The initial reports said the killer was female and a woman, but there are now reports that he was a 17 year old man?

What is going on?

I think the initial reports were when the shooting was still active. If you're warning people you're going to give a description corresponding with what they might see. Eg "suspect is female, dark hair. Wearing a dress" rather than "not sure if it's a male or female, they're in a dress, best you go up and take a close look to check if they are really male"

That it’ll be”someone else’s fault” that the poor ‘woman in a dress’ was driven to it by the awful females in their life not accepting their true self, and Canada’s legal and political system will support this, and blame females for males crimes.

Rather than ‘mentally distressed young man doesn’t get the mentally health support he needs but is told living as a woman will solve all his issues’ .

I agree that the suspicion is high that this person was a man/ boy, ( especially as they wore a dress!) but it’s not been confirmed yet.

No, and the BBC said the "gender" of the person was not known. I hadn't thought of it until I saw that, and the clothing description.

If it does turn out to be a man who says he's a woman, it'll be interesting to see which news outlets say he's a woman and who tells the truth. Canada is a nuthouse for gender ideology.

It's absolutely horrifying, whoever is responsible. Really dreadful.

Edited

It takes the focus off of this horrible tragedy as everyone is now scratching their head. News should be transparent. Just say he’s a transwoman.

Apparently this is quite a small town, only 2,400 people, so almost everyone will be affected by this to varying degrees. It’s truly awful.

Some of the reporting may be to keep the victims more prominent than the shooter. I think the aim is to diminish the risk of copycat notoriety.

That's a tiny school and community, if I'm reading it right, and a huge proportion of students lost.

LesbianNana · 11/02/2026 07:38

Yup. Not our crimes. It’s disgraceful that the police are calling this man a female. Mustn’t misgender the mass child murderer! Reddit Canada forum has been deleting comments like crazy and disallowed anyone from posting his identity.

The individual alleged to be the shooter in the deadly attack at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia has been identified by a close family member as Jesse Strang, according to information obtained by Juno News.

Juno News spoke directly with Russell G. Strang, Jesse Strang’s uncle, who confirmed Jesse was transgender and responsible for the shooting that left 10 people dead, including the suspect. A public YouTube account believed to be owned by Jesse features the transgender flag and uses “she/her” pronouns.

Do they often describe what a murderer was wearing when they murdered people?

Oh right. It's that bad there now is it. Such a shame, I loved Canada. Seems you can't get away from the madness.

It is tragic news, but I had just read about this and my first thought was - a ‘female shooter’? Women don’t carry out mass shootings.

It is completely wrong to not report these things accurately.

Yes me too. It’s obviously a man.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 11/02/2026 07:32

Lots of you saying what I thought as soon as I read the reports. What a horrendous thing to happen. My thoughts are with all those affected.

HairyToity · 11/02/2026 07:24

She / he could well have brought the guns in illegally from the USA.

A poster on social media says that she has seen the probable mother's Facebook page and that the family "had a safe full of guns at home".

Dannexe · 11/02/2026 07:20

I don’t generally look at Fox News for obvious (right wing fascist) reasons but they have used the phrase “gunman” in their headline before going on to use the phrase “female in a dress” in quotation marks

TinyTear · 11/02/2026 07:19

A woman would wear practical clothes like trousers if going on a spree in my opinion. Cosplayers would wear flowy dresses

PersephoneParlormaid · 11/02/2026 07:18

So it’s a bloke in a frock. Not a woman or a female crime.

MerryGuide · 11/02/2026 07:04

So very tragic, and unusual for canada surely.
Agree the wording seems strange, BBC rolling coverage starts with the dressing description then soon move to putting that in "xxx"

Ninerainbows · 11/02/2026 06:58

How awful. It's so remote too - no hospital, 3 hours to a major city and an hour to another town. All they have is a clinic.

Chersfrozenface · 11/02/2026 06:50

EleanorReally · 11/02/2026 06:43

Female was unusual terminology

"Female" is used rather than "woman" when age is a factor, I think.

It may be relevant that in North America mass shootings in schools are overwhelmingly committed by males between 13 and 18 years old.

NotTerfNorCis · 11/02/2026 06:43

My very first thought was, 'was this really a woman'.

Rumours on social media say not.

Chersfrozenface · 11/02/2026 06:42

EleanorReally · 11/02/2026 06:38

they just said Female on the news

And?

This is in Canada, where they call trans identified men "female".

Plenty of the media in the UK call the likes of Scarlet Blake, male murderer, "she", for that matter.

Gabbycat245 · 11/02/2026 06:41

Such awful news 😢 but, as @BurnTheWholeThingDownsays, these are not women's crimes.
