Worst Valentine’s Day ever

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 14/02/2026 15:33

It’s Valentine’s Day.
My daughter isn’t speaking to me.
I have just said goodbye to my grandsons (her children) for what might be the last time in a while.
And my DH (bless his cotton socks) has gone to the football in a town two hours away leaving me alone with only the dog for company until at least eight o’clock.
Please will someone tell me I have a right to be miserable, or am I supposed to invoke the wartime spirit and keep calm and carry on. I’m beginning to lose my grip on reality.

And what if the OP was a recovering alcoholic? What if she just didn’t drink?! It’s so annoying seeing people casually recommending others to use alcohol when they’re having a bad day without even knowing their circumstances.

You just know this comment will appear on the MN Tattle life thread 😂

Ps. Can you txt, write a letter? To your dd. At least then you’ve said your bit, it’s out your mind and hopefully help to heal things in the near future.

She’s blocked me on the phone and I don’t know where she’s living atm. Reluctant to use SIL or DGC as postmen.

Yes I think you're right, its inappropriate, she might be a problem drinker.

OP - do a couple of lines or smoke a joint instead.

LadyCrustybread · 14/02/2026 22:33

You can feel a bit sad. But at the end of the day it’s nothing that can’t be fixed.

We had our dog of 14 years put to sleep today - it's been the toughest Valentine's either of us have had.

Currently curled up together sobbing, cherishing our love of one another, sharing our love for our dog and feeling blessed to have the small but welcome distraction of our gorgeous children.

So sorry, I know how heartbreaking it is to lose a beloved pet 😢

Livelovebehappy · 14/02/2026 22:21

I think the fact it’s Valentines Day is irrelevant. It’s sad you’re not speaking to your dd and that you aren’t going to see your dgs for a while, but I always think Valentines Day should be what it was originally intended for - anonymous declarations of love for somewhere via a secret card. Not for the BS it’s currently marketed for - cards for wives, husbands, sons, daughters - madness. Hope your day turned out not too bad OP.

I am a recovering alcoholic and I still think you're being ridiculous.

So am I. And I think it’s ridiculous that we just offer alcohol as a solution to anyone having a hard time, whether it lighthearted or not. Shows how completely normalised it is in society which is so jarring when you’re on the other side of it.

Plus the replies about lighten up/unclench/have a large gin just further prove my point. Sad really.

Also, just because you’re a recovering alcoholic and don’t take issue with it, doesn’t mean another won’t. Everyone has different triggers, and things they are able to deal with. But you should know that, being in recovery.

I don’t think it’s too early to crack open the gin…

The Mumsnet mantra!

Haven't seen the toy boy since July last year. I wished him a Happy Valentine's (although it was his birthday yesterday, so he also got birthday wishes, which were responded to very quickly indeed).
Friend's birthday today, wished her a Happy Birthday, so far no response, which is worrying me as she is 83.
Saw my SIL creating a WhatsApp group first thing this morning with my brother's name as the title, my heart ran cold. Turns out my brother has had a heart attack and is in hospital. SIL very communicative. This afternoon I messaged my brother and got communication. He is ok-ish, but having planned surgery on Monday or sooner, if things deteriorate.
Not the best day, not especially bothered about the actual date.
I am alone and haven't been able to live in my house for over 2 years, in clinch with the insurers regarding water damage, but have come to the conclusion that I was damned if I did (no advice there) and am now damned that I didn't. No job, no income, except a very small widow's pension. I am almost past caring.

You’re a grown up and your husband is enjoying the football. Not a big deal, it’s only Valentine’s Day!

I am not being insensitive OP but valentines day is commercial and not in tune with reality.
I am truly sorry for your daughter not talking to you. Families are complicated and fall outs and uncertainties are normal for most.
My son is in prison which is crucifying me and I am permanently sad.
I am learning to take it moment by moment and painting a smile on my face for relevant people.
All about perspective.
Pour yourself a glass of something.
Take care OP

Vickim03 · 14/02/2026 21:07

That’s tough, my hubby has had to work all day and late last night plus any number of hours going forward most likely tomorrow and early mornings, late nights all of next week. He did break for an hour and we ate together. But it’s life…. Book a meal out next weekend…. It’s not really the date of the year that matters, just that you take some time to spend together.

Ponoka7 · 14/02/2026 20:35

Thankfully you've clarified that you've walked the dog, just before someone popped up and suggested that not only were you a recovering alcoholic, but you might not have legs. Even worse, that you are allergic to chocolate.
There's no easy answer to people who use the silent treatment and won't discuss things.

Im pissed off too OP. My DS is doing a Brooklyn Beckham for some reason and my exhusband is at a great event I was going to today so I didn't go as I can't stand the sight of him.
Im chilling with my cats.

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 14/02/2026 20:24

Thanks everyone. I just needed a bit of support. I have had a lovely walk with the dog - very muddy but not actually raining - I have had an ice cream, eaten lots of chocolate, drunk half a bottle of wine (fortunately I’m not an alcoholic) and watched “Airplane” so had a good laugh. Feeling much better now.
I don’t know how the problem with DD will work out. We had a bad row about three weeks ago. Last time she stopped speaking to me it lasted 3 months. Trouble is she won’t take my calls so I can’t apologise for my part in the argument.

You have a dog! that is unconditional love on valentines day

No one ever comes on MN complaining about their dog being vile to them, or abandoning them, or not speaking to them. Dogs are God’s way of apologising for humans.

Waitingfordoggo · 14/02/2026 19:12

I think it’s the recommendation of wine as an assumption that everyone likes wine or alcohol. I don’t assume everyone likes cheese or cakes just because I do so I don’t say ‘Oooh, get yourself some nice cheese to eat’ which is what I would do if I wanted to treat myself. As someone who drinks very rarely (and never wine 🤢) I notice this sort of thing a lot. It’s a default suggestion and it’s a bit annoying.

I’m another one whose favourite thing is being at home alone with the dog. Actually my husband is here and I’m mildly annoyed about it 😂

Yes this is it.

Pineapplewaves · 14/02/2026 20:04

The issues with your daughter and your grandsons ate nothing to do with Valentine’s Day, they just happened to occur on Valentines Day, which is just the 14th day of February.

Do you usually do something with your husband for Valentines Day? Did you get him a card/gift? Maybe he has something planned for when he gets back later?

Indianajet · 14/02/2026 20:00

Third Valentines Day since my husband died, we would just exchange cards and he might buy me flowers. My DIL brought me daffodils yesterday, and my dog is cuddled up next to me so things are okay.
OP, I hope you can sort things out with your daughter- that is the important thing.
