To think I should go to minor injuries?

DH says probably nothing! I am a bit concerned myself.
These are my symptoms:
Random prodding pain in upper back
On Sunday evening, I was driving and I suddenly felt a pulsating, deep pain in the side of my lower back. This came in waves varying from uncomfortable to a sudden shock of pain which would make me groan out loud, for around 5 hours until I went to sleep. Since then, it has happened twice but only for around 15minutes at a time.
I have also been having stomach pain, almost like a burning feeling on and off.
I have felt nauseous on and off yesterday and especially today

Should I go, or will they tell me to bugger off and stop wasting their time?!

Can't rule out kidney stones without a scan op so still could be kidney stones, but also could be trapped wind - that can be agonising. You need to ask for an urgent appointment with the GP, though if you get a bad attack of pain again go to a&e while it's bad.

Zanatdy · 04/02/2026 03:40

So many people telling Op to go to A&E for more tests. This is what her GP can do now the episode has resolved. A&E isn’t there to start tests and investigations, yes if someone attends in severe pain they may do a scan, but when an episode has resolved the right step is to ask GP for an urgent appointment and they will refer as appropriate. When I went in with acute pancreatitis once, I was shocked at the things people showed up at A&E for. I am guilty of not going when I should sometimes (and been told off for it by consultants) but people do need to use the most appropriate health care route. If you show up at A&E and say I was in a lot of pain but it’s resolved now but i’m worried what it could be, they are going to tell you to see your GP (after waiting hours).

Zanatdy · 04/02/2026 03:27

I’d make an appointment with the GP and discuss what happened and they can make any referrals. When my gallstones first kicked off, I had an episode of excruciating pain for 5-6hrs. By the time I made it to out of hrs (it was a Sunday) it had eased off and they said maybe I had an ulcer (i was found to have lots of healed ulcers during my first endoscopy). It didn’t happen again for 5 months.

I never went to A&E, as I was in too much pain to drive there and at the time had no-one to take me or care for my then young DC overnight. But GP referred me for an ultrasound which showed I had multiple stones. I had my gallbladder out 5mths later, but then unfortunately that was just the start of my health issues as a stone had damaged my pancreatic duct which led to a pancreas disease and a major surgery.

I don’t think you need to do anything urgent now like A&E as it’s eased off, but make an appointment with the GP to talk it through. Could be a back pain issue, hard to tell from one episode but sounds similar to gallstone attack symptoms, and the timeline matches, of several hours then eases.

TheFunDog · 04/02/2026 02:42

I... you're obviously worried about something happening and you don't know what it is.... Gp, 111 then go to A&E if not feeling any better or still worried.
No need to ask strangers... this is your life, you need to know.

And let us know.
Take care

DoritoBear · 04/02/2026 02:15

I haven’t read the whole thread, so I don’t know if anyone else has suggested, but it could well be gallstones.

My gallstone pain was a bit like contractions, and it often coincided with trapped wind which caused shoulder pain. My pain was always worse in the evenings and subsided when I went to sleep. Until it didn’t, then the pain used to cause me to vomit.

My dr was brilliant. She said it didn’t sound like typical gallstone pain, but she sent me for an ultrasound to rule it out but that’s exactly what it was.

LunaTheCat · 04/02/2026 01:24

You are really in pain .. you should ask medical attention. Could be many , many things.. go and seek help.

Forenspy · 03/02/2026 20:05

I assume so, but I am still concerned about the pain anyway! Perhaps even more so now. I was almost certain it was kidney stones or a kidney infection. What else could it be?

Ulcer?

Yes, an urgent treatment centre! Sorry. Just wanted to make it clear that I’m not suggesting I go to A&E!

If it’s a kidney infection or stones, you need a&e. It’s not a minor injury or GP situation. You need scans and blood tests which can only be done at hospital. I got sepsis waiting for my GP to try various oral antibiotics.

seriouslynonames · 03/02/2026 23:10

Negative dip on urine sample doesn't rule out UTI. My last 2 have been negative on dip at GP but samples sent off and both times I needed a week of antibiotics (amoxicillin not the usual nitrofurantoin etc).

Definitely get yourself checked out, I hope you get sorted soon

Bedtimeread · 03/02/2026 22:59

You can get shoulder pain with an ectopic pregnancy, which can also come up neg on a test. I noticed you said you were TTC. I think it would be best to go to A&E and rule out anything more sinister, our urgent treatment centres are run by GP’s which is not great for things like this. Hope you are ok x

Can I ask what I have done to offend you?

You posted a thread, OP. Some posters just live for making somebody else’s life unnecessarily miserable. Best ignored…

Minor injuries is not appropriate. The clue is in the name...minor injuries. I once got told off for going there with an agonising and painful swollen arthritic knee. There was nothing they could do for me.
You should call your GP surgery or get advise from 111.

I think you should RTFT

Chatterbox74 · 03/02/2026 22:26

I had pain like this to the point i thought i was even having a heart attack- turned out to be gall stones..

Periperi2025 · 03/02/2026 22:25

GP tomorrow morning.
If you are out walking the dog it is not an out of hours emergency.

No one on here is going to be able to tell you what's going on, OP. With the symptoms you describe it could be anything from trapped wind to a heart attack. I think you should go to A&E and get checked out properly.

Rational response. 👏

How long can trapped wind last for? And would it cause the severe pain I had on Sunday in my flank area? It was on the back of my love handles Blush

Well over a week for me. It was a similar sort of pain to what you are describing.

isthisevenreallife · 03/02/2026 22:10

I had horrible stomach and back pain, that also went up into my shoulder blade, when I had Gallstones.

HollaHolla · 03/02/2026 22:10

From experience, when I've had kidney stones, I knew ALL about it. Like, cold sweat, vomiting, not able to tell you what my own name is, etc. I understand there's similar symptoms with gallstones.

Did they check with you that it wasn't back pain in itself? For example, can you make it feel a bit better by moving certain ways, etc.? Does it feel a bit like sciatica? If so, it could be a bit of disc touching a nerve (bulging/herniated - used to be called slipped - disc.) You can get a fair bit of referred pain from that. But, it wouldn't really move about your back from upper to lower, etc.

I'd say to persevere with 111, and to push if it's genuinely intolerable; and if you can't get on top of it, is there somewhere you can go (I know different areas have different facilities), where they might at least be able to assess whether it's muscular, for example - and you could get onto a physio for some relief.

Best of luck in getting to the bottom of it. Chronic, constant pain is miserable.

I’m a Registered Nurse - get yourself to an A & E department asap. Please do not delay this may be something serious or it may not. But you can’t take chances.

I’ve seen that these are common with endometriosis, which I have been looking into due to struggles with conceiving and other factors

That's certainly possible. Whenever I had anything endometriosis related flaring up I'd feel it under my shoulder blade too. A cyst is easy enough to diagnose but endometriosis is trickier.

You've mentioned anxiety a few times, you're almost gaslighting yourself and it's sad to read. I always tell my daughters to replace the word "anxiety" with "pain" when talking to medical professionals.
There is a well documented medical bias against women, and mentioning any psychological or emotional issue almost guarantees you won't be taken seriously.

Anxiety can be a physical response within your body to pain, infection, inflammation, other bodily disturbances.

Your symptoms sound like the pain I had with my gallbladder which I eventually had removed.

Well said

Gaslighting myself in which way?
