Men commit 99% of all rapes and sexual assaults.

Men (and young men) commit 95-98% of school shootings.

Men commit 90% of all violent crime in the UK.

These are not female crimes, and should never, ever be reported - or recorded - as such. It can safely be assumed in any of the above circumstances that a male person was the perpetrator.

Don’t be ridiculous. I’m in my late 50s with a daughter in her 20s and multiple other female family members. None of us have been flashed at because it’s only a very small percentage of the population that commit these crimes.

So so bad and damaging trying to normalise this type of behaviour. It isn’t normal or common male behaviour.

No one is normalising it. Rather the opposite.

One man who flashes on a train can impact 50 other women in the carriage. One man out in public with a wife and kids covered in bruises impacts every other woman who sees them. (I've never forgotten a child I saw with a clearly abusive father at a supermarket till and that was 50 years ago.) One woman with a third black eye this year who goes into work mumbling about the tripping over the dog impacts every female in that office. And so on.

I don't think I know any woman who hasn't either been a victim of or seen first hand another woman who was a victim of male aggression.

I don't believe the percentage of perpetrators is anywhere near as tiny as is being suggested, either.

How is it? The population is split 50:50 male female with only a tiny percentage of men committing these crimes. They’d have to be zooming around all over the place spending every minute of every day committing violence.

How many people are directly impacted by a murder?

Family
Friends
NdN not feeling safe
Medical and other first responders
Investigation teams
The court and prison staff
The jury who need to see and understand what happened

I am sure there are more unlisted
But what would be the minimum headcount from 1 act of violence?

BringonSpringnowplease · 15/02/2026 12:39

You might want to edit that, CurlewKate!

CurlewKate · 15/02/2026 12:38

I hope that my son and yours are going to be violent, or rapists. HOWEVER they are growing up in a society that condones misogynist and violent behaviour from men. It’s up to our sons to be the generation that makes it unacceptable. The generation that challenges their peers.

It’s the same small percentage of men doing it!

Doesn't matter. The impact matters. Acknowledging the impact so we can frame better policy is something both men and women should be interested in.
Not saving men from feeling offended.

Guess the MET must be wrong then.

I used to volunteer with Southall Black Sisters. Huge unreported domestic violence in the Asian community. Improving as women get more educated and financially independent, but still there.

And as for the title- how arrogant and condescending can you get.

Boomer55 · 15/02/2026 12:04

I used to work in Child Protection and I know how many women colluded with abusive men, and abused and neglected their kids.

Yes, only biological man can rape, of course, but women can be just as evil.

ToughC00kie · 15/02/2026 12:02

Imdunfer · 15/02/2026 11:55

I've said this before and it's been ignored by the NAMALT assembly.

It's another fact that although the number of men committing these crimes may be a tiny percentage of the male population, the percentage of women who have experienced or witnessed these crimes is huge.

It's the impact that's important, not the number of perpetrators.

ToughC00kie · 15/02/2026 09:55

Let’s keep this into perspective shall we.

Only 3.1% of men commit violent crime and although men offend more than women it’s often a repeat-offending group of males, rather than a large portion of the general male population. While men are more likely to be perpetrators of violence, they are also more likely to be victims of violent crime committed by strangers.

In short, the overwhelming majority of men are NOT perpetrators of violent crime.

So let’s remember that before we write off boys and men in our lives.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 15/02/2026 11:51

Our sons need to know that some of their peers are dangerous, to them and to others. They need to recognise bad behaviour and push back against it, and report it. At the moment, they may distance themselves from it (so like my DH, believe it’s rare as they automatically avoid it) or they may tolerate it as ‘banter’ that they are too evolved to engage in.

Women are at risk in their own homes because that’s where the privacy to commit crime is.

At the moment, we overlook the stats on male violence and the particular vulnerability of children and women. It needs to be understood and baked in to safeguarding. Women should have safe spaces. Particularly vulnerable women should be given more than usual protection- no unsupervised male carers.

Imdunfer · 15/02/2026 11:51

KillTheTurkey · 15/02/2026 09:08

Our sons aren’t generally speaking these people, though.

They are the children of terrible drug-addicted families, of hidden abuse, of unmet emotional and educational needs, of macho, abusive fathers, of undiagnosed ND and MH-related issues. These stats are obviously harder to dig into, but it is fairly straightforward to predict which boys are diverging from the others fairly early. Sadly, no amount of institutional help (schools, social services, health services) can significantly change outcomes for children who are on a path to a life of crime.

You go a very long way to try and convince yourself that male violence isn't innate and tightly bound to testosterone levels.

They start from a base of innate higher levels of aggression and culture trains it out of them. Some are less easy to train than others because of psychopathic or sociopathic traits. Some, but only some, are as you say damaged in some way.

Violent men aren't created, it's the other way around. Non violent men are created by our culture.

Violent men can come from any background.

TheMorgenmuffel · 15/02/2026 11:06

Are people just incapable of understanding that the words

The majority of violent and sexual crimes are committed by men

Is NOT the same thing as

the majority of men commit violent and sexual crimes?

Men don't need us leaping to their defence, they aren't being attacked by rabid killer facts trying to rip their throats out. It's ok to accept statistics.

No men were harmed in the stating of these facts.

ToughC00kie · 15/02/2026 10:18

I know!!!

And actually this all men are violent crap does so much more normalising damage. It kind of says men are violent and likely to commit violent crime by default so it’s kind of natural. They’re not. Only 3 % are.

Absolutely nobody has said “All men are violent” s
Saying this shows a complete misunderstanding of a serious issue. No, all men are violent. But almost all violence is committed by men. There is a profound difference.

RichardOnslowRoper · 15/02/2026 10:31

The Met police acknowledging violence against women and girls. Do they also 'hate men'? Are they also writing boys off?
https://www.met.police.uk/police-forces/metropolitan-police/areas/about-us/about-the-met/vawg-action-plan-summary/overview-action-plan/

And, of course, we know how misogynist the Met is.

Not a SINGLE person on this thread had said all men are violent. Personally, I have said male violence is a serious problem This is a problem acknowledged by the Met Police itself.

How do you know which are the 3%? Also most domestic violence and rape goes unreported, as you should know.

Oh gee, another "We hate men" Mumsnet thread. It's at least 11 hours since I clicked on one. Am kind of confused why MNHQ hasn't created a "We hate men" topic, would be so popular, could really concentrate the vitriol.

You could just click on the threads by women saying how much they love their husbands or the men who fix their cars? Plenty of those.

RichardOnslowRoper · 15/02/2026 10:17

Thattimenow · 15/02/2026 10:11

Do you actually tell your daughter “be wary of men” @RichardOnslowRoper ?

Yes. She has had reason to be. Plenty of drink spiking and date rape in London unis. All goes unreported because the girls are too ashamed.

We are also brown.
And she has had racist abuse too from football louts on trains, when travelling alone. I won't go into her experiences when travelling.

Roystonv · 15/02/2026 10:16

I admit that I have not read the whole thread but so far I am appalled at the sniping, lack of knowledge and misinterpretation. I really thought most women knew by now the start, progression and (hopefully) ending of the trans supremacy over all our lives in the UK for the last few years. The truth must be told and masking of crimes by men cannot be allowed. It is a lie and one that can have serious repercussions.
