Flushing the toilet after every wee.

10 litres per flush is a huge amount of water per wee (that's what I believe our cistern holds).
I don't think it's necessary to flush after every wee. My friend thinks I'm tight and unhygienic.
What's your view...
Are you a 'if it's yellow let it mellow'...I am reasonable
Or...'eww you filthy sod'..I am unreasonable

I don't flush every single time. I live alone and drink a lot so my urine is diluted and doesn't smell. Even if it did it wouldn't bother anyone else as it's just me. I like to save water where I can.

It does sound a bit weird to me, but I am pleased you have a special jug😂

It's probably the weirdest thing I do. We present as very normal to the untrained eye ;)

ohyesido · 08/02/2026 21:33

Depends if it’s a smelly wee. A light one after two pints of water can stay, any that have hints of ammonia must be flushed immediately

Topseyt123 · 08/02/2026 21:32

It should be second nature to flush every time. Not doing so is disgusting. It definitely does smell.

There is not a chance I would be leaving the bath water to flush the loo.

When I was a pre schooler my friend from next door used to save up his uneaten pieces of cheese sandwich to ‘send to Bob Geldof for the starving children in Africa’. In terms of its futility it’s possibly on par with many of the efforts of some of the people on this thread. He was four so we won’t hold his ignorance against him.

Yeah, we have a special jug. Probably sounds a bit weird but I work on waste/resource efficiency stuff so can't unsee how mental it is to use pristine water to flush.

I wouldn't mind if it was just my wee (providing I'd rank enough water). But I couldn't cope with anyone else's wee being left to 'mellow'.

If your toilet doesn't have a half flush function, you can get things to put inside the cistern to use less water.

I posted a link upthread.

Please?! What gets rid of this?! Anyone?!

We've ended up with this after not flushing every time when emptying potties down during toilet training. Loos have never recovered.

I live in a very hard water area. I found that thick bleack first leave 24 hours, then flush thoroughly, 2 or 3 times, then a LOT of thick limescale remover like two whole bottles and leave for another 24 hours. Might need doing more than once then keep up with the cleaning. I learned this after renting the house out while we were abroad for 2 years. I also use old fashioned cistern blocks, they are sort of soapy and coat the bowl and under the water to stop the limescale sticking so much. Since having a water softener fitted the problem is only now in the downstairs loo and I keep up with it.
True story. I am a London girl. My dear late mum needed more and more help with her housework as she got older and the taps, and loo got really thickly covered. I used a tack hammer and hit with a kind of bouncing stroke to get lumps of limescale off the taps AND the loo bowl. it worked very well but don't try this at home!!

God we couldn't afford to. Not on a meter

Eviangeica · 08/02/2026 21:28

We flush every time even when the children were small. I can think of nothing worse than leaving dirty bath water to flush the toilet either, our bath is washed after it’s been used.

IWantToHibernate · 08/02/2026 21:28

I wee quite a lot and it’s often clear so I don’t bother for a few hours. Once there is colour to it, I flush.

geminicancerean · 08/02/2026 21:23

You do know that doing so makes the sum difference of fuck all to the country’s water supply, right? People leave their sprinklers on all fucking day and you’re over here pouring jugs down the bog. Life is too short.

You do you, makes me feel better.

ThatCyanCat · 08/02/2026 21:27

Flush every time and wash hands too. Are there still a load of people on here who don't wash their hands after a wee at home? That's utterly revolting too.

And among us also walk women with such a terror of public toilet seats that they prefer to "hover". I wondered for years how a ladies' toilet could get so disgusting and sprayed with piss, as I sometimes saw, until I came here and discovered the phenomenon of women waving themselves over toilets because they can't bear the backs of their thighs touching a surface that's touched other thighs. Jfc.

Do you mean you just leave the bath full and gradually empty it to flush the loo?

I have three kids that don’t flush the toilet. I need to flush before I pee so I don’t end up splashed with their pee…

meh. I made my kids clean up any splashes from an early age - leave the toilet as you would expect to find it.

Carycach4 · 08/02/2026 21:26

I wasnt aware of any shortage of water. It has rained every day since xmas.

WiddlinDiddlin · 08/02/2026 21:26

Ugh no.

I have a toilet that flushes itself as you get off it and thats not a function I can switch off.

But in any case, 'let it mellow' in our water and you get a nasty build up of grossness very quickly, and then have to spend more time cleaning the bastard and putting all sorts of chemicals down it.

Marble10 · 08/02/2026 21:25

If we have people over then yes of course we will flush.
But otherwise no, our toilet seems to use excessive water per flush too and it seems so wasteful on sometimes a little dribble.

ghostofchristmaspasta · 08/02/2026 21:23

My husband came from a family that had to preserve water and it took years for him to remember to flush every time. I don’t think it’s disgusting or unreasonable but I prefer the toilets to be flushed after every use and that is the house rule.

rockingroller · 08/02/2026 21:23

If I'm in the house alone I try to leave it a few times before flushing. Also overnight because of the noise. It's not unhygenic, but it's also not very nice coming across someone else's wee.

CherryShiner77 · 08/02/2026 21:22

10 litres per flush? That sounds a lot when you say it like that. I can’t imagine that the equivalent of five big bottles of pop are being poured down with every flush…it certainly doesn’t look like that much.
We don’t flush at night but we do flush every otherwise due to limescale. I don’t think it’s gross not to flush every time in your own home though!

SP2024 · 08/02/2026 21:22

Yes. Except at night when we let it mellow to avoid waking the kids
