Neighbour asked me to take in her parcel whilst she went out

So yesterday I got a message from a neighbour who lives two doors down to me to ask if I would be able to take in her parcel to my house.

Her parcel had already been delivered and was left in a safe place in the side where she usually had her parcels delivered.

It was raining and she wanted me to bring it in.
I did it but was slightly annoyed as why order a parcel if your going to be out?

This is the third time this has happened now.

I am aware our mutual neighbour refuses to accept her deliveries and even has a Royal Mail Opt out sticker on her letterbox.

I have only ever spoken to her three times. All related to her deliveries. She dosent even say hello usually.

I don't want this to be a regular thing but as I am on the neighbourhood watch group chat she just messages me now.

I don't want to be seen as rude or ignorant but I don't want it becoming a regular habit.

Just say no if you don’t want to do it. You are BU about the “why order something if you’re out” nonsense though. How’s she meant to know exactly when it will arrive? Not every delivery service has tracking. I’ve just ordered something online, should I stay in now for the next two weeks in case it arrives?

MrsVBS · 14/02/2026 17:01

If you don’t want to do it, just say no and give no explanation, you owe her nothing and don’t speak to her otherwise, just speak up.

Makingadecision · 14/02/2026 16:44

You don’t always know when they are arriving. Delivery companies are notoriously unhelpful and unreliable. However if she doesn’t normally other speaking to you I would just say sorry I can’t and she will stop asking.

Boomer55 · 14/02/2026 16:36

It’s just a neighbourly thing to do. She might do the same for you one day. No need for a drama. 🙄

VioletandMauve · 14/02/2026 16:22

For me the thing that would really annoy me is that as the OP has said the neighbour doesn’t usually even say hello. No way would I bring in her parcels in as that’s so rude.

MsGreying · 14/02/2026 16:17

No.

It's a complete sentence.

ittakes2 · 14/02/2026 16:16

She’s out …. Say you are out too ask someone else

Friendlygingercat · 14/02/2026 15:40

Better still dont give your number to your neighbours. Mine dont even know my name.

thepariscrimefiles · 14/02/2026 15:38

As your neighbour isn't very nice, I wouldn't bother. As it isn't just letting the courier deliver it to your address because it's already been delivered to her safe place, you'd have to go out in the pouring rain to collect it which will be a right faff.

03cg73 · 14/02/2026 15:38

Is this really something people get annoyed about? I just thought it was normal to take in neighbours parcels for them as they do for me?

I’ve had many of these “are you in? It’s pissing down and Evri have left my parcel at the side door” messages from my next door neighbour. She’s also taken stuff in for me without me having to ask her. Especially if she notices it’s Amazon because the cardboard gets soaked through. She just takes it and messages me to let me know she has it

this is not something I could ever imaging being annoyed about

YorkshireGoldie · 14/02/2026 15:37

i only really like to order from websites when I know what day it’s going to be delivered so I’ll be home. However daughter has asked for a couple of birthday presents from websites which were royal mail delivery and they both came on days where I wasn’t there. Annoying.

itw not always possible to get things delivered when you know you will be home. I think yesterday I would have taken in the delivery for the neighbour as it was absolutely terrential

Economicsday · 14/02/2026 15:34

Mute her number and simply ignore.
She's a user.

FeliciaFancybottom · 14/02/2026 15:32

We keep having this exact same thread. Is there a parcel troll in our midst 🤔

Crikey, you'd hate me. I often call my own cat much worse than that. He is well loved and looked after but he still behaves like an utter twat. I really don't think I have wounded his poor little cat soul. He seems pretty satisfied with his life, biting people's ankles, depositing half dead rodents all over the place, knocking things of shelves, drinking from anything but his water bowl.

You can say what you like about your own animals though.

It's a bit like how you're the only one allowed to be mean to your siblings. No one else is and will get all manners of hell rained down if they do.

'Why order a parcel if you're going to be out?' is a bit of an odd line of reasoning.
Can't you just say yes if you are ok to take her parcels in, no if you're not?

It's also assuming you're in control of parcel delivery! Most parcels I order say 3-5 days. Am I expected to not leave the house for that entire time?

The nicer you are to people the nicer they feel they should be back. Kindness is infectious.

The nicer you are to people the more you get the piss taken out of your kindness.

She called it ugly and scary looking because he is a black cat, not a very nice thing to say about an innocent animal.

Are you new to life? Heard the phrase CF?

LoveWFH · 14/02/2026 15:26

She can rearrange the delivery for when she is home.

are you taking the piss?
You don't like her because she hurt your cats feelings?!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

DisappearingGirl · 14/02/2026 15:16

If I was in I would just take in the parcel. If I was out I would say sorry I am out. I also don't get the big deal about parcels on here, unless someone is having 10 deliveries per day or something!

FryingPam · 14/02/2026 15:12

You don’t get much choice for a delivery slot, but you could just ignore the message and - if you want to stay on good terms- reply ‘sorry didn’t read it in time’ in the evening. Or ignore, if you’re not interested in maintaining a relationship. But my neighbours and I do accept parcels for each other, it’s not that big a deal I think.

Well that's not true

CandiedPrincess · 14/02/2026 15:08

I'd really struggle to get upset over this. I often ask a neighbour to look out for a parcel and vice versa. How much effort is it really?
