Flushing the toilet after every wee.

10 litres per flush is a huge amount of water per wee (that's what I believe our cistern holds).
I don't think it's necessary to flush after every wee. My friend thinks I'm tight and unhygienic.
What's your view...
Are you a 'if it's yellow let it mellow'...I am reasonable
Or...'eww you filthy sod'..I am unreasonable

I'm honestly shocked by this thread. Every other thread on here about domestic habits, I'm always on the "grim" side. I only change my sheets every few weeks, clothes get a few wears, I rarely use bleach, use cold water for laundry, etc. But I've never considered not flushing the toilet at any time, and if my kids forget, it absolutely stinks.

It's pretty disgusting your sheets are not washed often.
They will be full of dead skin scales and god knows what else.

If your kids' wee stinks they aren't drinking enough.
Wee itself has very little smell.
Stale wee on the floor or carpets yes because it's changed by the air.

It's the ammonia in it that has a smell and if it's concentrated it smells more.

Yes, I don't think you get properly clean sitting in someone else's bathwater/with someone else in the bath. I feel the bacteria would be an infection risk for me. Obviously, I have occasionally bathed with my kids over the years, but would shower after, or strip wash, because I would not feel sufficiently clean.

I don’t really Understand your point. Why is the dirt and bacteria from my own body ok,
but not from my baby?

Soontobesingles · 09/02/2026 13:49

Leopardspota · 09/02/2026 13:44

But would you feel the same if we bathed at the same time?

I mean…sure they’re my kids but their skin still has dirt and bacteria that sloughs off into the bath water!

I get regular utis anyway, I cannot imagine it is in any way hygienic to bathe in someone’s used bath water, even if that someone is a small child? I mean, some times I have a quick shower or strip wash to save water, but I could not use someone else’s used water. I find that weirder than the no flushing thing from a hygiene perspective.

But would you feel the same if we bathed at the same time?

TheBeatenGeneration · 09/02/2026 13:38

A toilet is there to have piss and shit and god know what else in. And it's all pretty grubby beyond that u-bend. I think once upon a time I would have yelped at a shit stain. These days I don't really care.

In our house we generally leave wees, and flush poos. The only downside is, is that in our area (hardish water) leaving piss does seem to encourage faster build-ups of scale.

I tend to give the toilet a small wash and clean every other day anyway. Nothing much more than cleaning the seat and scrubbing the bowl.

I'm sure we save something on our water bill. Remember you are usually charged a proportional rate for waste from your intake.

In the summer I probably piss in the garden 2 out of 3 times. It's all good for the plants.

Maddy70 · 09/02/2026 13:23

I can smell a wee from the other bathroom in my house so I am very sensitive to smells. Absolutely flush every time

LifeisLemons · 09/02/2026 13:12

No, only flush any of the toilets when necessary. Wee doesn’t stink?

Rarely have visitors but obviously would flush every time then.

RoseWineLover · 09/02/2026 13:08

So many comments about the smell. If your bathroom is stinking because the toilet hasn't been flushed then there's something wrong with your wee/kidneys!! I flush after every 3/4 wees and it certainly doesn't 'stink' in my bathroom!

BauhausOfEliott · 09/02/2026 12:27

I don't think it's unhygienic not to flush after a wee. I just don't want to look at, or smell, anyone's old piss, so in our house we flush every time.

But if it doesn't bother you and your partner, I don't think you're doing anything wrong by not flushing.

Provided you're the only people in the house, anyway. Don't inflict your piss on visitors.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 09/02/2026 12:13

You can get bags that you put in your cistern, which apparently save water when you flush.

I flush every time, because of the horrendous limescale build-up otherwise. Also, I did not appreciate the smell of male pee in the bathroom when I was growing up!

Not at night, because of neighbours, but, yes, every time, during the day.

Fill up a bottle of water leave it in the cistern, or put a brick in it - something to take up space. You will use less water per flush that way.

XenoBitch · 09/02/2026 10:50

Bullshit.
They also stink because 100s of people use them every day. That is not the case with a loo at home.

Public toilets smell because of the particles in the air. Flushing creates a plume for around 1 metre (which is why it’s not a good idea to leave toothbrushes out next to the loo at home). You need to let the particles settle to not smell it which won’t work in highly visited loo.
Male and female wee smells different and females have a better sense of smell.
Guide dogs correctly send their owners to the right toilet as they can tell the difference too.
It’s also why unisex toilets stink to women more - women smell the male urine, and the enclosed space with no door gaps and no natural ventilation, concentrate the particles. The enclosed unisex design is more difficult to clean (soaking and drainage) and men don’t aim well. They also don’t wash their hands as much. I am not a fan of the sinks being in the same room as the public toilet because of all the reasons above. Unisex toilets contain more pathogens.

wishingonastar101 · 09/02/2026 11:58

I also wee in the shower....

wishingonastar101 · 09/02/2026 11:52

If it's just family at home we don't generally flush after a wee. Deffo if there are guests.

My DP also wees in the drain outside our backdoor when he is on work calls (camera off and AirPods in!) - which is revolting really but does save on water flushing and loo cleaning!

JoffreyArcher · 09/02/2026 11:39

I've never seen so much Pearl clutching.

If you or someone using the loo has stinky pee, then flush. But also maybe drink more water so your pee isn't so concentrated.
If you are sharing the loo with lots of family members, then flush, because other people's pee is more unpleasant than one's own.
If you have visitors or are a guest, flush every time. If pee goes on the floor, wipe it up.
If you aren't sharing, and don't have stinky pee, if you are concerned about water wastage or costs, or have a macerator that wakes sleeping children or dogs that bark if you go to the loo, if you are alone in the house, drink lots of water and have very dilute pee, then make a judgement about what is best in your home and your circumstances.

There's nothing intrinsically grim or unreasonable about not flushing pee every single time. To read all these responses you'd think OP was sharing a single loo with 20 undiagnosed diabetic men and never flushing at all.

If it stinks they're not drinking enough, which is obviously common in children. When you drink a lot of water wee is usually very dilute and doesn't smell. I've experienced using a toilet where the previous person has clearly been dehydrated even to a small extent and it isn't pleasant. When you drink a lot it really isn't an issue to avoid flushing for a wee or two.

Ferrfoxache · 09/02/2026 11:16

Being a woman of a certain age i get up at least twice during the night to pee. There was a time when i'd "let it mellow" because i didn't want to wake my husband up with the sound of the toilet flushing until he commented that he'd rather be woken up by the sound of the toilet flushing during the night than be hit by the smell of stale piss ( his words) when he gets up in the morning 😬So for that reason we flush every time. There are many other ways to save water where it doesn't have to become a hygeine issue.

XenoBitch · 09/02/2026 10:50

ThrowingDi · 09/02/2026 00:45

Wee isn’t water though. Haven’t you ever been to a public restroom? They fucking stink due to all the residual body fluids. That’s what your home stinks like

InveterateWineDrinker · 09/02/2026 10:38

We have family in Portugal and a home there, and although there have now been two very wet winters in succession there has been a decades-long water shortage all across the Alentejo and Algarve regions. Profligacy with water is one of the most antisocial things you can do: it is almost unthinkable to flush after just a wee in the home. My uncle goes out to piss in the garden.

The UK is rapidly heading towards structural water shortages too. If you're really using 10 litres per flush then honestly that's pretty wasteful. Our toilets use 3 litres on the short flush and 4.5 on the long one.

Belladog1 · 09/02/2026 10:09

My toilets have 2 buttons side by side, a large and smaller one. But maybe I have gigantic fingers, but I end up pressing them both together.

Weirdly, I had this conversation with my partner last night. I have always insisted he flushes the loo if he gets up to wee in the night, but he said yesterday that he hates doing it as he doesn't want to wake me. I told him he woke me anyway getting up, so it doesn't matter. I live alone 75% of the time, and I still flush after every wee.

So add a hippo to your cistern so it uses less water, or change it for a modern one with two options! Unless, of course, you’re going to manually scrub the deposits from the pee off the porcelain just below the water regularly!

The deposits aren't from pee. It's limescale.
If you scrub too hard the glaze comes off and you're left with the unglazed bowl round the water line.

zingally · 09/02/2026 09:57

We used to be "if it's yellow let it mellow" folk, but fairly quickly, it made our toilet seem stained and dirty MUCH quicker than if we just flushed each time.

We now flush during the day, and overnight leave it until morning.

Worralorra · 09/02/2026 09:10

Squirrelchops1 · 08/02/2026 20:33

I think so
..short or long flush
We only have 1 button though.
