To think the test must be wrong

I am in a state of hysteria here. I am in the peri and on HRT. We haven’t been particularly careful because I didn’t think I needed to be.

Have been feeling tired, off colour and have had ridiculously sore boobs. Have just had a positive test.

Can the HRT hormones somehow affect the outcome of the test?! This is the hope I am clinging on to.

Anyone?

I have to say that my mother was Irish born and bred and she totally believed in women's access to contraception and abortion. She had a very practical streak and remembered horrible tales about young women sent to live with aunts in a distant part of Ireland for about a year before returning home and even worse tales about women killing themselves. She remembered the horror of married women worn out by a baby a year for years on end. She did emigrate though so she possibly was not representative of her time. Abortion is now legal in Ireland, following a referendum, so the majority of Irish voters must have have caught up with her thinking.

I am astonished by people exhorting OP to enjoy motherhood. She has enjoyed motherhood five times already and with the best will in the world, I am struggling to see how she could further enjoy motherhood at 49 with five other children, young children, needing care and after a no doubt very problematic pregnancy. I can remember how exhausted I was with my second at 37 and I simply couldn't imagine coping or wanting to cope at 49 and that's even with three less children. In any case, very few pregnancies at this age result in a live birth because Mother Nature simply takes care of the problem.

Just sending a hug @chillidoritto

Look after yourself, whatever the outcome.

Why did you think that you didn't have to still be careful?

That is not what OP is here for.
Very unhelpful comment!

GarlicBound · 17/02/2026 05:21

I shouldn't be surprised by the mindless, soppy emotional blackmail being posted here by several. I am - perhaps not so much surprised as disgusted. I'm so old, I remember when abortion was not readily available and there was no chemical option. I never heard this bullshit, just gentle queries of the 'are you sure?' variety and offers of assistance.

I'm sure it would've been different had I lived in Ireland. I'd like you all to take your thinly-veiled, moralistic judgement back to whatever dark backwater it came from. And shut the fuck up when speaking to a woman facing a problematic pregnancy.

Would it be so bad to have a baby?

A 6th child at age 49? Yes that would be pretty bad.

OP if you are pregnant you can terminate easily and quickly with a tablet. Don't panic.

ItsNotMeEither · 17/02/2026 04:03

This is for others reading who don’t wish to end up in the same situation.

At 50, I had passed the no periods for 12 months stage. Then, we went away for 8 weeks on a group trip. From our almost all male household, we now had three term girls with us. The girls were in synch and guess who started having periods again! Totally caught me by surprise as that kept going for another six months, like a final curtain call. So I can totally see how this can happen.

Wishing you all the best as you navigate this op. You owe nobody any explanations for your choices.

CaffeineAndChords · 17/02/2026 04:01

OP, just wanted to give you a handhold. Really hope you are ok. Flowers

Hope you are okay, OP x

CallItLoneliness · 17/02/2026 02:16

OP I really feel for you. I wish you peace in whatever steps you take from here--you've done nothing wrong, and your choices, whatever they are, are valid.

Supple · 17/02/2026 02:08

Wow - there is so much projection and ‘I did this so you should do the same’ on this thread with a lot of nasty ‘ableist’ comments too.

OP, yes positive test means you are pregnant. Speak to your partner and medical professionals. Get in real life support.

You don’t owe anyone an update.

chillidoritto · 16/02/2026 17:28

Thanks everyone. I’ve been very stupid. Please let this be a lesson to others.

You are not stupid just thought you couldn't get pregnant.

MeMyselfandI2 · 17/02/2026 01:47

I don't know anything beyond what you have stated, but all I can say is I wish you the very best in a situation that is obviously very difficult. Only you know the totality of your life and your family circumstances. Only you can make the right decision for you and your family. Whatever that decision is, I hope you have peace and good health. Please don't call yourself stupid. You should not accept being called stupid by anyone, including yourself. Nobody should judge you, period. This includes yourself.

Stigsmother · 17/02/2026 01:09

Please don't beat yourself up OP, you aren't the first, and you definitely won't be the last. A change of life baby is a well known thing. For some its a blessing, for others a disaster and you have had your babies. Do what you need to.Flowers

DeepRubySwan · 17/02/2026 01:07

And to add to the above, a natural pregnancy to full term at 50 is very rare and you are highly likely to miscarry anyway. This happened to a friend of mine who is 47. It was extremely hard on her emotionally and physically and she bled for months. Consider a termination, the earlier the better. And you need contraception until you are fully menopausal (12 months no period).

I don’t normally correct spelling and grammar of this posting but I’m making an exception because you’re guilt tripping the OP.
It’s should be baby’s not babies.

DeepRubySwan · 17/02/2026 01:04

You are pregnant most likely. See your GP ASAP.

Darkladyofthesonnets · 17/02/2026 01:01

Mistakes happen. If you were a woman of 48 trying to conceive people would be busily telling you how unlikely it was that you would get pregnant. I would absolutely, in your circumstances, have a termination. The rate of Down Syndrome is about 1 in 12 at your age and that is a huge consideration. I know there are wonderful people who have children with Down Syndrome and talk about the joy they have brought into their lives but I am not one of those people. I had amnio tests with both my children for that precise reason. You already have five children and being 49 years old with a newborn with five other young children sounds disastrous for you and for your existing children.

TrixieFatell · 17/02/2026 00:50

Ah lovely, what a shock. Please don't beat yourself up, you won't be the only one. We have had a few menopause pregnancies come through our unit, and I also know of some who have had the same situation as you and have decided to terminate. I totally agree with those recommending BPAS, they will offer a scan and advise you on your options. Please be gentle with yourself, thinking of you x

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 17/02/2026 00:44

If you're pregnant you're very likely to miscarry @chillidoritto

MooFroo · 17/02/2026 00:37

sending hugs OP, hope things work out for you x

Im peri menopausal and couldn’t even imagine being pregnant 😳

Isittimeformynapyet · 17/02/2026 00:21

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 16/02/2026 17:59

Lots of reasons why someone doesn’t want to or cannot continue a pregnancy. And luckily in the UK we are allowed to make that decision for ourselves!

OP, GP is unlikely to go any tests to check for pregnancy if you have had a positive result. You can self refer to termination services if that’s what you wish, they will scan you there if unsure of dates.

If you decide to continue the pregnancy then you can also self refer for maternity services too.

For what it’s worth, I understand the reasoning behind not wanting to have another baby and would absolutely do the same in your situation so no judgement here unlike some other posters on this thread 🙄

so no judgement here unlike some other posters on this thread 🙄

At the point you posted there were literally no pps being judgemental, not even the one who asked a stupid question (and she's denied it anyway).

I often see comments like yours where the poster seems to be basing their response on the responses from previous threads - I mean, there's loads of judgement on MN, but not on this thread .......... yet!

I'll continue reading though. I daresay they're on their way.
