Sharing bath water

Just that really.
For what it is worth we have a massive roll top bath which takes 15 minutes to fill
I usually offer out to rest of family when I am done.
is that okay or grim?

It’s not about it germs as such as in the feeling of being clean.

I wash to get clean so firstly for me I shower not bathe as showering washes away dirt while bathing sits in the dirt.

So to say hop in the bath after my dh would be adding his dirt to mine. Definitely not getting clean.

If I showered after it defeats the point of saving the water as a point at all, as I should just shower to start with and save the time and water.

If you bathe for pleasure then again the idea of sitting in someone else’s used water definitely does not appeal.

Gross.

Magsbd · 05/02/2026 19:05

Disgusting. 🤮

There are hygienic ways to do it though. Sharing much water is done out of upbringing and habit, nothing else.

In Africa (at least where I'm from) where water is actually scarce and many people don’t have running showers, you prepare a bucket of warm water and pour it over you. It is actually highly efficient. People don’t share bathwater

But this is MN, so it’s probably seen as a marker of being middle class (and so superior) to share used bathwater. See also shoes on inside; dogs licking plates and bathing infrequently.

Yes I know what you mean

i prefer to shower in mornings but will get in bath after dh in evening

teejaytee · 05/02/2026 19:01

Absolutely. Anyone around with a social conscience in drought years - like, I think, '76 - had to drop their squeamishness and egocentricity and think of the social necessity of using far less water, which (back in those pre-privatisation days) everyone paid for equally. Using far less included sharing it. With a life-threatening climate crisis upon us, we've got no choice if we want this blue planet to survive but to use far less of its non-renewable resources. So yes bath(water)-sharing has to be normalised again - just like we have with reusing plastic bags, composting food waste, driving only when essential, etc, in the name of sustainability. Our kids know this only too well - and won't forgive us if we leave them yet more of an environmental nightmare to resolve, even as the climate clock ticks louder.

Thing is we all need to think about saving water despite all the rain

When my DS were young we shared water. I think up until my youngest DS was maybe 12 he was happy to get in water I had been in. Dc now adults and moved out.
I regularly share bath water with my DH now…… don’t see anything wrong with it….. we are often intimate after a bath so body fluids are shared anyhow……also our house hold bills are massive so not paying out even more for 2 baths

IDontLikeSnowAndIce · 05/02/2026 08:43

I will go in the bath after my husband. He has the water hotter than me so is still nice when i get in.
Tmi but We share bodily fluids already so i dont see it as being odd. I wouldn't share water with anyone else ....

Yes likewise

Sadcafe · 05/02/2026 18:41

Doesn’t bother me using water after DW, as long as she hasn’t washed her hair in it, but she won’t use mine

NeedSomeHeadspace · 05/02/2026 18:39

I think it’s grim - my mum made me and my sister share the bath when we were very young. My sis stood up and once did a poo (age 3) when I was sat in the bath with her (age 5), and mum put loo roll on her hand and scooped it out. And then we washed in that water!!! That must’ve been the trigger for me to think never share your bath water!

Donury236 · 05/02/2026 18:01

Yes, but me and the OH will.be in it at the same time 😜

I'm happy to share a bath. Fun times.

But not to take on a tepid one that needs partially emptying and refilling to get back to temperature.

And where I pick up responsibility for post bath cleaning

The idea that baths aren't hygienic has become widespread and I think it's really silly. If you don't have a manual job where you get dirty, and you have a bath or shower most days, you cannot possibly be dirty enough for you to be sitting in your own dirt. Baths are also very good for your circulation and any aches and pains, not to mention relaxation. There's a reason the Romans had their thermal baths! And why many Eastern/Central European countries have bathing traditions.

We have lost sight of the health benefits of hydrotherapy, which I think is a pity.

I am fine with a bath but I wouldn’t be sharing the water with anyone, whether it’s theirs or mine.
Generally if you suffer from a uti then baths are not advisable however as you say, baths are good for aches and pains. I lead such a busy life that this is generally the only reason I will have a bath.

Dutchhouse14 · 05/02/2026 09:17

Well i grew up sharing bath water.
And as an adult with my own when we had a hot water tank we also shared bath water as it took ages to get more wnough hot water to fill a bath the second time. Now we have a combi boiler so instant hot water so bliss!
But no i think sharing bath water between close family is fine as long as youre not really filthy or use body scrub!!

idontgetitdoyou · 05/02/2026 09:12

🤮
Totally grim. I would never get into a bath after my DH, bits of hair and skin etc. and he's clean and hygienic. Also, surely it would only be lukewarm.
We have shared baths in the past pre kids but that's different!

The only way this is acceptable is young children being bathed together, which I obviously did when my twins were little.

Everyone in our house showers.

Sharing a catheter? ConfusedThats a whole other topic. Ive never had to use one but I wouldnt be sharing that!

Oh dear 🤣🤣🤣

I am going blind so I am trying out dictation.

I guess the way I say bath water and catheter are too similar 🤣

This might get me into trouble going forward.

loislovesstewie · 05/02/2026 08:55

Everyone sweats. If you don't use a bidet after using the loo then you will have some residue of faecal matter on you. Having had to share bath water as a child, one of the best things about being an adult in my own home is that I don't share baths. As I said I've only showered for the last 15 years, I can't imagine wanting to sit in another person's filth.

No way, sorry, just no … we rarely take baths here, shower every day, much more hygienic.

Chickadiddy · 05/02/2026 08:40

It's beyond grim.

And not exactly environmentally friendly either as it's a huge amount of water and then second person in needs a shower afterwards too.

If they want to actually be clean.

Wishthingswerenouting · 05/02/2026 08:40

Minjou · 04/02/2026 23:04

How dirty are you and your family?

What a silly comment. Not dirty enough that we bathe in each others swill.

bumphousebump · 05/02/2026 08:38

DH will pop in after me, I don’t like his bath water as full of black hairs. The Japanese and other places do it properly and clean really thoroughly before getting in the bath and then everyone shares.

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 05/02/2026 08:33

Fine for family imo. So long as you’re not a miner or sewage worker or something 😂

Fizbosshoes · 05/02/2026 08:33

mypantsareonfire · 05/02/2026 07:25

Yup. I haven’t had a bath since childhood for those reasons.

Sharing catheter would send me over the edge 🤣
