I do understand main stream UK culture is not familar with hunting or need for protection from wildlife and tends to be very anti guns but I image the Candian population including authorities may want to explore at what point do you step in with guns in house and mental health issues.

Reading this is does look like questions are being asked about guns and mental health support.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce8w95knp55o
Police said they had attended the suspect's family home on multiple occasions over the past several years, with some calls related to mental health concerns.
...

Van Rootselaar was known to police, and "we've begun the process of reaching out to" the public health care system to "understand what interactions may have taken place," British Columbia Premier David Eby told a news conference outside the Tumbler Ridge town hall late on Wednesday evening.
The suspect previously had a valid gun licence that had since lapsed, McDonald said.
Police said Van Rootselaar had dropped out of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School four years ago.

A memorial of candles and flowers are laid at a vigil for victims of a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada.

Police identify 18-year-old as suspect in Tumbler Ridge shootings

A candlelit vigil was held on Wednesday night in the remote British Columbia town where six people were killed and dozens injured.

Apparently, this guy used to post on social media about shooting and self reliance. His mother posted about him doing it too.

The 'transguns' sub-reddit temporarily suspended its board to remove this teenagers posts. There is speculation that he was one of the moderating team on that sub-reddit.

Hummm... thats a police line of inquiry which reddit need to manage.

I notice this morning the BBC's story about police identify killer that the "male who identifies as a woman" bit has been moved from quite close to the start of the article to 10 paragraphs down about an hour ago. No she/her thank goodness, but down the truth goes.

Not even in the headlines on the BBC news channel anymore.

Are modified handguns much use in seeing off marauding bears?

Tbf if you are under attack and by some miracle still had the capacity to engage a firearm a handgun is the better choice than a long barrel.
Bears are Usain Bolt fast or faster shooting something running at you and getting a kill shot is iffy. You want to hurt it enough that it will stop trying to kill you.

I wonder whether merchandise like this will start disappearing. And whether the signs at protests that demand that people 'arm trans people' or 'arm the dolls' will now disappear.

These do not help people with already poor mental health, I would think.

Wot?

the editor was off getting coffee when the intern pressed upload or copy/paste/upload

It is unprofessional and clearly whoever originally wrote that placed the killer in the classification "victim" to have moved from killers/shooters/suspects mother

It's unprofessional - agreed. But it was clearly an error and its now been corrected in the article.

There’s having some appropriately-stored hunting paraphernalia and buying your unstable teen weapons.

Indeed.

The problem in Canada is that no professional councellor could have sat down and discussed his mental health or they would risk being ostracised, kicked out of their professional organisation and lose their job and get 10 years of harassment, look what happened to Jordan Peterson.

So all you have is affirmation and more affirmation. What he wants he gets or else.

There are lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo and hippos in Africa, but when I lived there I did not have a house full of guns....

So you did not hunt nor target shoot nor kill off predatory animals which risked your livelyhood.

No idea, I expect it would be a better bet than no gun at all. I was being facetous about the bears which obviously needs explaining on here.

You know, the ignorance about other cultures and how they live is always interesting on here. Yes other countries particularly in rural areas have weapons. They get to know their weapons and probably buy other weapons and might well modify their weapons. Particularly if they have access to the internet and a huge lack of engagement with reality.

I have been clear I thought it was a general info newsy thread.

No doubt if I did start another it would be likewise taken over.

You could always give it a try.

By stating you did not want to focus in the killer or name the killer etc you can ask MN to remove posts which derail your thread.

You then just need to report the posts as a derail and MN will decide on which posts remain on your thread

If you were still not happy you could email MN directly and discuss why you wanted the thread to progress along a fixed path.

You may not have noticed but the OP wants to explore why the State and MSM is pushing the agenda of transgenderism

When it created a public safety risk
a) the police already knew he was male and had killed his mother and stepbrother
b) the police has risk assessed that there could have been more than one killer

Then even after the facts are clear the reports still claim the killer was not male by using terms such as woman/female/she/her

I live in rural France and every farmer here will have a house full of guns. I don't personally but you really seem surprised that people who live in the middle of nowhere do.

MaturingCheeseball · 12/02/2026 10:58

I read that there was a police intervention with the guns - but the family had them returned according to “rights” legislation.

I can only imagine what it must be like to have a child who is clearly, well, dangerously mad. But as with the Southport killer and a school shooter in, was it, Maine? the parent is imo absolutely on the blame sheet if they allow that child to have weapons or, still worse, purchase them for the child.

Probably more…. Stop talking about the issues behind this?

It could have been morbid speculation.

But the whine and lack of links suggests it was a bad wimmn should stay off AIBU and not notice that Canada is reporting a male killer as being female.

Or that Canada has decided that the word female includes humans with penis which is unscientific political ideology.

But yep lets all examine how MH may interact with mass killing but ignore how MH interacts with transgenderism ....

Absolutely, that's the real motivation behind the pious scolding that posters should be focusing (ONLY!!) on how tragic it is for the victims.

Or discussing only the motivations that some people want to discuss, without any depth of discussion about some aspects of the background of the shooter....

They want to read about the 'motivation' of the shooter but only from certain aspects.

Helleofabore · 12/02/2026 10:39

And yet, people are discussing what is being reported in the news....

FFS over two threads there are links to news reports from around the fucking world about this incident. It is all there to read and discuss as anyone on the threads wishes to.
