Husband told daughter to stop chewing so loudly in his ear

AIBU to be upset and angry about this comment my husband made to.our 11 year old daughter. We'd been out swimming, treated the kids to a pack of sweets each, in the car on the way home. Daughter and husband sat next to each other in the back and all of a sudden he says to her 'can you stop chewing so loudly in my ear' it clearly offended her. Thoughts please...

You’d be calling social services on me!

I’ve always told mine to stop chewing loudly when they are, and god help them (husband too) if it was right down my ear.

Chewing with your mouth open is rude - if kids parents are not going to tell them to stop, who is?

AllAbouttYou · 09/02/2026 21:50

My thoughts are she was chewing loudly and annoying him so he asked her to not chew so loudly. Seriously OP what are your thoughts?

ByUniqueViper · 09/02/2026 21:50

💯 agree

ByUniqueViper · 09/02/2026 21:49

You're upset and angry and daughter is offended. Jeez imagine if something bad actually happened or was said to any of you. I really think you need to get a grip!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/02/2026 21:40

I did not at any point suggest that you thought the husband was in the wrong, and I certainly didn't imply it in the post you are being unhappy about.

There a big difference between telling someone to do something, and asking them to.

As a child, I was well aware of that difference.

Presumably the loud-chomping eleven-year-old hasn't grasped it, or being asked (with the word please) to do something wouldn't "offend" her.

My first paragraph does, quite directly, because you said that he told her and I pointed out that (according to the OP) he asked her. According to the OP, he even said please when he did so.

You seem to think that I thought that the husband was in the wrong and quite clearly, I don't. Pity you haven't got anything better to do than nitpick and get it wrong in the process.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 09/02/2026 21:21

don’t see a problem here unless there’s a backstory or he said it aggression or something.

I have to constantly tell my kids to keep mouths closed when eating. Good manners but I’m also very noise sensitive. If someone was close and chewing I’d probably tell them too!

@Helen1625 loads of people have mentioned the mouth being open, but it doesn't say it in the OP I don't think and there have been no follow ups unless I missed something? People can chew incredibly loudly with their mouths shut, especially chewy sweets!

Ah, maybe I've read it on one of the other comments and not directly from the OP.

The rest of what I said still stands though.

Arlanymor · 09/02/2026 20:29

Your husband is trying to instil manners into his daughter. Good for him - I see so many adults now who eat impolitely because their parents never taught them to eat politely with their mouths closed. Because let’s be honest, it’s usually people who eat with their mouths open who are the loudest. But why did I bother to reply? Another thread when the OP doesn’t come back because the answers are overwhelming not in their favour. I find it so immature, rude and time wasting of other people’s genuine goodwill.

Marrietothejob · 09/02/2026 20:28

I constantly tell.my son to eat things nicely it's just basic manners. Why is it such an issue that he said it?

@Meg878o hasn't been back to update the thread. I wonder why she even bothered to start it

Letmeloveyou · 09/02/2026 20:20

Lol loud chewing is so annoying. Why would this bother you?

CaffeinatedMum · 09/02/2026 20:19

Voted YANBU by mistake! You are definitely being unreasonable. I say this all the time to my five year old.

TeeBee · 09/02/2026 20:15

I think she needs to learn not to eat with her mouth open or loudly. Perfectly reasonable request by your DH. If she gets offended at that, she needs to toughen up.

Helen1625 · 09/02/2026 20:11

She should not have been chewing loudly with her mouth open.

Your husband did nothing wrong by asking her to stop.

She has no reason to be 'offended'. That's a strange (over)reaction. Is she not used to being corrected?

You being upset and angry is a massive overreaction.

@Whatsmyusername85 some people can absolutely have their mouth closed and still be very audible chewers. My husband is one, as is his mother, but his father and brother are fine. I'm pretty certain I have misophonia so am sensitive to it but it's by no means everyone so would say some are just louder than others despite having perfectly acceptable manners.

justaskme · 09/02/2026 19:53

@Blades2 have you discovered the loop earplugs yet? Lifesaver for when you still need to be engaged/present in the chat but mask ambient noise (like chewing from the next table for example)

Just don't trust the 'carrier'. Springs open way too easily and then they're gone 🙄

Remmy123 · 09/02/2026 19:46

🤣🤣😂 brilliant!

👏👏👏

That’s abuse. Get her signed up for therapy asap and LTB.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/02/2026 19:40

We were not told what sort of sweets the child was eating. If they were ones you chew than the noise can be really loud and horrible; if they were ones you suck then you have to make quite an effort to be as noisy with them as you can be with, say, a toffee.

And chocolate, of course, is generally almost silent no matter how disgusting you try to be.

I cannot bare anyone chewing gum. Make me feel physically sick. When the kids got in the car they knew they had to.bin it. Teach your daughter some manners. Listening to someone chewing is utterly disgusting. I think he was quite reserved.
