To be confused by 'high earners' complaining about taxes?

tutuland · 10/02/2026 18:25

So high earners pay lots of tax. The top 20% pay for 70% or whatever the numbers are.

But (beyond printing more money) isn't the money there high income people make just coming from the paying public? No matter who you work for, your company's profit is just an accumulation of normal people paying for things.

So ultimately, isn't it all our money anyway? Just beacuse the game is rigged and you get paid 400K for management whatever, it doesn't mean you're more deserving of that money than anyone.

500k + net immigration a year largely to fill unskilled roles whilst having 9 million economically inactive working age people in the UK tells me that.

Yes the job market is bad now, perhaps we should increase taxes even further to improve it eh?

Edited

What is the break down of those 9 million people who are actively looking for work? Because a lot of that figure is sick/disabled and people with caring responsibilities.

There are currently 734,000 job vacancies right now. There will always be millions out of work, because there is not enough work.

Maybe she had a lot of support. Maybe she worked hard to build up the confidence to do it. She said she was looking for work anyway. People can be between jobs.

When I was young people were between jobs or did the work they could find. Now people feel they should have choice even if they don't have the skills.

Maybe fixing potholes, delivery driver, being a carer, stacking shelves or waitressing makers her anxious and speaking on national TV and claiming benefits doesn’t?

Did she say any of that? She didn't say anything about what jobs she was applying for. Why are you making stuff up?
Really weird take on such jobs when a few posters on here "question the life choices" of someone working for NMW.

If someone has never cleared £25k/pa in their entire adult life I'd seriously wonder about the choices they made that led up to this (barring disabilities or major life catastrophes). One of the reasons I've always hammered into my kids the need to do well at school - was what a previous poster said. They seem to look down on poorly paid jobs and think such jobs are beneath their kids.

Who has said that? Because it certainly was not the lady on Question Time.
Do you know how bad the job market is right now?

It is odd to be so anxious that you can appear on national tv but now work.

but we cannot run the country on fresh air ? plus society should not rely on cheap labour otherwise why did we get rid of slavery ?

Edited

How is over a quarter of the UK’s billionaires leaving in a year helping the UK not rely on cheaper labour?
Unfortunately the U.K. is out of road, no room for additional borrowing or mass immigration to do the jobs people don’t want do anymore, It’s very clear that it’s only a matter of time before the free money will have to stop and people will simply have to do the jobs they deem beneath them, with or without anxiety/ADHD/body dismorphia. The country (tax payers) simply can’t afford to carry these people anymore,

The lady on Question Time was actually job hunting. I suggest you go and rewatch it. She said it was hard looking for work when you have anxiety. And she did not deride the "rich" or even mention taxes at all.
So stop making shit up.

This is sadly true. My DB is a private wealth management consultant. He's seeing so many of his clients leaving the UK.

True. Despite DH paying eye watering rates of tax we now use a private GP because it's impossible to get an appointment at our local surgery. Our local bus routes have been reduced to next to nothing. We have so many long standing pot holes that it's beyond a joke. Our local library barely opens and likely won't last the year.

And then there was that very vocal young woman, on Question Time, recently who was apparently incapable of working because 'of anxiety' and yet clearly revelled in appearing on national TV. And had the audacity to deride 'the rich' for not paying more FFS. Showing so much contempt for the very people who's taxes fund her benefits.

Precisely. How dare I have worked 80 hours a week for years and how dare I resent giving half my wage to the government especially when I use all private facilities. Jealousy is so ugly.

We’re down 55 billionaires this year in the U.K. and we have 156 left, those 156 pay direct taxes totalling around 10 billion a year. That’s more than twice the income tax from Birmingham. We don’t get anything from the 55 who left.

This is sadly true. My DB is a private wealth management consultant. He's seeing so many of his clients leaving the UK.

Oldwmn · 15/02/2026 11:53

ThisWittySquid · 14/02/2026 22:23

Why should they not get upset about it? They pay an exuberant amount of tax and receive very little in return. They get attacked for "daring" to do well in life. They have to pay and fund those on benefits as well. What's so shocking about wanting to enjoy the fruits of your labour? High pay is due to hard work and skill.

If someone has never cleared £25k/pa in their entire adult life I'd seriously wonder about the choices they made that led up to this (barring disabilities or major life catastrophes). One of the reasons I've always hammered into my kids the need to do well at school.

I have a young adult DC working. They are on 30k and want to move up and be more senior and get paid more. They see higher salaries as something to aspire to and work towards.

I think you mean 'exorbitant'.

One year I paid 185 K in income tax. I’d love for more women to become high earners. AMA.

What industry are you in and what did you study at uni?

sarahburneraccount35 · 15/02/2026 07:14

@IDontHateRainbowsits a thread about the attitudes of high earners and I was using AMA to indicate I was happy to answer questions about that as a sometimes high earner, that’s all :)

That's not how AMAs work. You need to start your own thread.

Makingadecision · 15/02/2026 02:58

And what about ‘normal earners’? Does their money not also come from people using their services and buying things?
the problem is that some pay a lot of tax but are excluded from benefiting from almost all of it

  1. Whites are a minority in certain UK boroughs/cities TODAY and trends show they will be in the UK overall in future decades. Just a question of when.

  2. If socialist tax expert lawyer Dan Neidle says high earners in the UK are taxed too much. The cliff edge 100k salary threshold is also universally acknowledged by economists as being negative for UK economic growth.

Sure but this isn't relevant to what I said. Again, both opening posts are stupid and goady. If they had made sensible, well researched comments, that would have been different.
I think Dan Neidle is excellent and I admire the way he is exposing billionaire tax evaders. I also agree that the cliff edge 100k salary threshold in the UK is destructive, as is the lower cliff edge at around 50k. Policies that disincentivise work are foolish as are those that reward people more for 'investing' (often just speculating) or for hoovering up masses of homes, preventing younger people from having security, are destructive and wrong imo.

This is the second unintelligent, goady thread that I've opened (the other being the whites in the minority one). Is there something in the water at the moment?
