Regret causing a scene in Aldi

I went to Aldi earlier. While I was scanning an item at the self checkout, the price was more expensive than the price on the sticker on the shelf. I asked the assistant if I could quickly go back to swap it. I was away for only about 2 minutes.

When I came back to the till, there was a man arguing with the assistant, saying she had to remove my items so he could use the till. I explained that the items were mine and that I had just gone back to swap something. He started shouting at me, saying I had “jumped the queue” and that I shouldn’t go to the till until I had finished my shopping.

I stayed quiet for a few moments. When he was in the queue, I approached him and pointed my finger, saying, “don’t fucking speak to me like that again, or at any woman.” He shouted at me in response, telling me not to point my finger or swear at him. I said, “You’ve chosen the wrong person to be rude to,” and went back to DD.

We finished paying at the same time, and he was walking close behind me, looking at me. I said, “I didn’t appreciate you shouting at me in front of my child.” He then said, “I’ll see you here at 4pm next Sunday.” I said I wasn't from the area so no chance and continued walking to my car.

As time has passed, I regret my actions and wish I had just stayed quiet.

Well he’ll think twice about talking to a woman like that again won’t he?!
Good for you op.

To explain further: I returned to the till, the man was there with the customer service lady. I immediately apologised. He looked right at me and shouted, “You shouldn’t go to the till until you’ve finished your shopping" and went on to say "You’ve jumped the queue!” He was standing very close and looking directly at my face. I felt upset and taken back because I was polite. Also, there were other tills he could have used or waited for, one till had a cashier with only one customer.

In that case he was very probably just trying to make a (stupid) point. Well done for standing up to him.

Don't regret that at all, OP, you stood up to a raging arsehole. Do you think he would have been arguing like that with 6'4 bodybuilder?

Comments like this always pop up on these threads, but I always find them very strange and don't understand what they're trying to say.

I'm not sure how height or hobbies are relevant. Yes, obviously he would have raged at a 6'4'' bodybuilder. Why would that have changed anything?

Can't believe you use foul language to a stranger. Were their kids around, I hope not? Get a grip of your potty mouth.

You don’t say how old your child is but regardless, swearing at a stranger is setting an awful example. A better lesson would have been to demonstrate charm in the face of provocation. It’s not exactly classy to use the F word in public. Your child will learn from you.

This

Rosealea · 08/02/2026 17:26

I can't believe you acted that way and swore at him in front of your daughter! What a poor example of how to behave you are.

MassiveWordSalad · 08/02/2026 17:26

I don’t think you should feel bad, even though you swore at him. You used the swear word for emphasis, it’s not like you called him a cunt. Maybe next time he’ll think twice.

You could have said “don’t speak to me like that”. But you you using fowl language and bemoaning how someone else speaks in front of your child is somewhat hypocritical and makes you look a bit stupid.

He sounds like an arse but so were you.

Yes, OP using 'fowl' language was chicken shit of her... 😅

PullTheBricksDown · 08/02/2026 17:24

Bet he'll think twice before having a go at a soft target, ie woman with a child, again though.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 08/02/2026 17:22

Well done , he will be avoiding you like the plague from now on 🤣

BringBackCatsEyes · 08/02/2026 17:22

I think you were both awful.

RottenBanana · 08/02/2026 17:22

He was rude. You were more rude.

TaraC25 · 08/02/2026 17:21

What / why do you regret it?

AngelinaFibres · 08/02/2026 17:21

Breadcat24 · 08/02/2026 16:54

Well swearing at him didn't cover you in glory "in front of your child" did it?
Why not just ask the staff member to deal with him

This. Your behaviour was appalling. Channelling your inner chav doesn't give you the moral ground. Next time let the staff deal with it.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 08/02/2026 17:21

Nah, good for you

MrsPinkSky · 08/02/2026 17:20

I thought this was going to be a reverse.

You made yourself look beyond foolish saying you didn't appreciate him talking to you like that in front of your child, yet you were happy to swear in front of her 🤦‍♀️

MassiveWordSalad · 08/02/2026 17:20

If you have a problem at the till these days, you have to go off and rectify it yourself because the supermarkets no longer employ enough staff for someone to get something for you - it happens all the time. Even if I’ve pointed something out to an employee, like something is leaking or bruised and I hadn’t noticed it previously, they have told me to go and get another one.

Womaninhouse17 · 08/02/2026 17:19

Aldi relies on moving people through the tills quickly so I understand why the staff member did that. He shouldn't have had a go at you but you definitely shouldn't have sworn at him in front of DD.

Growlybear83 · 08/02/2026 17:19

well you certainly set a good example to your daughter, swearing, pointing, and behaving every bit as badly as the man.

Coconutter24 · 08/02/2026 17:19

Yanbu to reply to him when he said you had jumped the queue. You probably didn’t do it in the best way though.
YABU to say ‘I didn’t appreciate you shouting at me in front of my child’ one because you’ve just shoved your finger in his face and swore yourself in front of your DD but secondly because the interaction was done and you were both leaving the shop and you brought it back up again instead of just leaving. He acted like a dick but so did you

Soontobe60 · 08/02/2026 17:19

Liiz92 · 08/02/2026 17:13

Thank you, everyone.
I really regret what happened, especially because my DD was with me, even though my back was to her so she didn’t see much except me speaking to the man.
It was an item that was reduced on the sticker but scanned at full price. Because staff were busy, I just wanted to swap it for something else quickly to save them from having to check it or get a manager to adjust the price.
I didn’t put my finger in his face.
I really wish I had behaved differently though and feel gutted about it. I’m not sure why he said he'd see me next Sunday at 4. My only thought is that maybe he was planning to do his shopping just before the store closes next week.

The staff member on the self serve tills is there for precisely this sort of issue. Did you actually ask them to amend the price?

Soontobe60 · 08/02/2026 17:17

Tonissister · 08/02/2026 17:10

Not her fault the item was wrongly priced. If she hadn't changed it, the assistant would have had to. Everyone has had to do a quick dash to change something at one point - bruised veg or leaking milk. It happens. People who get angry about it need to work on their priorities.

Which bit of my post said she was at fault for the price of the item? Or that I agreed with the man for being angry?

Walkden · 08/02/2026 17:17

"It was an item that was reduced on the sticker but scanned at full price"

If it was a 30% off sticker or similar due to being close to use by dates , whenever used the self scanner machines a staff member has had to enter the deduction manually.

gototogo · 08/02/2026 17:17

Whilst he acted very badly, it’s is incredibly annoying you left the till. In these circumstances you should have bought the remaining shopping and paid, then gone to fetch the other item.
