To take child out with chickenpox

DD age 3 had chickenpox. Today is day 7 since they first appeared. She's loved the multiple pyjamas days but we are starting to go stir crazy! She had new spots appear yesterday overnight and I'm not sure any of us can handle another 5 days cooped up indoors. Other than spots she's here usual self (ball of energy!) I was thinking to go out for a walk along the river. Maybe grab a quick take away coffee and cake and perch somewhere outdoors. Thinking 'covid social distancing' style rules would apply here for our own sanity surely?

Walk in the woods nobody around yes go ahead. Fail to see the need for a coffee shop though.

TheDenimPoet · 10/02/2026 16:00

Go for a walk somewhere there won't be other people, and take a little picnic with you. Stay outside. I know a lot of people are saying it's selfish etc, but really, how are you supposed to pass on an infection if you don't come into contact with anyone?

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 10/02/2026 15:57

Not saying either approach is wrong or right - just find it curious that advice can be so different

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 10/02/2026 15:55

It’s interesting to me because where I live (not UK) chicken pox is not a reason to miss school. For example at the moment, there is a notice outside the school notifying parents that there is chicken pox at the school. When DD got chicken pox we did keep her off as she had a temp and was under the weather but we could have sent her to school. It’s true here for crèches too.

crossedlines · 10/02/2026 15:53

What’s the betting the OP pops back later to tell us she had a wonderful time, the best cake ever from a stall where there was no queue and definitely no immunocompromised stall holder, oh and there was a handy perch too!

Designless · 10/02/2026 15:42

I guess imagine what you'd want other people to do if your child had leukaemia rather than chicken pox

Then do that

so realistic.
Idealistic should do's and should be's of MN do not reflect the reality of the world.

Maybe your world. In my world, luckily, people are thoughtful and considerate of others.

gototogo · 10/02/2026 15:10

Please don’t perch anywhere or more to the point queue to buy said food - you don’t know who is immunocompromised. Go for a remote walk but take you snacks with you

Complete rubbish!! Google isn’t factual or correct with a lot of things - most people had chicken pox as a child which when exposed to it again as an adult leads to shingles. You CANT catch chickenpox from shingles!!

You absolutely can catch chickenpox from shingles FYI, from contact with the lesions.

I took my toddler with chickenpox out to the local park but parks these days are always heaving with people, we did stop at a cafe and the service staff was not impressed at all. Life doesn't stop if you have an infection, if you're immunocompromised you stay at home but life will go on knowingly or unknowingly people will go out with infections it's on you to isolate.

So I should isolate for the rest of my life? Who will pay my bills?

You Clearly just posted this to get a rise from people.

JustAnotherWhinger · 10/02/2026 14:56

Some of the attitudes on this thread, and in general (especially post covid), are downright frightening for the mother of an immunocompromised child.

its bad enough that every day is running the gauntlet of encountering unknown illnesses, but the levels of selfishness now where people happily mix knowing they are contagious is horrific.

JustAnotherWhinger · 10/02/2026 14:53

The main issue with going entirely outdoors is the toilet issue.
she absolutely shouldn’t be going into a public toilet with active chickenpox.

if you’re prepared to take a potty or deal with a bush wee then fine.

if not then even outdoors isn’t ok.

MangoBodyScrub · 10/02/2026 14:48

You can only control yourself, you can't control what others do. If you are vulnerable, stay away and stay at home because people can harm you, without malice or intention, it's constant risk. The safest is you control your environment.

I can’t stay at home forever. Life goes on like you said but people want me to stay home forever but can’t face a week-10 days with a child with chickenpox?!

It's pointless because people already walk around knowingly or unknowingly with infections, it's not realistic to expect people to stay home, this is your own burden and problem.

TheIceBear · 10/02/2026 14:40

RheaRhanged · 10/02/2026 13:13

Exactly!
OP, take your daughter out for a walk, I did once mine were well enough when they had it, nice countryside walk did us the world of
good. I mean I’ll probably get lynched for this but I also had to the school run as not everyone has someone else to do that for them so probably risked millions of lives 🙄

What do you mean “exactly “ . Shingles is not airborne and is nowhere near as infectious as chickenpox. You can catch chickenpox from standing next to someone with it without even touching them

As long as no one is going to be touching your child and they’re not going to be in close contact as they’re contagious through cough droplets, then it’s perfectly okay to take them out in the fresh air!
Theyre more contagious before the spots appear than when the spots are actually there!

LosDiablos · 10/02/2026 12:23

Let's not pretend your sorry. If you had even a shred of empathy for people with similar conditions, you wouldn't have made this post.

And you most definitely CAN catch shingles from someone with chicken pox, it shows how little you know and are willing to risk for a bit of fresh air.

I now have permanent liver issues added to the list of life limiting conditions thanks to the parent that couldn't possibly keep their sick child in for a few weeks until no longer contagious. Not to mention the loss in salary and time with my own children.

I'm clearly wasting my breath though as you won't even listen to those that are telling you it's a bad idea. You keep coming back with excuses in favour of your needs.

Let's hope you never have to support a vulnerable family member with your selfish mentality.

From the NHS website:

Shingles - NHS

Causes of shingles
You cannot get shingles from someone with shingles or chickenpox.
But you can get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had chickenpox before.
When people get chickenpox, the virus stays in the body. It can be reactivated later and cause shingles if someone's immune system is weakened.
This can be because of stress, certain conditions, or treatments like chemotherapy.

You can't catch singles from someone with chickenpox. As per link you provided where it says.Transmission: You cannot catch shingles from chickenpox; you get shingles from your own past chickenpox infection. However, someone with active shingles can transmit the virus to someone who has never had chickenpox,

Shingles can be triggered by contact with chickenpox
Shingles is far less contagious than chickenpox.
Many who are immune compromised either cannot have vaccinations or find them ineffective due to the nature of their compromised immune systems.

Most of us have had to work through the hell that is childhood diseases without taking them out to infect everyone else.

Perhaps you should have vaccinated your children against chicken pox - its been available privately for many years in the UK and has been a mainstream vaccination in many countries for as long.

Sadly there is no vaccination against self absorbed entitlement and lazy ageism.

And if there’s a queue at the stand?

It's outside, silly. You can't catch viruses if you're outside according to this thread.

DH caught Covid from a friend. They were just going for their weekly walk, outside.
The friend had tried to be very careful re infection as his dd was going through chemo but he still got it as did my dh a couple of days later.

This!

People like the OP are the reason I spent most on January in hospital with complications from shingles.

No one cares about anyone other than themselves these days. You know it's wrong or you wouldn't be asking here. I doubt you will listen to any advice and do whatever suits your needs anyway.

I really do hope that the OP never has to deal with vulnerable family member in the future like myself and your FIL. It's so disheartening having to rely on others to do the right thing to keep us safe.

You can't catch shingles from a child with chickenpox - the virus stays dormant in the body and is reactivated by age, stress and other illnesses.

We always get a few people per thread along with the antivax era who try and claim otherwise

I’d be worried even if you just used the local kiosk as you or your dd might need to use the loo.
You can’t leave her on her own outside if you need to go and if she needs to go she could infect others.
