I thought that my neighbours were moving their furniture about when it thundered. I thought that the moon was made of cheese. I thought that periods started on the first day of each month.

My brothers told me sausages were tiny baby pigs and grew into piglets

It is!

T'is not. My husband thinks it is

Itsasecretnow · 14/02/2026 16:59

Going to admit to a few more now - please go easy, I was little…😆 along with the people on the radio being inside and the earwig thing…
-I thought cats were girls and dogs were boys
-sprouts were baby cabbages
-mice were baby rabbits

Im sure there were more. I had rather a vivid imagination from the time I was little. I think maybe due to the fact that i was a voracious reader from a very young age; i loved books, i inhaled them, and enjoyed getting caught up in all these imaginative worlds, so im sure that’s where my imagination came in. That’s my excuse anyway 🤣

SmoothSquirrel · 14/02/2026 16:54

I thought that eating carrots helped you to see in the dark.
When our goldfish died my mum flushed them down the loo and said they’d gone to heaven so I thought heaven was down the toilet.

igelkott2026 · 14/02/2026 16:54

I thought Switzerland was further away from the UK than China. I was quite surprised when I was old enough to have an atlas and saw the reverse was true.

MamaBobo · 14/02/2026 16:54

I was so disappointed when I saw a train go over the Forth Bridge @ThatsRoughBuddy . I mean why did they build it like a roller coaster and then go through the middle….just couldn’t get my head round that as a child.

Growing up in that part of the world I believed that all motorways were red, as in had a red road surface, because the only motorway we used to use when I was small was the M90 leading to the Forth Road Bridge…and it was red. Another disappointment.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 14/02/2026 16:52

Glaswegians came from a different country, either Glasway or Glaswegia.

I believed that earwigs were so called because they could crawl in your ear and build a nest shaped like a wig. I still have to sleep with my hair covering my ears to prevent this happening.

Omg yes!! Same as you, and I still can’t shake that thought! As far as I’m still concerned they can and they do and I try and keep my hair over my ears 😱 They still freak me out as much as they did then, I get the creeps and feel sick if I ever see in and have to get as far away as I can!
seeing these posts, there are so many things that I think were quite common for many of us when we were children, so I’m not feeling quite so daft for mine now 😄
eta: I didn’t think the nest thing shaped like a wig tho, but yes I thought they would nest 😂

I was 3 in the late 70s/early 80s. I genuinely believed I was a songwriter and that I had written In The Navy by The Village People, Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder, and Working My Way Back To You by The Spinners.

As a pp said, I also believed that every time a song was on the radio, that the singers were physically inside the radio.

It is!

It's not illegal

Lol.

Indeed! Not much you can say about something so ridiculous 😄

Contrarymary30 · 14/02/2026 16:42

That cats were female and dogs were male of the same species .

That it was illegal to drive with the light on inside the car.

I thought this was how trains went over the Forth Bridge. The first time I saw one go over I was astounded at my stupidity!

(photo incoming)

That looks perfectly reasonable to me 😂

Periwinkletoes · 14/02/2026 16:37

When the minister in church said 'very God to very god' I thought it entirely reasonable that the fairies had a god as well.

We had one of those old, big, radiogram sideboard type pieces of furniture, and it had a small orange light when it was on. I can remember, when I was really quite little, looking in to that orange light when the radio was on, thinking that maybe there were people in there and that I’d be able to see them through the light 😂😂😂 I was so very young! Possibly one of my earlier recollections. Im sure i had more imagination than I do now!

Lol.

I thought when my parents took money out of the atm, there was an actual physical box with their names and their money in it behind the wall 🤣🤣🤣 mortified now.

lizziebuck · 14/02/2026 16:34

I lived on an estuary with another country visible and was convinced that when the tide went out it was because the other country had it!

probably a common one…she hopes!

I thought that people were inside the radio. I would say hello to the wireless and i was disappointed when i didn't get a hello in return.

That the blankety-blank chequebook and pen was an actual book of cheques, and the only way to get a chequebook was to win one on blankety-blank. I was very confused that my parents had a chequebook but would deny they'd ever been on the show, I rationalised it by assuming they didn't want other people to know in our village in case they all started asking them for cheques.

I thought every song on the radio was live and performed at the moment it was being broadcasted.

That if you flushed the toilet whilst sat on it, a vampire would come up the u-bend and bite your bum (don't ask, I have no idea where that came from!) 😅
