Flushing the toilet after every wee.

10 litres per flush is a huge amount of water per wee (that's what I believe our cistern holds).
I don't think it's necessary to flush after every wee. My friend thinks I'm tight and unhygienic.
What's your view...
Are you a 'if it's yellow let it mellow'...I am reasonable
Or...'eww you filthy sod'..I am unreasonable

Pour the whole bottle down. We have horrendous limescale here! Only thing which sorts it out if we have left it too long.

I would if I could, but they get all defensive and wont let us sort it. FILs pee is thick dark.... its just grim. I dread going to the loo

Pasta4Dinner · 09/02/2026 08:57

im alone at home during the day and I wee constantly because I drink so much. If it doesn’t bother me I don’t see the problem.
If someone else is here then obviously I do something different.

MIL was obsessed with toilet flushing. She would blow her nose and put in the toilet and flush rather than throw the tissue out. Her bathroom stank of pee, probably because of FIL.

Christ people....if we've visitors of course we flush each time but ordinarily it's just me here 4 days a week as partner works away and only home x 3 days a week.

Is now the time to confess to sharing bath water too lol

I'm more than happy to admit I'm minging and my personal hygiene is far far from perfect. But urghhh this turned my stomach. We're not in the 80s any more. This is why showers were became popular.

Squirrelchops1 · 09/02/2026 07:23

It's often my own pee as im here alone 60% of the time

I don't know why you're bothering to ask!
'You do you' is what matters here.

In terms of saving the planet and your own water bill /usage, do what works for you - and that is saving water.

As for the posters who say it smells- well, leave the lid down or even open that thing called a window !

There are far more important things in life to worry about.

isitmytime · 09/02/2026 07:34

I don’t flush the ensuite toilet during the night because it backs onto my neighbours bedroom and their bed is against the wall. But any other time I flush. I have a sense of smell to rival a bloodhound and I can honestly say I’ve never smelled stale wee from doing this.

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/02/2026 07:25

We don’t flush a wee at night.
In your situation, if I was home alone for most of the day, then no I wouldn’t flush a wee.

Unflushed loos stink! Flush every time! Who wants to go to a loo that stinks of urine? Who wants to pee on top of someone else’s pee? Grim! 🤢

Can I play the 'foreigner' card and ask what the deal is with sharing bath water? So, you have a bath and when you're finished you leave that lukewarm water full of soap suds and skin cells and the dirt you scrubbed off yourself, so the next person hops into THAT water and uses it to clean themselves? I don't want to google it 😬

Not playing all superior, we do wacky stuff where I'm from too.

With regards to the flushing question, yeah sometimes I pretend to 'forget' to flush so we can save some water, but that's mainly because I work from home a lot and have a bladder the size of a subatomic particle.

No. My partner and I both shower in the morning and dont have physical jobs so are generally always pretty clean. He is literally a dip in and out of bath in under 5 mins. No scum and still really hot ....so rather wasteful actually if he has a bath to himself

That is absolutely rank. Your house must smell of piss. Can always smell when the kids haven't flushed.

Nope

If it’s just me here then no I often don’t flush, though sometimes do out of habit. If there is any chance of anyone else using the loo then it’s flushed every time

loislovesstewie · 09/02/2026 06:03

I don't under how people are being woken up by a toilet flushing when there are other noises in the night but those don't wake you up? Don't others wake up just by someone getting up go to the loo? The door closing? Floorboards creaking? My loos really don't make that much noise. 🙄

Wee isn’t water though. Haven’t you ever been to a public restroom? They fucking stink due to all the residual body fluids. That’s what your home stinks like

Edited

No, it doesn't.

dogmama13 · 09/02/2026 04:13

That is disgusting if you are just letting your waste sit there in the toilet. But that's my opinion and its your toilet and home so do as you please.

Shakespearandi · 09/02/2026 02:26

I had never thought of not flushing. Had never heard of it. Spent a couple of years backpacking and lots of simple toilet systems, often not flushable. Don't mind those. Anyway, my partner left me after 15 years and three children. Took everything..I am now trying to wait for a council house as my wage doesn't cover rent here for me and our 3 children. I don't flush for wees anymore. I do anything not to spend too much. Heating on only when my children are here and only for 1 hour in the morning. When it's just me I don't put the heating on at all. It goes down to 10'C and it's actually fine, just use a hot water bottle to keep myself warm.
So, two years ago I would have said, of course flush every time but not anymore!

Heyhelga · 09/02/2026 02:00

It's quite sad the cost of living crisis has got to the point where people are now being selective when and when not to flush the loo in order to save money.

Mistakenly clicked YANBU but you really are. Opening your Vjay over fermented pee is gross and the smell! How do you survive

NoArmaniNoPunani · 08/02/2026 20:31

Isn't that why the buttons now have 2 sides to them, the big part for poo and the small part for wee?

Exactly.

JillyComeLately · 09/02/2026 01:31

Just 2 of us, he flushes, but then he is like a camel and only wees once or twice maximum a day.
I go a lot, and don't flush every time,...and never in the night.
We used to share a bath....not so much nowadays, he loves a soak, I am in and out.

JohnTheRevelator · 09/02/2026 01:31

I don't flush every wee,but I live alone so there's no one up complain about it! I would always flush if I was visiting a friend's house,or in a public toilet. I must admit it's a bit grim when you go in a public toilet and the person before you hasn't flushed!

Brightsky210 · 09/02/2026 01:26

I’m genuinely confused this water you are refusing to flush has your wee in it it’s not like you scoop it out to use.

2026Y · 09/02/2026 01:18

Well my 4yo certainly agrees with you, he is very anti flushing 🙄

Parentingconfusing · 09/02/2026 01:15

HScully · 08/02/2026 20:52

My inlaws leave it. Its grim as it makes the room smell. Also their toilet now has yellow stained limescale that is is proving difficult to remove

Needspaceforlego · 09/02/2026 01:10

Sorry Op thats minging.

I will say I can almost understand sharing bathwater if you don't have a shower and money is tight. Heating water can be costly.

But I wouldn't do any of that just to save water, as someone else said look at sprinklers that get left all day, car washes, hot tubs, kids paddling pools, loads of other ways water gets wasted. We have flushing loos for a reason, non flushing is disgusting

My bathroom doesn't smell of urine! Possibly because none of us pee on the floor. It did smell for a while when a male friend was staying with us, though. I'm pretty sure he was dripping on the floor and not mopping it up.

I believe that many of the posters on this thread aren't drinking enough. It's normal for the first pee of the day to be bright/dark yellow, but if your subsequent pees are like that (or if they stink), then you might need to see your GP.
