AIBU to have serious concerns about a Julia Donaldson book?

Specifically, Fox’s Socks.

The fuck is going on with this guy? He’s woken up at 10am, his clothes are all over the place—his hat is underneath the bathmat, and one of his socks on the head of a frankly disturbing Mr. Punch character in the attic… how much did Fox have to drink the previous night?!

Or, as I’m coming to wonder, how involved is the mouse in all this? She’s so unreadable: at first I thought she was just smug, passive-aggressively following him around and not helping to find any of these clothes in bizarre places.

But does she, in fact, have MH issues, possibly even dementia? She pauses halfway through to make a hat out of a rose, for god’s sake. Is Fox a carer for Mouse? Did he sleep through his alarm from sheer stress and exhaustion, to find she had woken up and distributed his belongings throughout the house? Or is this an abusive relationship and she’s gaslighting him into thinking he’s losing his mind?

AIBU to be very worried that this is not an example of healthy dynamics, regardless of character motivations, and damaging to my toddler’s perception of the world? Should I ban the book? Or is there a more nuanced and wholesome interpretation of the work that I’m missing? Any advice welcome.

I absolutely loathe Fox’s Socks. It’s such a disappointment, particularly when compared with Rabbit’s Nap.

You’re singing to the choir here.

I also detest the Scarecrow’s Wedding! Why introduce a three year old to the concept of a cad?! Why is someone smoking in a children’s book?

Not read this one (I'm a few years out of the Julia Donaldson world) but from this thread it sounds like it's just a counterfeit Dr Seuss Fox in Socks.

Fox in socks this game is done sir, thank you for a lot of fun sir!

Nooo they are gorgeous books!! I often use this call and response with my son: in the cupboard up high - he finds his bow tie. And I’m sure the depths of symbolic interpretation are immense :-)

Scarecrows' Wedding. Groom-to-be scarecrow sent off to find a few basic items for wedding and takes so long that farmer makes new pervy-looking replacement who sidles on up to bride-to- be, making disparaging remarks about her hair and setting light to her with cigar and leaving her to burn to death. Being a kid's book, forensic pathologists are not necessary but, if I were bride to be, I would have binned off dopey as well and created my own true-crime podcast as fair warning to all straw-haired maidens.

The most unbelievable part though is that the BBC thought this was a suitable JD book to televise...

It really bothers me that Harry doesn't just ask the snail for directions to the pail. Why he has to follow him for days is beyond me.

On a separate note, Frog's Day Out has a picture where he is bouncing in his seat and the other animals are clearly embarrassed to be with him.

SeaDragon17 · 05/02/2026 21:15

Can I throw the classic The Tiger Who Cane to Tea into the mix?

I always felt it was perfectly obvious that mummy had clearly helped herself to some Mother’s Little Helpers and hadn’t done the weekly shop so had to make up a whole load of hooey about a tiger eating everything in the house to gaslight poor, hardworking daddy into taking her and the unfortunate neglected child out for sausage.

BeGoldLemur · 05/02/2026 21:12

They are very funny books. Rabbits nap is crazy shit too.

I wonder if that's the same mole who keeps being pooed on by different animals.

Pooed on?! 💩

I have to say I don't remember that particular plot twist!

Of course, I haven't read all of Julia's output, she's like a children's-book-writing machine, I swear I see a new one almost every month in the library. Not sure I'll pick up the one about the mole getting pooed on though, don't want to give out any ideas when potty training...

BeGoldLemur · 05/02/2026 21:11

I used to read it to my son and I’d say “Open the F’ing box! Open the box!’ And he would giggle uncontrollably 🥰 ah happy days reading about a toxic household with animal instincts!

Rednotdead · 05/02/2026 21:11

I don’t have children, but I’ll be searching for these books in the children’s section of my local library, I must read them all!

Brilliant thread and just what I needed thanks @BabyNameHelpPls 😂

Yup:

Yesterday upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there.
He wasn’t there again today,
Oh how I wish he’d go away.

That’s annoyed me for over sixty years. 😃

Unless you live in a haunted house, our resident ghost is at the bottom of our stairs...

I don't mind any of those things, let the Fox live his life how he sees fit, I'm sure he'll grow out of this drug binges/inappropriate relationships with prey animals but I do have a massive problem with trying to rhyme "giraffe" and "scarf" in the Smartest Giant.

Edited

Amen. See also Stick Man. Rhyming 'scarf' with 'laugh'. Not for those of us with strong NW accents!

Nomination for this thread to be moved to classics. I nearly spat out my tea, and my kids are teenagers now!

Actually linguistically its perfectly correct. Stair should always be used in the singular and/or literary state. Plural if talking about multiple stairs or a set(s) of stairs.

'He bumped into her on the stair.' Or, 'while standing on the stair.'

vs

'She ran up the stairs.' 'She stood and looked up despairingly at dozens of stairs before her.'

I adore Julia Donaldson books! My son’s fave is room on the broom. My only issue with that is kids being introduced to witches and they’re always ugly! Why are they always ugly? And why is society obsessed with introducing witches and wizards to kids. At least she’s a kind witch giving all the animals a lift! My fave is the kindest giant in town. He really is a good man 😂 but I think she’s an incredible kids author.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 03/02/2026 23:28

Isn’t there another one in this series where a mole has lost his spectacles and finds them in a teapot in the end? Equally bizarre. And all the other animals just react like “oh, it’s always in the last place you look!”

I wonder if that's the same mole who keeps being pooed on by different animals.

If you do large amounts if acid, you too could be a children's book writer OP.

I'm several children into Julia Donaldson books and generally love them.

However, the Snail and the Whale near done for me.

That was the book that alerted me to just how literal and over-thinking my DS2 is.

I ended up googling the swimming ability of snails, how long they could breathe under water for, could they stay stuck on in water only to culminate in DS announcing that he just didn't think the snail could go over sand like it did. That was the unbelievable bit for him.

Although all JD is better than frigging In The Night Garden.

I used to feel quite tearful at the end: “And they sang to the sea as they all set sail on the tail of the great blue humpback whale”. They all seemed so brave and adventurous. Hormones have a lot to answer for. My dc are adults now but I still remember it.

Midnights68 · 05/02/2026 20:14

Fox is a simpleton, but he’s also clearly employing weaponised incompetence. He’s hid or otherwise misplaced all his crap then whinges at a woman to find it for him.

zaffa · 05/02/2026 20:11

I’m a little worried that neither me nor my six year old have ever actually questioned why Fox’s belongings were thusly distributed around the house now 🤣🤣🤣

Guerlainade · 05/02/2026 20:06

Sounds like a typical day in my family 😂

TootToot2020 · 05/02/2026 20:01

In one of them fox is in the shed and it looks like he’s got an axe in the back!

I’ve not had the chance to read the full thread so someone may have already said this, but in Scotland a ‘stair’ or the ‘stair’ is the communal stairs in flats, so it makes sense here.

carnivalqueenthethird · 05/02/2026 19:34

This is honestly the best thread I have come across in a very long time. I am in tears. We have the whole set of these books and I’m never going to be able to read them again without thinking about this 😂

carnivalqueenthethird · 05/02/2026 19:30

I literally read this book 30 minutes ago. I have to say none of your thoughts ever entered my mind, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to read it again without crying of laughter 😂😂😂😂. You are so right, I have no idea why I hadn’t thought of any of it before 😂😂😂😂
