Why should Starmer resign? I don’t get it

I’m not a big fan, but I don’t understand why people believe he should go. Yes he appointed Mandelson as US ambassador when he knew about Epstein’s conviction and that Mandelson was still friends with him - which was wrong IMO.

BUT - people have known that was the case for over a year haven’t they? And Starmer got rid of him as ambassador as soon as he was first mentioned in the Epstein files last year.

Now all this extra stuff has come to light about Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein in the last few days and of course it is dreadful, but how is that Starmer’s fault? Aren’t these disclosures (due to the release of further documents from the Epstein files) as much news to him as they are to everyone else? I don’t think anyone knew the extent of Epstein’s depravity until recently apart from those involved - I don’t see how Starmer could have been expected to know.

Can someone with more understanding of the situation please enlighten me?

Are we really expected to believe Starmer knew nothing? He took his time in sacking him. As far as I’m concerned Starmer like most other politicians lack any moral fibre and aren’t interested in the good of the people, just themselves. Politically we’re buggered. At the very least it was very poor decision making, I’m going to bet he knew far more than he makes out and still appointed him.

MrsPenelopeBridgerton · 06/02/2026 12:41

Because he’s a shit Prime Minister who couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery.

HTH.

Don't be silly.

Bojo helped give us Brexit, he and the Tory party directly funded by pro kremlin Russians they make Lords and UK citizens to get around funding rules.

Starmer at worse, has shown colossal mis judgement but atm, there is zero evidence he knew of PM's betrayal.

Its hysteria.

Edited

Agreed. The tories claim to do what's best for the economy. They accidentally took us out of the single market for God's sake

FlyBy2026 · 06/02/2026 12:07

One thing I don’t understand 🤷

KS is saying PeterM lied to him and lied to the security services.

Surely MI5 and MI6 have more tools at their disposal than asking a person questions. KS is saying that PM said he wasn’t friends with the devil JE and didn’t stay at his house.

Is that what our security services do, take people’s word for it. Or do they in fact have staff who collect info on the web, have informants, listening ears, and can compile dossiers on people? They know their worts and all.

The general public knew PM was a sleazebag, surely our security services had much, much more on him.

They knew about his behaviour, but let it go for whatever reason, and it’s backfired on them and rightly so.

somewhereintheworld · 06/02/2026 11:02

I agree with the OP. Keir was lied to and because he's a decent man himself he believed the lies from Mandelson. Keir has had such bad press I feel very sorry for him.

@Vivienne1000people do downplay paedophiles even when it’s Starmer and Labour. Can’t have women minding about that. Bizarre.

We need to ask why people who enter politics end up becoming so wealthy often owning multiple properties and having second jobs. None of them are there to serve their country.

It's bordering on hysteria. Ffs

It doesn’t get much worse than a major ambassador taking money from a known paedophile whilst sending gov information.

Who would want the PM job, talk about a poisoned chalice. We desperately need stability, I think Ed Miliband is perhaps the only credible alternative that could potentially provide it.

Boggling at people saying Starmer should go for this when they want Farage as PM, that bastion of integrity and not a Russian asset AT ALL. Strange times.

Yes it is. At least there’ll be the Mandelson files coming out over the next few months or longer.

Another aspect of this is that ambassadors are often privy to far more sensitive and secret information than actual politicians. It's a role that has a lot of crossover with the espionage world; not a spy but he'd know who the spies with diplomatic cover were and maybe some of what they were up to. It's not a job you'd give to a total blabbermouth who do any kind of favour for someone rich. The mind boggles at the damage he could have done.

Yes Mandelson's time as ambassador needs to be investigated. I don't believe that he has behaved himself in Washington, he isn't capable.

Yes to this and @Vivienne1000post. The posts glossing over this because it’s Starmer are something else. Depressing to see.

Trying to do any inside dealing or giving away information which could alter the markets, to one of the most corrupt man on the planet, should land Mandelson in prison. Especially as we were in a recession and the finance industry was on its knees. He gave top secret information away.
Despite knowing Mandelson was cosy with Epstein, Starmer gave him one of the most prestigious Overseas Jobs. Let’s wait and see if the markets sunk lower because of Mandelsons criminal activity. Perhaps the most scandalous event since the Profumo affair.

It is the disconnect between the sold persona - Starmer the lawyerly grown up, good old honest boring Starmer with working class tools in his hands who went to state school

vs
Starmer the sleaze with the snazzy Lord Ali glasses and down with the Mandy dogs, and went to private school and has a 2 million pound house in North London anyway, with a big pension with history attached.

However, why anyone is surprised by the latter is beyond me. The former was just a persona sold to the public, gullible as always. The signs that he is the second were clear to me from the outset.

Maybe Starmer the Scheming Snake will be more attractive to the fickle British public anyway. Since when did clean fly anyway? Not to my recent recollection.

to me too. He had to be either a knave or a fool.

His appointment as UK Ambassador to the US turns out to have been in the pocket of a corrupt convicted paedophile and to have been spying on the government and acting against the interests of the British public. He appointed him despite being warned not to and despite being fully aware of the previous corruption affairs he had been embroiled in. Nobody could claim to be surprised that Peter Mandelson was at the heart of a terrible scandal.

Starmer has to be stupid or corrupt or completely without values. He can't not be at least one of those things.

Agree
if he’s stupid then he shouldn’t be PM
and if he’s corrupt he shouldn’t be PM

i think it’s a combination of both stupid and corrupt
can’t wait to see the back of him

Because its a question of judgement. Mandleson has always been dodgy has fuck. Why not simply appoint someone respectable as ambassador? Starmer is a clown.

Mandelson didn't get the nickname "Prince of Darkness" for nothing, and Starmer should have known better than to appoint him to such a sensitive role.
Starmer appointing Mandelson's protege, McSweeney, as his Chief of Staff was unwise, too.

It's not the first time Mandy has been in the shit. He had to resign from Blair's cabinet at least once, possibly twice: once over something to do with a loan (eta: I think he got a massive interest-free loan to buy a property from a businessman) and once over some business about an acquaintance and their passport (I think he tried to do someone a favour by getting their passport renewal fast tracked or something, but it was a long time ago and I can't recall the details).

Even if you disregard all the Epstein abuse stuff, and subsequent economy with the truth, Mandelson had done enough to warrant being fired imo. Sharing privileged info about economic matters to people who make money by investing is a bit like insider trading, but one step removed; no politician should be doing it, it gives the investor getting the info the opportunity to manipulate the markets for their own benefit.

People at, or close to, the heart of government should be squeaky clean and above reproach when it comes to this sort of stuff. He chose to ignore good practice and propriety and seems to think that rules don't apply to him, so good riddance I say.

Isn’t Starmer the most unpopular prime minister ever? Maybe I’m wrong about that, but he certainly generally disliked for many valid reasons that many people on Mumsnet seem to have no idea about, maybe do some reading around the subject if that’s you, but honestly, it would be good to have someone who wasn’t such a catastrophic shit show when we go into the next general election, unless everyone is happy for reform to just waltz in.
he removed a perfectly competent woman to give mandleson the role, despite Mandelson, having lost previous roles in disgrace and having pursued a relationship with Epstein post conviction which was known about. Starmer is a terrible politician without a moral compass, I guess that’s a good reason for him to fuck off finally?

Well, you've made up your mind!

Whilst he is v unpopular, all polling shows that, when the question is "Who would make the UK best PM?" he scores well, ahead of Farage, on par with Badenoch

(Polling done before this all hit the fan....)

Tryagain26 · 05/02/2026 19:38

I agree OP.
He was naive perhaps but not corrupt . He made a mistake and he has owned that. Something others have refused to do previously
I hope he survives
