Flushing the toilet after every wee.

10 litres per flush is a huge amount of water per wee (that's what I believe our cistern holds).
I don't think it's necessary to flush after every wee. My friend thinks I'm tight and unhygienic.
What's your view...
Are you a 'if it's yellow let it mellow'...I am reasonable
Or...'eww you filthy sod'..I am unreasonable

DH says I have beefy wees so I have to flush 😂

RoseWineLover · 08/02/2026 23:06

I'm on a water meter and definitely don't flush after every wee (I do if I have guests and it kills me!) That's a complete waste of water IMO.

Cherryicecreamx · 08/02/2026 23:01

I'm with your friend here! Not sure I could leave a toilet without flushing! I don't fancy seeing it either on my next visit in 🤢

Plasticdreams · 08/02/2026 23:00

It smells so I flush

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 08/02/2026 22:56

I've got kidney issues so need to flush everytime. My toilet uses between 4 and 6 litres. Got to keep an eye on the colour so need the toilet to be clean to do that.

Summerhut2025 · 08/02/2026 22:52

My bill is ridiculous since partner moved in but I never thought of this to save a bit as I’m in on my own all day working and have an issue smelling bad things anyway so this may be a good shout for me mid week! We put blue toilet block down every loo so I think it should still clean ok. Cheers

Frigging hell, reading this thread worries me who my daughter is going to meet and marry and have to TRAIN to flush the fucking toilet every time. I didn’t know I lived and worked amongst such minging behaviour. Eye opening.

It’s 2026 people. It hasn’t stopped raining since Christmas.

👏👏👏 I’m so glad my MIL wasn’t one of the non flushing brigade and showed her sons how to flush a toilet. This place is madness at times!

Daftypants · 08/02/2026 22:46

I don’t flush during the night as it wakes people up.

BertieBotts · 08/02/2026 22:46

If I'm literally going right after them e.g. in a public toilet or it's a forced wee before we go out then OK you can have two wees to one flush. But leaving the wee in the toilet is horrible and I'm sure the miniscule amount of water saved is counteracted by the extra chemicals I have to shove down the toilet to clean it.

BertieBotts · 08/02/2026 22:42

It's absolutely gross not to flush. My children drive me mad not flushing. To be fair the youngest can't reach but the others have no excuse. It reeks and it stains the limescale so the toilets look absolutely minging and I am the only one who bothers to clean them Angry

We don’t flush at night and tend to leave it in the day for a few goes. Especially as my kids sometimes barely go, a tiny trickle they’re forced to do before we go out. Obviously I’d flush if we had guests and always flush at other people houses.

I also share bath water. kids go in and then once they are down I top up with hot water - seem a Waste otherwise. And they’re my kids, I’m the one who changes their nappies and bathes them daily - not manky, sweaty strangers.

I mean…sure they’re my kids but their skin still has dirt and bacteria that sloughs off into the bath water!

I get regular utis anyway, I cannot imagine it is in any way hygienic to bathe in someone’s used bath water, even if that someone is a small child? I mean, some times I have a quick shower or strip wash to save water, but I could not use someone else’s used water. I find that weirder than the no flushing thing from a hygiene perspective.

ClairDeLaLune · 08/02/2026 22:38

Always flush. I don’t understand the concept of wasting water. Surely it just goes into the sewage system, purified, and then reused?

PeloMom · 08/02/2026 22:36

Occasionally I used to leave it if went during the night (so that I don’t wake up DC) but omg the smell first thing in the morning was making me so nauseous! So I always flush.

LeDix · 08/02/2026 22:35

You use a tumble dryer but have a bowl of stinking piss in your house to ‘save the planet’ Shock

sleepwouldbenice · 08/02/2026 22:33

Given what you've said since about largely wfh alone and obviously flushing pre guests. Then fine
I dont flushing at night, I do in the day every time but thats habit
But the main point is to get a water hippo thing to cut water usage. Which is much more practical 🤔

ChattyCatty25 · 08/02/2026 22:33

I don’t flush for wees at home, it’s a waste. I would also then have to clean the toilet seat because it spits toilet water back up when it’s flushed.

I do flush if there’s visitors over, and in public loos and other people’s houses.

You save exponentially more water eating a plant based diet anyway, so I don’t worry too much about it but do my bit.

gototogo · 08/02/2026 22:33

We have dual flush toilets, yes every time but the mini flush uses 1/3 of the water

LizzieLazzie · 08/02/2026 22:32

We flush every time but we’re not on a water meter. We pay a fixed amount per year though we are aware of being careful for the environment. The reason this payment system was rolled out across the country after WW2 was to make sure everyone could keep clean to minimise germs and disease and for people to have unlimited safe drinking water. It was argued that charging on a meter would penalise larger families and those with extra water needs such as disabled and elderly people with incontinence.

SpaceRaccoon · 08/02/2026 22:32

I feel sick 🤢

Jamesblonde2 · 08/02/2026 22:27

It sounds a bit 1973 not flushing the loo.

Hear stories of parents moaning and being woken up by kids flushing in the night. That’s not me, I’m clear to my DC that they flush and if I wake up then I just go back to sleep. No problem.

We flush every time. Who wants to smell urine? And it does smell.

Perhaps those who don’t smell it are nose blind like those who can’t smell their own dog.

SlayBelle · 08/02/2026 22:25

We used to do the no flush thing when the kids were small. But now they’re teenagers and the girls have periods and the boys wee really stinks of grown up man piss, so I’m now enforcing mandatory flushing.

I’ve made a rod for my own back though because they’re all trying to break a habit of a lifetime of no flushing. So I wish we’d just trained them to flush from the beginning!

99pwithaflake · 08/02/2026 22:25

Unflushed urine stinks 😷

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 08/02/2026 22:25

If it is just the two of us I will miss flushes especially at night. Any visitors and we will flush. Have the duel size cistern.

randomchap · 08/02/2026 22:24

I want a clean bowl. Not someone else's piss

You don't want Neptune's kiss from a dirty toilet
