Flushing the toilet after every wee.

10 litres per flush is a huge amount of water per wee (that's what I believe our cistern holds).
I don't think it's necessary to flush after every wee. My friend thinks I'm tight and unhygienic.
What's your view...
Are you a 'if it's yellow let it mellow'...I am reasonable
Or...'eww you filthy sod'..I am unreasonable

Wee isn’t water though. Haven’t you ever been to a public restroom? They fucking stink due to all the residual body fluids. That’s what your home stinks like

Unless you have a very poor diet, full of greasy burgers and chips, you should not have the same problems as this elderly and confused man.

I never had a water meter until recently so it never occurred to me not to flush, there was no reason not to. Now we do have a meter and I suppose it would make financial sense not to flush after a wee when it's just me, but then I'd have to remember to flush before anyone came home, and it's easier just to do it every time.

PigletJohn · 09/02/2026 00:33

Modern dual-flush toilets don't use 10 litres for a wee

A brick can cause considerable damage to a cistern, and does not know when you want a full flush.

Some fashionable unbranded WC pans have a poor design and do not flush well first time. I have had great success with Twyfords and other well-established British brands.

I’m sorry but I have to agree with your friend. Who wants to use a toilet that has pee in it from the last person who used it!

What difference does it make, though? It's not as though toilets are sterile.

At home, I don't flush after every wee. I drink plenty of water and apart from the first wee of the day, my urine is virtually colourless and odourless.

FunkyFringe · 09/02/2026 00:29

Every time in downstairs cloakroom. Never during the night in en-suite and probably not every time in main bathroom.

Ponoka7 · 09/02/2026 00:25

I'd rather go piss down a grid, than use a toilet that hasn't been flushed. As a pp said, it hasn't stopped raining, piss where you want, it'll get flushed away. But not on a compost heap, only men can do that, because of our hormones.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/02/2026 00:24

Yep, only flush every 2nd or 3rd pee. Started that when we had a very significant heat wave one year endangering our water supply.

peanutbuttertoasty · 09/02/2026 00:18

Sharing bath water is absolutely rank

Or maybe your daughter will meet and marry someone who will TRAIN her in his ways, or will he not be allowed a contrary opinion in his own home? A typical MN woman then, my way or the highway!

I’ve just brought DC up to gave some bloody standards. Unlike some on here. Jeez.

Ugh, yes, splashback! I'd always flush first anyway if there was someone else's wee left in it so what's the point?

tachetastic · 09/02/2026 00:05

We don't flush for wees after the kids are asleep but during the daytime we always do. To be honest if I lifted the lid and found yellow water in the bowl I would probably flush before using the loo, and then again afterwards.

But I agree that you don't need a full cistern of water to flush away a wee. Maybe explore options to put a brick or something in the cistern to offset some of the water, or keep a jug by the bathroom sink so you just use 1-2 litres?

Gabitule · 08/02/2026 23:51

I don’t flush after every wee. It does not smell as the amount of urine is small comparing to the quantity of water in the bowl. I often put a little bit of bleach in the bowl so the bowl doesn’t stain.
If I have guests I obviously flush.

I also have shallow baths and wear my clothes more than once before washing them (except for underwear, socks and base layer touching my underarms).

Doing otherwise would feel wasteful and unnecessary.

kimf1963 · 08/02/2026 23:51

This is nothing, I once caught a friend peeing in a mug in her kitchen, then tipping it down the sink, washed down with a tiny splash of water. She said it was to save water, but omg I have never been back there since 😂She probably shat down the garden

Frigging hell, reading this thread worries me who my daughter is going to meet and marry and have to TRAIN to flush the fucking toilet every time. I didn’t know I lived and worked amongst such minging behaviour. Eye opening.

It’s 2026 people. It hasn’t stopped raining since Christmas.

AffableApple · 08/02/2026 21:19

Please?! What gets rid of this?! Anyone?!

We've ended up with this after not flushing every time when emptying potties down during toilet training. Loos have never recovered.

Edited

White vinegar in the loo, leave a few hours or overnight, comes off really easily. Might have to use a dreaded brush for a once over though, sorry!

Womaninhouse17 · 08/02/2026 23:40

I live on my own so don't always flush after a wee - but I usually do out of habit. If anyone else is staying, including my partner, I always flush. I wouldn't want to see his wee so don't expect him to look at mine.

waitinginwonderland · 08/02/2026 23:33

LazySusannes · 08/02/2026 22:21

What, after a wee?

Honestly, there seems to be so much fear or stigma attached to a simple pee!

It's not that long ago that bedrooms had chamber pots under the bed and outside toilets, and no one came to any harm.

People also used to bathe once a week, share dirty bath water, use outdoor bathrooms and throw chamber pot contents from upstairs windows. We’ve progressed.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/02/2026 23:32

You could put a closed bottle of tap water in your cistern and reduce each flush by 1.5 litres. Or a brick.
Use the toilet, flush the toilet and PUT THE LID BACK DOWN!

I'm not saying leave it with no flushing all day. People go from 0 to 100 in their thinking. I'm saying just not every flush, so like every other for example. I've never flushed every wee and seems odd you would.

How do people finding a bit of wee so offensive cope with the loos in Greece and not flushing paper?

Edited

I've always flushed loo roll in Greece 😬 I'm just a bit more careful about the amount of paper I use in one go 😬 More than thirty years I've been doing this, never blocked any toilets. Also just FYI that there's loads of establishments in Greece, be it cafés or hotels or whatever, where you are more than welcome to flush loo roll as all the plumbing has been updated. The flushing thing isn't something that happens by default everywhere in the country.

Pushmepullu · 08/02/2026 23:26

I have an overactive bladder so pee very very frequently. I use our en-suite and only flush every third pee, and only because I worry that too much paper would block the loo. If I were a man I would probably only flush once a day!

2Rebecca · 08/02/2026 23:22

It has rained non stop here for weeks. I have no concerns about flushing the loo. We don’t at night for urine though.

I dont go to Greece.

I can camp in a tent or stay in a 5 star hotel but I need a fully functioning flushable toilet, even if I have to walk across a muddy field to get to it!

TwoBagsOfCompost · 08/02/2026 23:21

Squirrelchops1 · 08/02/2026 20:31

Christ people....if we've visitors of course we flush each time but ordinarily it's just me here 4 days a week as partner works away and only home x 3 days a week.

Is now the time to confess to sharing bath water too lol

Edited

Can I play the 'foreigner' card and ask what the deal is with sharing bath water? So, you have a bath and when you're finished you leave that lukewarm water full of soap suds and skin cells and the dirt you scrubbed off yourself, so the next person hops into THAT water and uses it to clean themselves? I don't want to google it 😬

Not playing all superior, we do wacky stuff where I'm from too.

With regards to the flushing question, yeah sometimes I pretend to 'forget' to flush so we can save some water, but that's mainly because I work from home a lot and have a bladder the size of a subatomic particle.

sweetpickle2 · 08/02/2026 20:29

Always flush here, unflushed pee in a loo smells.

This is why I insist too
Surely everyone else can smell it? My ex used to leave it and the smell would actually make me gag.

Plus it stains

Vom.
