Why should Starmer resign? I don’t get it

I’m not a big fan, but I don’t understand why people believe he should go. Yes he appointed Mandelson as US ambassador when he knew about Epstein’s conviction and that Mandelson was still friends with him - which was wrong IMO.

BUT - people have known that was the case for over a year haven’t they? And Starmer got rid of him as ambassador as soon as he was first mentioned in the Epstein files last year.

Now all this extra stuff has come to light about Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein in the last few days and of course it is dreadful, but how is that Starmer’s fault? Aren’t these disclosures (due to the release of further documents from the Epstein files) as much news to him as they are to everyone else? I don’t think anyone knew the extent of Epstein’s depravity until recently apart from those involved - I don’t see how Starmer could have been expected to know.

Can someone with more understanding of the situation please enlighten me?

No, it’s just right wing media hype.
Most people don’t care that much about the Epstein revelations or Mandelson.

Sure. Why are you ok with what Epstein did?

Wibble128 · 05/02/2026 14:35

He appears untrustworthy to me because the following which I have learned from MSM and which do not speak of credibility to me:
Appointed Mandelson, apparently in spite of, or failing to include advice from the whips (who know most things about their MPs and their foibles) or a DV process etc.
Has allowed his cabinet to step away from their manifesto commitments
Died in the wool Fabian who is slowly limiting rights to free speech / voting etc etc
I am ot aware that his party has passed any laws to improve the protection of the realm and its people and our way and quality of life.
Has allegedly taken gifts from business people, clothing etc
Denying people local elections as the party is likely to be exposed to the fact the Country has turned aginst them.
Has Lord Hermer as Chancellor who appears to be undermining British Justice
Has David Lammy in any post, as deputy PM he could end up in charge, be afraid!!
Has Rachel from accounts in his cabinet, incompetent or what as Chancellor of exchequer? Has not replaced her and has policies ruining UK businesses.
Wants to return the Chagos Islands at a multi billion cost to the UK when we are apparently broke, just loading up the debt, while not understanding the global security implications.
Where are the three Ukranian / Romanian lads in the legal process, still on remand ???? Really not charged yet??? What is beng suppressed?
Failing to deal with illegal immigration, while stating he is.
Is cosying up to Europe instead of abiding by the Brexit vote.

Lacks charisma in public.

I am waiting the front door bell to ring in the small hours.

My understanding is that the relatively short Cabinet Office report to which you're referring essentially contained info that was already in the public domain, and that we have been aware of for quite a long time.

I was asking about your claim that "secret services" - presumably you mean either MI5 and/or MI6 - had briefed KS in detail about Mandelson, which implied that he knew much more than we previously thought he did.

But it seems that this was a bit of an exaggeration, and you're actually just claiming that KS was aware of information that was in the public domain, which we all agree on and has been known for quite some time.

I think you’re confusing me with the original poster!

Take a look at Mandys previous rap sheet and then make up your mind . Everyone knew about his dodgy dealings and theres probably much that we still dont know.
But Starmer claims "didnt know the extent of it" Like he "didnt know" about Jimmy Saviles
Crimes, despite being DPP at the time.
Pull the other one its got bells on it 🔔

Boris Johnson

No evidence for Boris Johnson's claim about Keir Starmer and Jimmy Savile

The PM's claim that Keir Starmer failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile is not backed up by any evidence.

Well, that’s the question isn’t it? Are they?

He only admitted yesterday (because he had to) that he knew about Mandelson’s continued friendship with the paedophile Epstein but appointed him as US ambassador anyway.

Now people are arguing about how much continued contact with a paedophile is acceptable in public office? Jesus.

There are a lot of unforced errors in this Government.

But I'd rather have a slightly ramshackle Labour Govt than an efficient Conservative Govt - because I don't like the Conservatives. Last time round they had their snouts in the trough, they are simply the political arm of the vested interests.

I'd rather have a Labour Govt prone to backing down than a Conservative Govt that doubles down; I'd rather have virtue signalling that performative cruelty.

Well, me too, but realistically, the Tories aren't even the most likely alternative these days. And much as I dislike them, I would take the shitty Tories over Reform any day.

I think its right that Andrew (formerly prince Andrew) and Peter Mandelson are geld to account but I'm intrigued how and why the other high profile names, also reported to be involved seem to have escaped the same scrutiny....?

I'm not sure. I'm hopeful it's because they all deserve this level of attention so we need to do them one by one.

Bertiebiscuit · 05/02/2026 14:26

Yes! He doesn't appear to care about women and children, especially those who are survivors of abuse. He pretends not to know what a woman is.

I 100% believe that this whole thing has been cooked up by Trump/Putin to destablise the country - hitting the prime minister and the King. Just release the right documents - and hide the rest - and BINGO.

We are being played.

He has to be best friends with Epstein though for there to be files. And take that money.

I absolutely believe that the documents have been released very selectively. That was always going to happen tbh.

Motomum23 · 05/02/2026 14:25

Sorry but a lot of people have known about the extent of Epsteins depravity for a very long time, including starmer. These people dont operate in a bubble. Time to throw out the whole ruling classes.

Anjo2011 · 05/02/2026 14:25

He should go because he’s supposedly the leader of the country in political terms. He’s made a colossal ‘error of judgement’. In any other workplace it would be gross misconduct and you’d be sent on your way. I cannot believe people are making excuses for him. Get him gone.

But you're right, where's Trumps heat?

I agree with you OP - the person who lied is Mandelson, not Starmer.

Having said that - of all the people that he could have appointed to be the UK Ambassadar to the USA he chose Mandelson and you really do have to ask why?

Because they knew the slimy and probably corrupt Mandelson was a great match for Trump. And whilst I hate Mandelson, he did get a trade deal, something which the previous goverment had been trying for years.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 05/02/2026 14:20

downtownlights · 05/02/2026 14:09

There was a two page Cabinet office report on the subject and also evidence from JP Morgan clearly highlighting the two men had a particularly close relationship but the PM chose to believe Mandelson’s denials and lies without further enquiry. I don’t know about the security services but the rest is in the public domain.

@Topseyt123 "Trump too is connected to the Epstein case. Why is his relationship with Epstein not more often examined in the media, alongside Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and Peter Mandelson?"

I expect Trump had the intelligence not to put anything in writing that could incriminate himself, ever.

I highly doubt that. And doubt Trumps intelligence. In fact, there's increasing evidence he's nuts.

He's said numerous things on record about his perversions and numerous worrying comments about his own daughters.

What's more likely or likely fact, is he has had his minions remove things.

You know, the same ones who said a few months ago that 'there are no Epstein files'.

Blippatea · 05/02/2026 14:19

He got less votes than Corbyn. And yet he is still in power. Says it all. People are well and truly pissed off. I don't think it would take much right now to tip people over the edge.

He needs to fucking listen and stop being so arrogant. He is an exceptionally unpopular man and that has been the case since before he got it.

BoxingHare · 05/02/2026 14:18

I agree that he's weak. I think his boring ploddiness was seen as an asset after years of disarray. But it's just causing more.

He is weak. He was trembling during a debate with Kemi in the HOL. It’s just not the right climate for a weak leader. I feel sorry for him. I don’t think he’s a bad person but this job is obviously too much for him in much the same way that Rachel Reeves is treating our economy like a school project. They are fucking with people lives and they need to be stopped.

I don’t feel sorry for him although I agree he was shaking. He’s too slippery on this. Today was bad.

MySweetGeorgina · 05/02/2026 14:16

Come on, Mandelson was always a big baddie, ever since the 90s, the worst kind of person just out for himself, yet Starmer bowed to his wishes and kept him in powerful position

that is just bad leadership.

It seems that the Tory outrage is sincere - it will always appear so, because they're not outraged over any of this at all.

They're outraged that they don't have their hands on the levers of power, they don't have their noses in the trough, they can't loot the public purse. What's more, the Hillsborough Law is about to go through in some form, landlords will be prevented from ripping off tenants, all these kinds of reforms that work against the vested interests. You don't really imagine said vested interests are just going to lie back and let this happen, do you?

The Tories can't credibly complain about the above, but they are outraged, so when Kemi Badenoch gets up in the Commons and professes to be outraged, well, it is sincere - but it's not about THAT.
