Tell me about a time when you felt old

This is absolutely ‘just for fun’ on a wet Sunday, so please take this in the spirit that it’s intended!

I was at an 18th birthday party a few weeks ago. I went to the buffet and there was hot and cold food (think curry and sandwiches) so I had a plate of both. A lovely young man behind me, asked where I was sitting and whether I needed help, carrying one of the plates back.

Im able bodied and 44 😆 but appreciated the sentiment

Your turn!

Explaining dial up broadband to the youngins at work. The didn't believe me that you couldn't phone someone and surf the net at the same time.

Same colleague, went on holiday abroad and was telling us they bought grapes at a market that had seeds inside them (shock horror). Were totally astounded when I said seedless grapes are a pretty recent thing and all grapes had seeds when I was a kid.

I'm only in my 40's and the youngins make me feel so old 😂.

I am still slightly upset that I now qualify for Asda‘s “winter warmers” in their cafe…. soup, bread, and a hot drink for £1 for the over 60’s

Me too, I'm 62. There are a few perks though, seniors menu in the fish shop we go to is great value. They did however question if I was old enough in another restaurant which cheered me up no end!

Mags1001 · 15/02/2026 15:24

I've just asked the woman in the SPAR for mints.
She looked at me blankly
Extra Strong Mints?
Huh?
MINTS! Murry mints polo mints, Everton mints, spearmints, extra strong mints.

Not MINCE.
She had no idea
Apparently if id said Trebor she might have had a clue.

I remember, many years ago, my son asking me if I'd been given groats for pocket money "when I was young".

They'd been studying the Middle Ages at school. I'm not sure what age he thought I was, though. Surely not several hundred years old?

Maybe he thought middle-aged = born in the Middle Ages??

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 15/02/2026 15:11

I don't understand this one.
Why shouldn't your son be asked to reach the top shelf?

I don't think there was a son there - it was the wife who was thought to be the son of the poster?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/02/2026 15:17

OK, I am old, but telling DDs that when I was very little, the milkman came with a horse. I was probably only 40s at the time, but to them it was like something from the Dark Ages and screamingly funny. They’d say, ‘Back in the real Olden Days, Mum, when you were young…’.

BringonSpringnowplease · 15/02/2026 15:16

Ds was telling me what he was doing in primary school (he wasn't one to pay a lot of attention to be fair) and asked if I'd been around in Victorian times.

JacknDiane · 15/02/2026 15:15

A lovely young man offered me his seat on the tube years ago. And I was grateful.

These are brilliant!! 🤣

at the shop years ago I got asked if my son could reach the top shelf for (ironically) a little old lady (🙈) she was probably in her 80’s.

I was 41 & with my wife 🙈 neither of us were very impressed but did see the funny side & help her out!!

I recently got cystitis on holiday and thought, no problem, I'll drive back via Tesco's and get the pharmacist to prescribe antibiotics - they can do that since I had my last bout, years ago.

The young assistant took one look at me and said "how old are you?". I said 66. She said "sorry but we can't prescribe for anyone over 64. You'll need to visit your GP.". Gah!

At a wildlife park, looking at the armadillos. I said Oh look, soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside!

Everyone there looked at me as if I was an actual serial killer. I was probably a good fifteen years older than the oldest person.

I showed DS16 this advert on Youtube a few weeks ago, after a cute armadillo turned up in my Twitter feed. "It's a Dime bar advert". "What's a Dime bar?"

I'm 28 but teach in a secondary school so get plenty of god I'm old feelings. This week it was saying "thats a bit final destination" to a student waving scissors

Preceded by a whole year 10 class asking what's that?

I went to see the latest Final Destination film at the cinema with my 18 and 17 year olds a while back.
They love these films and I used to have to make up FD bedtime stories for them 🤣

Bloody hell 😆 I hope you told them that you used to wear your heels on nights out, even when it snowed

I said thank you and had a lovely day wfh. Thought to myself, great perk here.

dontjustdontdoit · 15/02/2026 15:00

I have a nursing student born 2 years after I qualified ☹️

Dollymylove · 15/02/2026 14:59

@LunaStars Im a youth of nearly 65 and I quite like a bit of Vera Lynn 😍 I love a smidgeon of Glenn Miller as well ( my mums era)

Took my little son for an X-ray on his broken arm, radiographer asked “is it mum or grandma?” Looking at me quizzically…..

My sons friend, who was about 7, asked him if his Nan was staying long. The "Nan" was my YOUNGER sister 😅
30 years on it still tickles me

Newbie8918 · 15/02/2026 14:54

Well these stories have given me a wonderful laugh. Ive laughed so hard my false teeth fell out 😆

When my 25 year old boss asked what it was like in the war.
I was born in 1961 😵‍💫😵‍💫

I was in the dentist and they had the radio on in the background. A rap song came on with quite explicit lyrics. The dentist FLEW across the room to turn it off and apologised profusely. I was late 50s and pretty unshockable.
Also a meeting with a much younger colleague. I suggested we nipped over to the canteen to get a coffee but he thought we'd better not as he was worried the path would be slippery.

Edited

I wonder if this dates back of the Mary Whitehouse era when everything was socially more conservative and older ladies would have been shocked. Older ladies are more likely to have been punks nowadays! It's like old people's homes who still put on Vera Lynn, forgetting that someone who is 80 would have been young in the 60s not the 40s.

Yukono · 15/02/2026 14:48

At DDs 6th birthday party one of her friends asked if I was DDs mum or grandma!! I was 37!!

Bertiebiscuit · 15/02/2026 14:45

Why do people talk to older women as though we are infants? Disgustingly ageist and sexist.
