To think the hotel were out of order with valentines stay/room?

I had a night away booked with my boyfriend on Saturday (the first time we had stayed overnight with each other).

It was a modern hotel with a glass window to the bathroom which was supposed to turn opaque when a button was selected. It was apparent this wasn’t working.

We went downstairs to reception to ask for it to be fixed, receptionist said they’d send someone to take a look. Maintenance man came up and said it was a common issue but he didn’t have the part needed (and wouldn’t have it until midweek) so he accompanied us back to reception again saying they’d give us another room.

The receptionist said there was no alternative rooms available as the hotel was full due to valentines and when this happens, couples have ‘seen it all before so just laugh about it’ and enjoy their stay.

I said this wasn’t acceptable and asked for the manager - who did appear from the back office but basically doubled down and said there was nothing they could do. She did offer us a voucher for a drink each in the bar (really!!) as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

As we had traveled some distance we decided to stay, and used the communal loos in the reception area whenever there was a need (luckily there was no need to in the night).

I found them thoroughly dismissive and am awaiting a response to my formal complaint to head office.

AIBU to find these customer service standards appalling?

Image attached of what I mean (this isn’t mine but from another review of same hotel of people unhappy with the set up)

Well sadly, we can't all be a Slack Alice. Your low standards are your own business but some of us set the bar a bit higher!
.

DP and I were once seasick on an overnight ferry. Spent hours hanging over the loo bowl together to puke into it.
It hasn't wrecked our relationship, but also it was unavoidable.

Its a budget hotel, comparing it to your average six figure earning Mumsnetter doesnt mean anything. Its a well known bed in a box room hotel, hence the price.

It’s nothing to do with budget. As a “six figure earning Mumsnetter” I can say the trend is rife in very expensive hotels too (possibly even more so as it looks all designer-y). There’s no need to be rude about the OP’s choice of hotel.

Travelodge is a budget hotel
They have proper doors and walls

Yeah I’ve stayed in loads of budget hotels in my time and they’ve all had walls between the room and the toilet. I don’t think you should have to expect to pay extra for that.

It might be budget by the standards of your average six figure earning Mumsnetter, but I can assure you there was nothing budget about the price.

I read the title and thought I know the hotel you mean! We've been together thirty years so it didn't bother me per se, but I took a video of the opaque glass changing and sent to friends as was incredulous that anyone would want that in an hotel room 😂

Mind you, I love the Sanderson but that has a rather similar bathroom situ going on 😂

user1493379562 · 19/02/2026 08:50

OMG that sounds appalling! I think I would be demanding a refund! We have 3 toilets in our house but my husband gets relegated to using the downstairs one if he needs a poo! We have an en suite shower and loo which we both use to wee but we always shut the door. I do not want to see him on the loo or vice versa not to mention the smell! The hotels we have stayed in fortunately have had separate bathroom / toilets however I always try to use it before he does.

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 19/02/2026 08:35

You are not being unreasonable. I’ve been with my husband for 30 years and would still not be happy with a clear door on the bathroom (in fact recently chose a different hotel in London on this basis as the photos showed clear doors). Some things just don’t need to be shared!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/02/2026 07:40

Surely in any hotel if you go down to reception and report something is broken/missing, they should make some effort to repair/replace? Not just shrug it off? So it shouldn't really matter whether it's a missing hairdryer, a broken kettle or a transparent bathroom wall - they should make some attempt to rectify the situation - not just tell you that you can go out with wet hair/do without a cup of tea/shit yourself inside out in full view of your partner.

And offering a free drink? What if, like me, you don't drink alcohol? You're meant to take a glass of weak squash or a J2O and put up with it?

Truly one of the most bonkers posts I've read!

I absolutely would not be laughing it off. I want privacy in the bathroom, I’ve been with my husband for 25 years and I do not want to see him use the bathroom or be seen by him when I’m using it. yanbu

I’ve just talked about this thread and phenomenon to OH and he wouldn’t want to stay somewhere with this ‘en suite’ set up either. And he’s perfectly happy being naked, and we look after each other when unwell.

But we’d both be awkward about the other’s awkwardness, especially when it’s an unnecessary and cheapskate hotel trend at our social expense.

Cobwebsofwisdom · 18/02/2026 23:34

I am 'marking myself safe' from this phenomenon by committing to only staying in old inns (my preference anyway!) or premier inns and the like, from now on until forever.

I shudder at the thought of staying somewhere like this. Even if it was a very expensive swanky hotel for £20 a night I would sooner stay in a dodgy B&B with a proper door on its bathroom! 😆

Archaea · 18/02/2026 22:55

There is a big TikTok campaign about this and it hit the press. First thing I always check now before booking as so many hotels have glass and not proper bathrooms.

springtome · 18/02/2026 22:30

my DH went away with his mate and it was opaque glass but it felt odd to them to see the shadow of each other in the bathroom.

it wouldn’t massively bother us but we have been together 25 years and seen each other in many states. But i wouldn’t be comfortable in a very new relationship.

ShakyBake · 18/02/2026 22:22

I had this once where there was a power cut mid shower and my bathroom became visible to the people in the dining room

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 18/02/2026 22:14

This is absolutely gross and l think you should name the hotel.

I really hope that this type of toilet set up is not going to become the norm.

You know, one place does it and it spreads. like wildfire all over the planet within a week. You know a really cool Disrupter dude invention.

Did this toilet/bathroom set up have a good extractor fan?

Whatever next.Squat toilets cum showers become the norm,?

Dragons Den. Here l come!!!

Purplebunnie · 18/02/2026 22:03

@Random321 at 17.15 makes some very valid points if you change your mind and take it further.

You are not a prude I have been married for 43 years and I would be horrified at this arrangement.

You did not get what you paid for which is a fully functioning room. The hotel made no attempt to rectify the situation and there have been many ideas on what may have made a difference by various PP.

The receptionist response, well she needs some training in customer service

And of course you made full use of the room, what were you supposed to do, it was Valentines Night I expect every hotel in the country was fully booked

They are trying it on

So peeps want to be embarrassed when it comes to looking after elderly partners? Get real while you can!

Bit different to going away for a romantic Valentines night away with a new partner, and it being the first time you’ve ever been away for the night away together though isn’t it?

YANBU at all . We’ve been married 26 years and I know we’d both hate it . I’m actually shocked that some people think you’re being unreasonable!!! I can’t get over it that the hotel think it’s ok either . Thank you for pointing it out I didn’t know such things existed so good to know

ImogenBrocklehurst · 18/02/2026 21:34

Reportingfromwherever · 17/02/2026 13:38

I can’t believe people saying this is OK. Who wants to have a poo or change a tampon with your other half watching?

Funnily enough OP there is a story in the telegraph today on this very phenomenon.

YANBU.

I read the same article. I agree with you - married 4 years, together 11 and no desire to share that with my husband. Or anyone else I might be sharing a room with.

Increasingly this seems to be a design in hotels, is it cheaper or something? Who wants this?!

DH and I have been together for 25 years. I have not witnessed him shitting and I’m not interested in starting that on a romantic getaway.

In some of those Hotel rooms its for more light as the only window is in the bathroom. It didn't bother us too much as if one person is on the bed, or the chair they can't see the toilet as its not in front of the door. Not ideal though if you are aren't comfortable with it, and a drunk each is a poor way to compensate.

LucyLoo1972 · 18/02/2026 20:18

UnctuousUnicorns · 18/02/2026 17:11

Who'd have thunk we'd ever get to a stage where expecting privacy in a toilet/bathroom would render you precious and demanding. I very much doubt Muslims, Jewish people and others who value modesty and dignity in these matters, would put up with this shit, and quite bloody right, and nor should any other sane person who is understandably horrified by it, have to tolerate it, either. I'd be pushing for a better resolution than the cop out the OP got. But then, like a PP said, we wouldn't have stayed there, we would have checked into the nearest Motorway Services. At least with Travelodge or Days Inn etc. you get a proper bathroom with solid, opaque door and wall.

Funny you mention faith becasue I was a PP who said we had a similar thing and were uncomfortable with it.

🤣
Thanks for your faux concern, but we're good 😁

Can you imagine actually feeling sorry for someone because they don’t want to watch their partner shit? 😂
