Flushing the toilet after every wee.

10 litres per flush is a huge amount of water per wee (that's what I believe our cistern holds).
I don't think it's necessary to flush after every wee. My friend thinks I'm tight and unhygienic.
What's your view...
Are you a 'if it's yellow let it mellow'...I am reasonable
Or...'eww you filthy sod'..I am unreasonable

Please?! What gets rid of this?! Anyone?!

We've ended up with this after not flushing every time when emptying potties down during toilet training. Loos have never recovered.

Edited

Vinegar will.

I voted wrong, you're not unreasonable.

I flush every few wees when it's just the two of us. Also keep bath water for a day and use that to flush. Stops the bath guilt!

Do you mean you just leave the bath full and gradually empty it to flush the loo?

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 08/02/2026 21:20

If it’s just me at home I might not bother everytime - I drink loads of water so it’s not even very yellow. Maybe alternate as it’s a bit of a waste. But if we’re all at home then I would. Kids forget sometimes. We have the flush button with two options as well so I think that helps.

2 flushes per visit is wasteful

Its not 2 flushes per visit overall, is it, when there is one or more people without flushing before that.

Squirrelchops1 · 08/02/2026 21:19

Maybe I'm used to not flushing or being aware as we have a motorhome and tank would be full in no time if we did a full flush each time

I have a chronic bowel condition and often have to flush up to five times in one go, so yes I flush my piss away too, because in for a penny in for a pound. But also because piss stinks, funnily enough, like piss and it’s not an aroma I can say that I enjoy particularly. BTW if you’re a multipissing household your bathroom does reek of piss, you’re just used to it and all your guests are too polite to say anything.

My inlaws leave it. Its grim as it makes the room smell. Also their toilet now has yellow stained limescale that is is proving difficult to remove

I didn't even know not flushing was a thing. I am honestly a little shocked at this thread.

But then I live in a country where there are never water shortages and we don't pay for water so maybe that's why.

Night time we don't as the DC wake at the sound of a pindrop but apart from that then yes, every flush. You can get limiter things to put in the cistern to reduce the amount of water per flush.

This. Nothing to do with water saving, everything to do with a quiet night.

katepilar · 08/02/2026 21:17

As a foreigner I find it kind of amusing how far Brits go to save water but how careless I have seen them waste electricity, food, etc. Not to mention the excessive clothes and laundry washing.

Driftingawaynow · 08/02/2026 21:17

We used to use a jug of cold bath water to manually flush and then (still do) for wees wipe using a washable wipe which only gets put through machine when you’re running a load anyway. No worse than washable nappies, was very handy during pandemic when everyone was freaking out about loo roll

Tuesdayschild50 · 08/02/2026 21:16

Flush on the half button every time.. house with 2 sons 1 grandaughter.. I spray and wipe the loo seat before I sit down and after .
Since my perimeno 🤣

DawnBreaks · 08/02/2026 21:16

Always flush. Always, always always. I'm shuddering here at the thought of all that wee fermenting for hours. Just bleugh.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 08/02/2026 21:16

Sorry it is grim to not flush after every use.

SassyCow · 08/02/2026 21:15

I don't flush during the night when I've been for a wee due to noise but I do each time through the day. I do drink alot of water so it's lightly coloured and doesn't smell.

I just put some bleach down the toilet first thing in the morning and flush after a few wees.

freakingscared · 08/02/2026 21:13

The only tive I debt flush is in the night as my youngest wakes up easily . No way I having urine sit there for ages . That’s gross

katepilar · 08/02/2026 21:12

Get a cistern that has a big flush and a small flush.

swapsicles · 08/02/2026 21:12

I live alone so tend to shut the lid and only flush (wees) every other time, occasionally more if I know I'll go again shortly.
Every time if there's guests or in elsewhere though

ThisDandyWriter · 08/02/2026 21:11

If the water companies are that worried about water wastage, they should fix all the leaks.

Evaka · 08/02/2026 21:10

henlake7 · 08/02/2026 21:07

I'm a mellow yellow person, doesn't bother me to see my own pee in the toilet!
I would probably feel different if I didn't live alone though and obviously always flush if I have visitors or go elsewhere.

justasking111 · 08/02/2026 21:06

We lived rurally for twenty years. Had a septic tank. The grey water from the shower washing machine went elsewhere. We were advised not to put too many chemicals down. We didn't flush at night. You're not supposed to kill the bacteria in a septic tank
