Tell me about a time when you felt old

This is absolutely ‘just for fun’ on a wet Sunday, so please take this in the spirit that it’s intended!

I was at an 18th birthday party a few weeks ago. I went to the buffet and there was hot and cold food (think curry and sandwiches) so I had a plate of both. A lovely young man behind me, asked where I was sitting and whether I needed help, carrying one of the plates back.

Im able bodied and 44 😆 but appreciated the sentiment

Your turn!

At a gig down the front at Ally Pally and got chatting to a young women next to us. During the conversation she commented how it was amazing and cool(not her word... Can't remember the phrase she used) that people our age still enjoyed music so much and went to live gigs. I was 39! That was the first time I truly felt old

  1. Still go to gigs and concerts, clubbing and festivals. Wonder if she does...?
Megsdaughter · 15/02/2026 19:58

When I remember my DS is going to be 47 this year, that only 3 years off 50. I dobt feel any older than 40! Then i look in the mirrir and remember im 65. 😫

Asuitablecat · 15/02/2026 19:57

Down.

Down stairs.
Down uneven steps.
Down hills or mountains with rocky bits.

I no longer jump off walls.

Being asked by my teenage son why I was 'a bit slow' on our run today. He's been running less than 6 months. But he's 30 years younger than me. It was still 6 miles in under an hour, but youth clearly beats everything.

Pliudev · 15/02/2026 19:44

We went to Barcelona to celebrate my 60th birthday. On the airport bus, three young men offered me their seats. It had never happened before. How did they know?

Chinsupmeloves · 15/02/2026 19:28

When I talk about anything from my childhood, teenage years and your 20s lol 😆

Middleagedspreadisreal · 15/02/2026 19:27

Last week when I found out a new colleague's dad is the same age as my DS and her mum is younger than him - which means I'm old enough to be my colleague's grandmother 😭

catera · 15/02/2026 19:26

Trying to explain toilet seat covers to someone. The fluffy ones? I said like your nan had with the matching pedestal mat
had to google them in the end to show

JustMeAndTheFish · 15/02/2026 19:25

When I realised that I was searching out gigs from favourite artists as “they may never tour again” 😬

Hollowvoice · 15/02/2026 19:14

In my early teenage years we used to occasionally look after next door's grandchildren. One of those children has just had a baby. Logically I know we're all 30 years older but the thought of that little child now being a parent definitely makes me feel old!

Frillysweetpea · 15/02/2026 19:12

I sat on the floor rather than stand in a very overcrowded train because I don't really care what people think and it was more comfortable than swaying around. I was offered a seat by a young man in his early 20s and politely declined because it was a long distance train, I wasn't going far and really didn't need him to be chivalrous. I expected him to make the same offer to the several women in their 40s who got on at the same time as me who were standing. He didn't and I was wondering why when I realised to my horror it was probably not (just) my sex but my age and, perhaps, perceived frailty that he was responding to - I'm mid 60s.

Explaining a fax machine to one of our apprentices. Their mind was utterly boggled that we didn’t just email stuff.

I found myself explaining a fax machine a few days ago 😂

BruFord · 15/02/2026 19:08

I live near a university so I constantly feel old. I stopped by a coffee shop this morning and every person in there was 25-30 years younger than me (I’m 51).

Mind you, all the staff there know me ‘cos I’m one of their few older clients. They fuss around me abit. 🤣

Sharptonguedwoman · 15/02/2026 19:06

In a branch of Screwfix, they had music playing and on came Silver machine by Hawkwind. I said the the (very helpful) staff-Oh every party in about 1973. Staff member said they were born in 1973 (still old, I know). Off I slunk.

cinnamongirl123 · 15/02/2026 19:06

When I looked in the mirror after the xmas “holidays” - they were so stressful I looked like I’d aged 20 years in 2 weeks 😫

Pixilicious1 · 15/02/2026 18:56

When I realised I was older than the mother of one of the managers who works for me.

wishingonastar101 · 15/02/2026 18:50

I was asked why I don't have eyebrows and had to explain "the 90's"

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 15/02/2026 18:38

Tradies started calling me "dear" or "love" instead of "darling".

MrsLindaBelcher · 15/02/2026 18:36

• Every time I fill my date of birth in online and I have to scroll for what seems like forever to get to my birth year.
• My sons girlfriend asking me what a mammogram was after she saw a sticky note on my fridge reminding me to ring up to book one.
*I recently had a dream I was pushing my newborn in her pram and someone asked me if I was her Grandma. Took me days to get over that and I even went to get my hair cut so I felt a bit better about myself.
I’m early 40s.

SmudgeButt · 15/02/2026 18:34

When a good friend from work started talking about her mom and I realised the mom was a year younger than me.

Blushingm · 15/02/2026 18:33

My daughter reminded me I’d been alive in 6 decades…….im 47 but she pointed out I’d been in the ‘70’s, ‘80’s, 90’s, 00’s, 10’s and ‘20’s

Cakegold · 15/02/2026 18:28

Every single morning , when I wake up stiff and sore ! Mind you , im 68 ! I just dont believe it most days ! Just as busy, still working, still exercising, brain sharp on the whole , ( except i cant remember words every now and again!)
I look after myself better as more time , children grown, no tiny grandchildren nearby, I can honestly say Im fine with it !

HazelBite · 15/02/2026 18:24

I knew I was old the day a young person called me "Dear"

University admissions tutor here. I'm reading applications from people born in 2008!!
I told a student she was wearing a t shirt of one of my favourite bands, the Ramones. It depressed me that she'd never heard of them and just liked the design.

Edited

My son was born in 2008. I feel old that he’s applying for university this year 😂

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 15/02/2026 18:22

When younger people now say “ ah bless “, to most comments I make 😂

JMSA · 15/02/2026 18:21

I was looking at my body in the mirror the other day. My bum - which was always a nice big peach - seems to have fallen 😭 I was gutted when I saw it. If anyone can recommend uplifting pants for a saggy arse, please shout!
