a few bits on a quick wash to wear that day or something

Presumably he thinks it's your job to look after the whole family and his job to look after himself.
