Worst Valentine’s Day ever

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 14/02/2026 15:33

It’s Valentine’s Day.
My daughter isn’t speaking to me.
I have just said goodbye to my grandsons (her children) for what might be the last time in a while.
And my DH (bless his cotton socks) has gone to the football in a town two hours away leaving me alone with only the dog for company until at least eight o’clock.
Please will someone tell me I have a right to be miserable, or am I supposed to invoke the wartime spirit and keep calm and carry on. I’m beginning to lose my grip on reality.

I’m sorry for your loss @Scoose

A hard day for you. 💐

Scoose · 14/02/2026 19:29

im sorry about your daughter and hope you resolve things, I hope you can salvage some of the day when your husband gets home.
Mines been shit it's my third one since my husband died and I'm so sick of being on my own and not having g anyone who loves me and I know it's just a day but its pretty hard when it's rammed down your throat everywhere you look

Ljzjta · 14/02/2026 19:23

You’re a grown up and your husband is enjoying the football. Not a big deal, it’s only Valentine’s Day!

Mandorle · 14/02/2026 19:20

I hope you watched a film with the dog, did an outdoor activity with it, then ordered in food you like and the family doesn't.

Waitingfordoggo · 14/02/2026 19:12

I think it’s the recommendation of wine as an assumption that everyone likes wine or alcohol. I don’t assume everyone likes cheese or cakes just because I do so I don’t say ‘Oooh, get yourself some nice cheese to eat’ which is what I would do if I wanted to treat myself. As someone who drinks very rarely (and never wine 🤢) I notice this sort of thing a lot. It’s a default suggestion and it’s a bit annoying.

I’m another one whose favourite thing is being at home alone with the dog. Actually my husband is here and I’m mildly annoyed about it 😂

And what if the OP was a recovering alcoholic? What if she just didn’t drink?! It’s so annoying seeing people casually recommending others to use alcohol when they’re having a bad day without even knowing their circumstances.

fFS there’s always one.

MsSmartShoes · 14/02/2026 18:33

I’m sorry that you’ve fallen out with your daughter. That sucks.
However, Valentine’s Day is for young people who aren’t yet seasoned by the sheer graft required to sustain a marriage.

JLou08 · 14/02/2026 18:27

Valentines day is just another day.
What's going in with your DD and GC would be hard on any day and you feeling upset about that and unsupported by your DH is valid.

Ilovepastafortea · 14/02/2026 18:27

Sorry you're having a crappy day OP.

I suggest that you ring DH & ask him to bring home a takeaway. In the meantime, have a lovely bath, light some scented candles get into some comfy clothes & cuddle up in front of the TV with the dog watching something that you enjoy.

HoppityBun · 14/02/2026 18:19

Sorry you’re having a lonely day. My view of Valentine’s Day is that it was traditionally for couples who weren’t yet together : the anonymous message was “be my Valentine”. They were always unsigned. If you’ve been together a while then it’s not really a thing.

I hated getting stuff because it a certain date.

When we were still single, my friend and I used to send each other Valentines cards from different places, so that we knew we’d get one. But always unsigned.

Jesus, Really?

Uricon2 · 14/02/2026 18:16

I think a big problem we have at times as women is not making our needs and expectations clear and expecting them to be listened to. Obviously the situation with your daughter is unrelated and I hope it gets sorted, but maybe next year tell DH what you want to do on Valentines Day. It doesn't have to be anything grand of course, but eg spending a bit of time together over a nice meal isn't.

If it goes unheard and unacknowledged, reconsider many things.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 14/02/2026 17:54

I love an evening in with the dog (and a couple of cats). Treat yourself to a nice bottle of wine and something tasty for dinner and put your feet up. A nice peaceful evening.

WtP · 14/02/2026 17:40

If I looked a bit down in the dumps, my dog used to rest his head on my legs and look up at me with his big saucer eyes, I miss those moments with him.
Tell your husband how you feel when he gets back, it might give him a bit of perspective?

HappyMummaOfOne · 14/02/2026 17:31

It’s Saturday….just like any other Saturday. Would you be sad to be left alone any other day or is it just because it’s Valentine’s Day? Because honestly valentine day doesn’t mean anything. I thought once you were married it just got ignored 😂

BeeHive909 · 14/02/2026 16:51

Well I’m joining you in the crappy valentines club. My partners also gone to the football today with his family. When we were meant to have plans for a meal and a movie. I have chocolates and crappy tv on.

Good grief, chill out! Have a large gin, it will help you unclench 😄

popcornandpotatoes · 14/02/2026 16:43

Maybe I'm weird but I absolutely love being by myself at home, even more so with my dog, so this sounds great

Your day sucks.

Why is your DD not speaking to you? Is it fixable?

As you are on your own, go and do something fun!

Open the first bottle of wine.

Yep. Best way 🍾🍾. Stroppy kids are nothing to do with this day.

Fun police alert.

Im sorry you feel low, things can feel worse on "special"days. Particularly celebrating love when you feel for whatever reason love is evading you right in this moment.
I hope things resolve with your daughter and that it isn't your last contact with your grandsons ,thing can turn around.
Get through the day any way you can.
Since my husbands death 3 yrs ago i find valentines day tough (not that my husband ever pushed the boat out,he thought it nonsense! but he did sometimes buy me flowers) . A bit of self care helps me survive it. For me its lunch with a friend,a walk on the beach and a candle lit bath.
I hope you find a way to feel easier and it will pass...
Virtual hugs.
