Husband told daughter to stop chewing so loudly in his ear

AIBU to be upset and angry about this comment my husband made to.our 11 year old daughter. We'd been out swimming, treated the kids to a pack of sweets each, in the car on the way home. Daughter and husband sat next to each other in the back and all of a sudden he says to her 'can you stop chewing so loudly in my ear' it clearly offended her. Thoughts please...

My thoughts are that this shouldn't be taken so seriously as to make a thread on here about it

StuffyHuffyPuffy · 09/02/2026 08:14

Haahahaaaha! Sorry if this offended your daughter, you've a long way to go with her.

Dollymylove · 09/02/2026 08:14

If that was the worst thing my parents had ever said to me, my life would have been so much better

rainbowstardrops · 09/02/2026 08:13

Offended by being told to stop chewing so loudly? FFS 🙄

Mylovelygreendress · 09/02/2026 08:08

A member of my family chews loudly and it grates on me . Unless there is a huge back story , not sure what he has done wrong ?

MatronPomfrey · 09/02/2026 08:08

My DH and DS have this conversation nearly everyday. I don’t understand your issue with it.

OlympicsRock2 · 09/02/2026 08:07

Nothing to be upset about . She needs to stop
chewing loudly - and perhaps check that she is closing her mouth when she eats/ not stuffing too much in at once.

pinkdelight · 09/02/2026 08:07

Total non-event.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 09/02/2026 08:05

You need to explain why you are upset and angry at what is a normal thing to say to a child who is old enough to know to chew with her mouth closed.

Rooroobear · 09/02/2026 08:03

Upset and angry? Very ott reaction. Chewing noises are gross, he asked her to stop chewing so loudly. At 11 she should know to close her mouth whilst eating. If I was your husband I’d be mad at you for being upset and angry at me for reminding my 11 year old child of basic manners

lessglittermoremud · 09/02/2026 07:53

Sorry but team DH on this one, I have to tell my children if they are chewing loudly when they are eating, lip smacking and slurping noises also make me rage which they all know and on occasion they purposely do it and then grin in my direction.
My DH was sat munching on crisps last night whilst watching tv, I only had to look at him and he started munching with less enthusiasm. I just can’t bear it 😬

Whatsmyusername85 · 09/02/2026 07:20

My thoughts are that she needs to learn to close her mouth while eating…it’s basic manners. No harm done imo

Agreed.

G5000 · 09/02/2026 07:51

What's the issue? one of my DC needs to be reminded to eat with mouth closed, chewing noises are horrible.

benten54 · 09/02/2026 07:50

i remember my grandmother bellowing ‘stop chomping child!!’ If I was eating in an unseemly way and a friends mum telling me to eat with my mouth closed. The latter made me mortified but as a result have impeccable table manners and many friends who are willing to be in my vicinity while eating.

Whatafustercluck · 09/02/2026 07:49

Dh can't be near anyone crunching food - crisps, sweets etc. It's a more pronounced irriation when he's already stressed. Obviously it's impossible to eat some things quietly, so he removes himself from the room temporarily. I can understand that food-eating noises aren't nice to hear for anyone, but if it's misophonia then the irritation is on another level. Your dd might have been chewing particularly loudly, or your dh might be ultra sensitive to the sound. Either way, unless there's a back story your reaction seems a bit OTT.

Soooooo · 09/02/2026 07:49

Angry and upset?? Was this shouted at her or did he ask her politely? Was she chewing loudly? On the face of it it seems like a massive overreaction unless he has form for being horrible.

ParisianLady · 09/02/2026 07:48

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Loud chewing noises are disgusting and the table manners of many children are appalling.

There are some that we hesitate to invite over for a meal given how badly, and loudly, they eat.

Team DH here. And why was he in the back?

Hoardasurass · 09/02/2026 07:47

Yes yabu nobody should have to listen to someone loudly chewing especially if she's chewing with her mouth open.

Its a parents job to teach their children basic manners including how to eat quietly with your mouth closed, by age 11 she should already know not to make loud chewing noises.

The question i have is why do you think that your daughter should be allowed to make loud gross chewing noises in someone's ear and not be pulled up for it? Or is it just that her dad did it?

RawBloomers · 09/02/2026 07:47

Edited, because someone else's point made more sense:

OP, if your DH saying this has made you upset and angry - what's going on in your marriage? Has he been a total git in other ways? You don't have to wait for him to be nasty to your kids, if he's nasty to you that's reason enough to take action.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/02/2026 07:45

That's basic parenting, why on earth would that upset or anger you?

Coffeeishot · 09/02/2026 07:45

I would have been the same with an 11 year old, is her dad not allowed to tell her off?

Magnoliafarm · 09/02/2026 07:44

Some chewy sweets are literally impossible to eat without loud chewing it sticks your teeth together and you have to pull them hard to get them apart! Did none of you steal a chewy stripy lolly from the Halloween bucket? Or what about fruut gums? You can try to eat them without chewing but it's so hard not to chew there was an advert about this for years! Go and eat some now and see if you can do it quietly.

Applecup · 09/02/2026 07:44

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/02/2026 07:21

Sounds like she was really enjoying those sweets, what a shame.

Blimey I’ve often told me kids to close their mouth while eating/stop making a noise/eat nicely. They’ve all grown up perfectly fine. Stop being so overprotective. Better to hear it from a parent than everyone else think it.

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/02/2026 07:43

B1anche · 09/02/2026 07:32

Oh no, she was...offended? Call social services quick.

Of course she was offended, it’s her job to now learn how to be offended at everything.

Sounds like mother is training her well.

ShawnaMacallister · 09/02/2026 07:42

Pepperedpickles · 09/02/2026 07:31

Depends on how he said it. If he said it calmly and nicely but as a way of pointing it out that’s absolutely fine surely?

Even if he said it irritably it would still be fine. Children aren't made of glass, they can take a bit of a telling off when they are being annoying. She's 11, not 4!
