Matching dresses for a wedding, tacky or not?

Looking for opinions as I haven't yet decided what to dress my 2 DDs in! Have a wedding to attend this year, everyone invited etc. 2 DDs, will be 3 and 1 at time of wedding. Is it cute or tacky to wear matching dresses?! I don't normally like matchy matchy clothes and think it looks quite tacky but for a wedding in feel its a bit different. (They aren't flower girls, just regular guests)

Either way I will not be spending £100s on dresses for them and will probably get something on Vinted or from Next or M&S or similar price range, certainly not shelling out for something very expensive for a one day event that they'll inevitably get covered in food anyway 😂

I dress my DC in matching outfits all the time, they like to be dressed the same. I remember DM dressing me and my two sisters in matching Mothercare dresses for a wedding once, we all looked lovely.

Nobody is going to think that a 1 and 3 year old wearing the same dress are bridesmaids if they are wearing normal dresses. Any flower girls/bridesmaids would be dressed in proper bridesmaids dresses surely, and they’ll also have flowers.

Might be worth checking with the bride. My 5 and 8 year olds will be wearing matching dresses to a wedding soon as they saw the same one in the shop and were both desperate to have it, but I didn’t buy it until I’d sent photos to the bride in case it made them look too much like bridesmaids. (She was fine with it but said she did appreciate me checking.)

Next or M&S may have ranges where you could get similar things which would be cute but without being absolutely matching which could look too flower girly.

Matching clothes is yuck unless maybe if they are twins. I have a sister in law who still matches her 8 and 11 year old. Makes me feel so sorry for the 11 year old as there’s such a diff between that tween age clothing and an 8 year old. Awful.

Isadora2007 · 12/02/2026 09:10

Tacky, sorry. Maybe same dresses in different colours? Though personally unless a wee one is a confident Walker I hate seeing them in dresses as it seems so uncomfortable to be carried in a dress and try to stand up or crawl etc. Always makes me feel that females are at a disadvantage right from the word go in terms of our looks being prioritised over our comfort. So a cute play suit type outfit for the baby and a dress for the older one might be a refreshing option!

Perhaps get the 1 year old from Vinted and let 3 year old choose her dress from next or M&S

I don't think it's a problem at that age as long as you avoid dresses that look like flower girl dresses. Don't use the colour scheme etc.
That sounds like a tiring day for you!!

Manchestergal003 · 12/02/2026 09:09

If you’re buying off Vinted anyway then just get separate dresses. I don’t think it’s tacky to match children’s outfits from time to time to be honest, and I wouldn’t mind your children coming in same dresses to my wedding.

Hmmm. Let the baby be the baby and older DD have some choice. I never found baby clothes were the same as 3 year old clothes. Sounds like fun so fine 3 year old a limited choice and you definitely don’t have to spend much.

I think it would be cute, but I think the might be mistaken as being part of the bridal party.

If they match I think people could assume they’re bridesmaids. I wouldn’t personally

Yeah it would run this risk
