I might take dd to the cinema to see and then to Nando’s and to a bakery for a cupcake. Will need to find a flower shop to buy her one red rose

I hate that it’s on a Saturday, I really don’t wanna see young teens out on dates while I’m chronically single 😂

will you do anything? No judgement if not, it’s just me and dd so I like to do this stuff

plus, when someone’s son decides to take her out when she’s older, she won’t be thrilled by literally the bare minimum!!

edit to see either Gaby’s dolls house, zootropolis 2 or The Goat (kids cartoon) - not sure which 🤷‍♀️

I am v close to my young adult kids but they are not my husband. I think it’s strange to give your children cards and VD presents. But not really creepy. I don’t think parents are truly entertaining a romantic relationship with their kids, thankfully.

Carycach4 · 12/02/2026 05:56

Creepy AF!
Valentines day celebrates romantic love

mynamesaretaken · 12/02/2026 05:34

Nothing, it's a day for couples and at the teen age also for friends. DD makes cards for her friends, I don't think it's bad, but I wouldn't want her to do anything for us.

Our dog has bought our daughter a card with a picture of her (the dog) on and a box of chocolates. I am a marketer's dream!

Fuck me, your dog must be a genius to trot off to the shops and do all that.

The ones around here just shit everywhere and bark from dawn till dusk.

Is this a new thing? Valentine’s Day used to be for couples.

It's a weird thing

mumofoneAloneandwell · 11/02/2026 20:20

😂 why not? Has he pissed you off?

Because it’s just a hallmark card day. I’m not wasting a fiver on a corny card just as a tick box exercise for a man or anyone

Zanatdy · 12/02/2026 04:14

I have 3 DC, nearly all adults now and I have never done anything for valentines day. In my opinion it’s for couples, and you show your love for your DC in other ways, and they get plenty of stuff / treats. My friend does a big basket and I find it very OTT and yes it is each to their own, but frustrating when it becomes a new expected thing and young kids can’t understand why their friend got lots of gifts and a day out for valentines and they did not.

BananasAreForever · 12/02/2026 03:45

I like any excuse to do something special for dc but wouldn't do valentine's day, maybe because mine is a boy and would just be totally embarrassed by his mum getting him a card or treat on valentine's day when he's 10/11. He would hide in his room and not come out or something.

Focussingonme · 12/02/2026 03:38

There are some utter bores on here. It's a fun day and they see the stuff in the shops, make cards and nursery and are having a "wear what you love day" at school so I see no issue in celebrating a little at home - bringing a little joy and excitement to life is not a bad thing in my book.

I have got a card for each of them and a bag of Haribo heartthrobs. That would usually be all but I did see some cute heart hair grips in Sainsbury's so got them a set each too. Making them feel special and re-affirming love is positive.

We will be doing pancake day and Chinese new year next week too despite not being Christian or Chinese!!

WinnerWinnerChickenDinnner · 12/02/2026 02:59

I make cupcakes with hearts on them nothing else.

Funny you ask I have just had this conversation with my DH who told
me not to buy the outfit I was planning on buying my DD for Valentine’s Day because it will set a president!! I didn’t see the big deal initially but do sort of understand what he means. I got her a card and a little chocolate lollipop! I know she has made us cards so I think it’s nice

That is funny but presumably he meant to say 'precedent' rather than 'president'!

Whatever he meant, a card and a chocolate lollipop sounds perfect. We are doing the same. I think it's lovely for children to be involved. Our son will probably reach an age where getting a Valentines card from Mum will be mortifying, so I'm going to make the most of it while I can!

Peridoteage · 11/02/2026 21:12

Nothing lol? Dh and i don't bother with valentines day. I want to be appreciated every day not just on 14th feb & he doesn't need to spend money to do it.

Why does doing something for Valentines equate to not being appreciated every day? DH and I have been married 36 years,we have always celebrated Valentines and always will. Doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate each other the rest of the time.

Ghht · 12/02/2026 00:21

I don’t do anything for my kids as I see it as a romantic celebration and the love for my kids doesn’t really fit into that (obviously). I also don’t really see it as a “kids day” if that makes sense. However, if you enjoy it then crack on and use it as an excuse to spend some lovely time with your child.

Thepossibility · 12/02/2026 00:12

No

Sortofballs · 11/02/2026 23:58

It’s an American thing to extend Valentine’s Day to all and sundry I think.

So as a Brit I say bah humbug to that!

Travellingatthespeedoflight · 11/02/2026 23:44

I am in the minority but have got a card and chocolate heart lolly for each of my dc (5,5 and 3). I am very much in the celebrate all the small things camp, you only live once.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 11/02/2026 23:41

Crochetandtea · 11/02/2026 22:24

No judgement ? I’m not doing nor have I ever done something romantic with my children. Children shouldn’t be adored the way some parents seem to adore them nowadays.
I don’t celebrate it with my husband either .

What do you mean ‘children shouldn’t be adored’? That’s a very odd statement. Surely all children should be adored by their parents.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/02/2026 23:40

My mother gave us a valentine card and chocolate sweet from a secret admirer, 40 years ago.

DirtyBird · 11/02/2026 23:39

I think it’s sweet! My coworker told me that her DM gave her a Valentine’s Day basket until her mom passed away a few years ago and my coworker is in her 40s. I think it’s sweet and regret not doing something for my DD.

Saz12 · 11/02/2026 23:39

Teen DD is having 4 friends round, which seems to involve pyjamas, pizza, and laughter. Nothing "themed", it's just an excuse to have a fun night with her mates, which is fine by me. So my Valentines gift to her will be staying out of her room & slinging pizza in the oven.

JustGiveMeReason · 11/02/2026 23:38

Chameleonchange · 11/02/2026 20:09

People aren't being harsh.

It's just that a lot of us don't understand why a day which traditionally is associated with romantic love should be morphed into a celebration for children. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Agree with this

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 11/02/2026 23:36

I’ve not read the full thread but just looked at the poll. There was a similar thread last year with replies very similar to the first ones I’ve seen on here and in line with the voting.

I think it’s nice you are doing something fun with your DD, OP. I think in the US, Valentines is more of a general celebration so no reason why you can’t do this too.

My DC is grown up and presumably will spend valentines with his partner, DH and I will have a meal out - but only because we are away at the moment, we wouldn’t bother at home.

Beesandhoney123 · 11/02/2026 23:35

God no. Its for lovers. I don't want my dc thinking its for kids.
They can admire the flowers dh gets me, instead and just once it's not about them:)

If I was single, I'd ignore it, but still do nice things. Not valentines related ie cards and teddies.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/02/2026 23:34

I don’t go over the top, I buy them a chocolate rose every year.
I don’t do cards.

I assumed you meant for my adult children who might need a babysitter to enable them to enjoy a romantic evening. I will enjoy a nice meal with my husband!
