Why are people so determined for me to pull out in front of them?

I was driving today and it's a usual road. It reaches a road where visability is low and there is a bride. I always stop and have a good look before putting out. There are traffic lights in the distance and a in front of a hatched "keep clear" sign.

On the opposite side of the road lots of cars will stop and let me out - even when the road is empty..

I just don't get it.

Why.

I just don't know why someone would see a car and stop.

I do. I'm usually eye rolling and calling them a thick idiot from my car and watching them get more and more annoyed before they drive off.

There are junctions near me where this would mean you sitting there for an hour if you adopted this stance at rush hour. There is no gap unless someone lets you out.

Have you never found yourself in this position?

  1. My reading comprehension and spatial visualisation are pretty good, but I also cannot follow what is going on in the OP.
  2. I agree that one needs to take care when polite drivers offer to let you turn in front of them - you still need to assess whether there are other risks that prevent you from safely executing your manoeuvre. If you don't want to take that risk, you don't need to accept the polite driver's offer. They'll soon get the message if you just hold tight and don't move.
  3. In many places (I live in one), the traffic is sufficiently heavy that without polite drivers there would be regular gridlock. For example, turning right into a side-street with an endless stream of cars (all doing 20) coming the other way ... it's so nice when someone slows and flashes to give you the chance to get around and let the traffic on your side flow again.
  4. As such, while I get the purity of the Highway Code / driving instructor rules about no flashing, no waving at other drivers, no sticking your finger up to acknowledge them, etc, I'm glad to live in an area where this sort of cooperation is commonplace.
  5. I've also started FLASHING MY HAZARD LIGHTS to say thank you. I love that, it's one of the few things that makes this country great. I suppose this is not an issue for the OP, given presumably he or she isn't polite to anyone on the road and hence doesn't get illegally thanked.
  6. YABU to the OP for being so cranky.
Edited

All very good points and I also do the hazard lights thing.

There's a problem if the car that's slowed/stopped is obscuring the view of another lane (in which case I just wave them along) or if the driver behind it is an idiot who tries to overtake it (I've seen this happen!).

In short, letting people out adds new considerations/hazards to the situation.

However it's still potentially useful to maintain traffic flow, and my little town would be at permanent gridlock if nobody ever did it.

Which is why I wonder what the road layout is where @smelliecat encounters it.

You shouldn’t be stopping to have a good look at the ‘bride’ 😁

The bride shouldn't be standing where visibility is low then, should she? I bet she's one of those entitled ones who had an abroad hen and a child free wedding. I give it 12 months. Tops.

IngridBurger · 05/02/2026 16:20

I think different things are getting conflated.

Yes, it is very kind, polite and helpful for drivers to let others out of side roads or to change lanes in heavy congestion/slow traffic. I don't think that's what OP is describing though. If the traffic is moving freely it just creates confusion for someone to stop and effectively try to change who has right of way.

Ok but lots of other people do.

Not everything has to make sense to you

Have you actually read all the posts where people are asking you to clarify? Nobody understands what you mean by bride.

Mumsnet has always been pretty rude. I used to be on here a lot when mine were tiny (13 years ago) and it was very robust.

Yeah old school robust I can deal with. I've been here since it was all fields. Its just quite nasty of late but the world is too so I guess what do I expect?

Can someone please just clarify wtf a ‘bride’ is? I thought it was some kind of countryside term but OP lives in a city? I’m so confused 😂👰🏻‍♀️

Apparently it’s not a bridge so maybe the OP really does mean bride and that’s why she stops to look?

I shall remain silent on why she feels the need to put out. TMI really OP.

Btrsun10 · 05/02/2026 10:28

I agree OP.
My daughter's driving instructor drilled it in to her to ignore people being "polite". It causes accidents and often forces the driver to rely on the polite persons cues. The driver can feel under pressure as they don't want to seem rude.
As others have said, if you pull out into someone else's path and there is an accident, you will be liable.
Why cant people just follow the rules of the road?

That’s all well and good for an inexperienced learner who needs to pass their test, but you’ll never get anywhere if you refuse every time someone lets you out..

If another car comes to a dead stop and let’s you out, there is just no way that that it’s dangerous unless you’re not a competent/confident driver.

Even flashing, although not Highway Code Approved, is a clear indication that a driver is expecting and allowing you to cross their path. Just drive with caution.

fromthegecko · 05/02/2026 11:21

I always just impatiently wave them on their way, for the many reasons mentioned by PPs.

But the fact that it happens frequently suggests there might be something about this particular road layout that prompts it. Any chance of a diagram?

Oh this is a fun guessing game of what the fuck OP is actually talking about!

Visibility is low and there is a “bride” - but not an actual bride, nor a bridge. Hmm. Is it a bridleway? Probably not if you live in a city. Anyone else able to decode this?

Quite

I assumed it was a narrow bridge (with the low visibility) and people were letting her across first rather than two people trying to squeeze past

But she's disagreed with that

And won't bother to explain

Why does this get to you?

Do you think they’re trying to piss you off?

OP your first post is almost impossible to understand because of all the typos. And your stroppy further posts tell a story of their own.

YABU.

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 05/02/2026 08:45

On a serious note, being annoyed that other people don’t go about their way in a completely perfect way, a way that’s pleasing to everyone around, never doing one thing wrong, is really is something that only exists in MNland. IRL nobody gets so clenched about somebody <gasp> letting them out of a street.

I do. I'm usually eye rolling and calling them a thick idiot from my car and watching them get more and more annoyed before they drive off.

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 05/02/2026 09:10

Fulmine · 05/02/2026 09:08

How are you risking road safety if there is only one car around and it has stopped to let you out?

Yes exactly.

OP herself is grumbling about it being en empty road, so where the risk?

Also - you don’t HAVE to do as they say OP. You’re entitled to take your own time.

Fulmine · 05/02/2026 09:08

smelliecat · 04/02/2026 23:16

Correct. Why should I risk road safety by pulling out in front or them? On an empty road

I wasn’t just referring to you BTW OP it everyone who is rather amusingly annoyed by other people’s courtesy

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 05/02/2026 08:58

smelliecat · 05/02/2026 08:56

Mate, who is saying I'm wound up. Only you are wound up

Yeh sure starting a thread on MN and saying just don't get it. Why. I just don't know why someone would see a car and stop.

sounds like someone totally fine with the situation 🤣

But seeing as you asked: they’re decent people. They’re trying to do you a favour, probably knowing how annoying it is to be waiting to be able to come out a road. They’re not doing it to upset you or piss you off. Nothing sinister. Just decency (yes some people have decency)

smelliecat · 05/02/2026 08:56

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 05/02/2026 08:48

No really, I don’t know a single person IRL who gets so easily wound up. If anyone moaned about this IRL I’d think “WTF”. But people come on MN to complain about people letting them out, not looking where they were going when walking for 0.2 seconds, not holding the door open, brushing their arm because they were close etc. Surely these intersections of other people are a part of living as a human in public and we just have to put up with it and accept we all dot hi ba to piss people off
