From BBC news

He says police had attended the residence on multiple occasions over the past several years, dealing with mental health concerns of the suspect.

The suspect was apprehended on different occasions for assessment and follow-up under the Mental Health Act, he tells the press.

Asked if any of the interactions the suspect had with police had anything to do with weapons, McDonald replies "yes".

The deputy commissioner says police have attended the residence in the past, approximately two years ago, where firearms were seized under the criminal code. He adds that the lawful owner of those firearms petitioned for them to be returned, and they were.

There's questions that need answering there. Like why was nothing done after several police visits citing mental health, and with the interactions having to do with weapons? And the weapons given back?!? He might not have been the lawful owner but come on, they knew about him.

Because if the answer is "because trans" then in an ideal world there'd be outrage. But I suspect it'll be swept under the carpet, again. Talk of not blaming the whole community, again. Saying just about anything to avoid facing the reasons head on.

Those poor victims 😢

Well, yes. He shot them.

I meant over preceding years.

There were “multiple mental health police interventions” apparently. There’s also a posting he made of himself at a shooting range on a Reddit sub for trans people with guns.

I absolutely agree with you that we should be questioning and considering all the evidence on gender affirming care, and it's a complex issue. My understanding is that the alleged shooter had not received any hormone treatment though.

Someone on X has found his Reddit posts and he reported being suicidal at 15 because he was still waiting for an appt to get on hormones. He was 18 when he murdered children, who knows if he’d accessed hormones over that 3 year period, but he wanted to.

Unsurprisingly, he was into anime as well

ETA : and yes, it’s the same person as identified formally

Serious mental health and legal failings especially in regards to returning the confiscated firearms!

It is a disgrace that the police have described this boy as female.

This is where this ideology leads to. The law in Canada forces the police to mis sex him.

Mentally ill boys and men who should be treated for mental health issues put on experimental drugs and told they are female.

If he had not shot himself he would be incarcerated in a women's prison.

Agree. And this is why boys/men insisting they are women should be carefully treated and counselled for their clear mental health issues.

We don't aid & abet anorexics in their delusion that they're overweight. Neither do we agree with Great Uncle Harold that he is Napolean.

Killer confirmed as 18-year-old Jesse van Rootselaar. The police describe the individual as female and say there is a history of police attendance at the family residence, with some calls related to mental illness. It is not clear if the killer was transgender as has been claimed. Previous reports identified a transgender individual named Jesse Strang as the shooter. It is not clear if this is the same person or if the earlier reports were incorrect.

Edited

Correction - the police say the subject identified as female and was transgender, having been born male.

Just like the Kevin Vermette shooting the community will know the truth.
I pray for the injured and the community.

Culturally FN believe in being Two Spirited so that may pose a problem should the killer be FN.

Not really. Most FN recognise that 2S was appropriated as a version of Trans in the late 90's. 2S was never 'a born in the wrong body' or T identity. And no, he is not FN anyway. He was a hunting/gun enthusiast though, knew his way around a rifle.

BreakingBroken · 11/02/2026 18:50

and Tumbler Ridge is not Toronto. Small remote communities never have the mental health support they deserve. I’m surprised to read they have 5 RCMP stationed there with multiple communities within 1 hr drive.
So many in the community would be hunters so guns available. I don’t know anyone whose guns are not kept in a safe with trigger locks, but a 17yr old would know how to get around that.

the initial description given in a panic.

It hasn't been that for quite a while now, though. That's the issue.

When, in your view, is the appropriate time to state that criminals should be described accurately and their crimes recorded and reported accurately? If people just did that from the start as standard, we wouldn't need to discuss it.

I would say, once it's clear that the correct criminal has been identified. Even though this may seem completely clear-cut, it still needs to be investigated by the Canadian police.

Today is for the victims and the community.
It really wouldn’t be right to focus too much on the assailant, the initial description given in a panic. The officer that read from a script was clearly struggling and unaccustomed to TV media.
JT is no longer the PM and I believe Amy Hamm’s nursing case is going to the Supreme Court.

Rather baffled as to why someone would say Canada and America are "the same" due to "both being America". Mexico is also on the continent of North America - are they the same culturally too?! I think not.

It[s not like America is one homogeneous blob either. Texas is not Vermont is not Alaska is not Hawaii.

Its killer not assailant.

There is no reason to give that killer a softer term.

Set out to kill and killed.

Why on Earth haven't the authorities described the shooter as 'white male, brown hair, wearing a blue dress'. Completely clear, accurate and factual.

Described them when? They haven't described anything apart from a local warning when the shooter was still active and they did not know the killer's identity. They don't need to issue a physical description (your use of haven't seeming to suggest a timeframe of between the shooting and now) as the suspect is dead.

Because. It. Is. Canada.

Canada has gender self ID. Canada is fully captured. Except maybe Alberta.
