Regret causing a scene in Aldi

I went to Aldi earlier. While I was scanning an item at the self checkout, the price was more expensive than the price on the sticker on the shelf. I asked the assistant if I could quickly go back to swap it. I was away for only about 2 minutes.

When I came back to the till, there was a man arguing with the assistant, saying she had to remove my items so he could use the till. I explained that the items were mine and that I had just gone back to swap something. He started shouting at me, saying I had “jumped the queue” and that I shouldn’t go to the till until I had finished my shopping.

I stayed quiet for a few moments. When he was in the queue, I approached him and pointed my finger, saying, “don’t fucking speak to me like that again, or at any woman.” He shouted at me in response, telling me not to point my finger or swear at him. I said, “You’ve chosen the wrong person to be rude to,” and went back to DD.

We finished paying at the same time, and he was walking close behind me, looking at me. I said, “I didn’t appreciate you shouting at me in front of my child.” He then said, “I’ll see you here at 4pm next Sunday.” I said I wasn't from the area so no chance and continued walking to my car.

As time has passed, I regret my actions and wish I had just stayed quiet.

Bloody well done you! And don't feel bad about any of it, I bet the bullying piece of crap isn't used to women giving as good as they get, he probably peed his pants.

As for the swearing, honestly so what? Hearing mum say a Bad Word isn't actually going to hurt her, and what she will remember is her mum standing up to a bully and taking no shit.

BurtsBeefCrisps · 08/02/2026 19:30

Glad you did! I wouldn’t regret it. At the height of perimenopause I once followed a man who called me a f&cking bitch as he passed my car (purely because I refused to reverse into a main road, as he was parallel to the lay-by for passing), boxed him in and said something very similar. Luckily he was small and weedy so it didn’t backfire. I felt pure red rage and have never regretted it as he was really shocked.

The sales assistant said I could go and swap the item so how did I cause the problem in the first place?

This has happened to me, but I finished scanning my shopping, paid then went back to change the item while the assistant kept an eye on my shopping for me.
Despite what the assistant said to do I would never expect anyone to be waiting on me for "only 2 minutes" at a check out.

Fortunately, you say, there wasn't any other children in ear shot, its fine if you want to bring your own up using bad language but that doesn't mean everyone wants to.

When I was loading my trolley shopping onto the conveyor belt two customers with baskets joined the queue and I let them go infront of me.

Just before the cashier started putting my items through another customer arrived with a basket.

After I'd paid and was packing my shopping the customer behind me said I was a 🤬 for making her wait and walked off. I normally don't rise to the bait but was so shocked I shouted back very loudly how many customers did she think should be served before me! Not my proudest moment.

Ha! We've all done it!

In Tesco one week, they had closed the tills for self scan and directed everyone to the baskets checkout. Waited in a huge queue then finally it was my turn. A young man behind me said "Do you mind if I go next, I've only got a few things." I said "Yeah, sure, I mean I've only waited here for 15 minutes but clearly you deserve to get served before me!" He went to move in front of me, not realising I was being grumpy and I didn't let him past!

ThatCyanCat · 08/02/2026 19:25

He then said, “I’ll see you here at 4pm next Sunday.”

Well I'll give him this, if you're going to be a big hard man trying to intimidate a woman with her young daughter, that's probably the most civilised way to do it. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it as "any time any place" or "you and me, outside, right now", but he's a knob, so "teatime at Aldi a week later" is probably the best he can do.

Good on you, you showed your dd to stand up for herself against arseholes. HE started it.

The OP precipitated the problem by leaving her stuff and wandering away for 'two minutes', I loathe people who do that. They were both wrong but to play the 'not in front of my child' card, having already used foul language, which I would bet the children have heard from her before, is the height of hypocrisy.

mumofbun · 08/02/2026 19:22

I had a similar experience and also felt awful afterwards. In my case we were in a busy coffee shop and I'd squeezed into a tiny gap because an old man was sitting with his seat far out from the table and I didn't want to disturb him...when the man went to leave he tried to push his seat further out and right into me. He then started swearing to himself but not at all quietly. I was with family including my children and I was so angry I stormed after him and confronted him. I then also confronted his wife who was still sitting at the table and clearly used to him being so awful.

Afterwards i cried and was shaking - it was the adrenaline and I think as a good person I felt bad for causing a scene. But he was awful and shouldn't be allowed to behave towards people like that! Try not to think about it anymore!

Just to add, I believe in Aldi everything scans full price and you have to get the staff to approve the discount anyway

StephensLass1977 · 08/02/2026 19:21

The "see you at 4pm next Sunday" sounds very much like a threat, in my opinion.

You did have the go-ahead from staff, and it wasn't your fault - you did believe your shopping to be finished. Yesterday I was buying some earrings, and when paying, the assistant said "you can get a second set for only a few pounds extra" so I left the queue to do so, with someone behind me, but I was only a few seconds, I ran, and the lady behind me didn't mind at all. He shouted at you first, and he was clearly either in a mood or just an angry person.

Well done for standing up for yourself, a really good example for your DD too so she knows not to take crap from controlling arseholes like that. If he is like this in the supermarket, i dread to think what he is like with a partner or kids at home

Yeah this. ^ At least you're not married to him @Liiz92 ! Be grateful for that! I hope he's not married. No woman deserves to be married to a thing like that!

Zov · 08/02/2026 19:18

What did he mean 'see you here next Sunday at 4pm?' Was that a threat?! Bastard! You did nothing wrong @Liiz92 He would never have spoken to a man like that.

And so you swore at him, so fucking what? Cunts like him only respond to cunty language. Well done!

Ignore the pearl-clutching Hyacinths who are saying you degraded yourself by swearing! You did not!

YABVU to go off mid scan and hold up the queue. I don’t blame him for being annoyed by that

But she needed the item and it was priced wrong. What's the alternative? Not being rude, just wondering what you think she should have done that wouldn't have resulted in this grumpy old git moaning about it.

A member of staff could have gone, she could have loaded her things back into the basket, asked for the transaction to be cancelled then gone and got the item. All of which takes time.

She thought running back to get it would be OK, surely we've all done it. Unless there was a massive queue and no other tills on, two minutes is hardly the end of the world in the grand scheme of things.

merrymonsters · 08/02/2026 16:56

You were taking up a machine while others were waiting. I can understand he'd find that annoying. It's all done by barcode so how does swapping for another of the same item help?

Boohoo someone has to wait 2 minutes more for a checkout, it’s no reason to abuse someone.

He was an arsehole, well done for telling him. I’d turn up next week with a scary looking man and see how smart he is then.

Putting an entitled wanker in his place - you should be bloody pleased with yourself. Well done!

Missingpop · 08/02/2026 19:12

🤣🤣🤣🤣 so funny go girl no flies on you 🤣🤣🤣🤣

TamarindCottage · 08/02/2026 19:11

Arrived at a check out at Aldi and saw items had been left on the shelf at the far end of the conveyor belt but there was no one in sight. I put my items on the conveyor belt which were scanned and put away by me. Man arrives and starts cursing, calling me a bumboclart (a Caribbean curse). I told him I was fully aware of what he called me, couldn’t care less and suggested he go fuck himself as nobody else would. The checkout assistant smirked, while continuing to scan my shopping. I grinned, paid and left. He definitely wasn’t expecting my response 🤣

PistachioTiramisu · 08/02/2026 19:09

He maybe was being rude, but your disgusting swearing at him (and in front of your child) was wrong. Curb your language in all situations, please.

Donutdonna · 08/02/2026 19:08

As likely to happen as a 31st of February

Helen1625 · 08/02/2026 19:02

He'd still have had to wait if the member of staff had gone to fetch the item instead of you. Would he have still kicked off? Probably. Not your fault that item was priced incorrectly. You apologised, he still had to carry on with his rant.

I don't blame you in the slightest for snapping at him. Some people think that they can do and say what they please without consequence. Perhaps he'll think twice about running his mouth off next time, the cantankerous old git!

I'm sure if you had let him get away with it, you'd be kicking yourself now.

Don't give it another thought. You reached you limit and you snapped at him. He embarrassed you by shouting at you in front of people and your child in a shop. You put him back in his box. Well done.

Rasperry · 08/02/2026 18:57

The only real reason not to swear is because if they’re unhinged enough to rudely confront a stranger and follow them around trying to fight, they may well land you a punch in response. There was the man who was killed in Sainsbury’s, the killer was sentenced a few months ago. Don’t think he even did anything or retaliated.

Other than that, talk of ‘you reduced yourself to his level’ is really silly. Oh no, the bystanders in the queue might… what? Take the man’s side? Because op said fuck? She wasn’t at work, and she didn’t ask to be dragged into the confrontation. She just wanted to get her shopping!

@philandgrant2 You’ve lived a sheltered life if you truly believe all people are socialised to be nice and kind.

You mean a normal life.

And also if you think men don’t use size and strength to intimidate others (especially women).

I suggest you turn off your TV. The things you see on TV don't reflect real life.

I almost never watch TV.

No I definitely mean sheltered.
Maybe watching the TV (the news would be a good place to start) wouldn’t be such a bad thing, might make you a bit more aware of what’s actually going on in the world.

canklesmctacotits · 08/02/2026 18:53

You telling him he’s picked the wrong person to be rude to = a threat, to his tiny little ego. His reply that he’d meet you at 4pm next Sunday was a challenge to you.

If you pitch up next Sunday at 4pm I GUARANTEE that if he turned up it would be with reinforcements 😂

The whole thing was unnecessary. He was having it out with the sales person, he said something to you, you quickly said sorry (which was right as you were holding up the line) - and that should have been the end of it. I’d have just let the sad sod rant to himself, because he wasn’t worth the time or effort you spent on him.
